1/15 In A Farewell to Arms, Ernest Hemingway presents a love story that takes place on the Italian front during World War I. The love story is situated in the most unlikely of places, in the middle of a violent war. Frederic Henry was an American who was assigned to drive an ambulance for the Italian army. Henry was not fighting in the war; therefore, he believed that he was fairly safe. Catherine Barkley, an English nurse, was stationed at a British hospital in Gorizia. The hospital was not far from the villa Henry and other officers were assigned too. Eventually the pair met each other at this very hospital, and their love affair sparked. Lieutenant Henry had never loved someone in the way that Miss Barkley had. The war had already had detrimental impacts on her personal life. Miss Barkley had previously been engaged; however, her lover was killed in combat. After Henry was wounded by a trench mortar, he began to realize that he had a special connection for Catherine. His injuries had him transferred to another hospital in Milan, and Catherine was also sent there soon after. During their time in the hospital is when their affair grew more serious. They both believed that they truly loved each other, even considering themselves a married couple; however, Henry had to be sent back to the front. Now that Henry has fallen in love, he could not get Catherine off of his mind. He eventually realizes how out of hand the whole war is when the Italian police begin executing officers during the retreat. As an officer, he knew that his only hope would be to leave the army immediately. Henry feels as though he loves Catherin too much to die and leave her by herself. Although he wants to see the war come to an end, it is too risky for him to play a part in ending
