Fashion School Application Essay

After I graduated from high school, I still didn’t know where and what I wanted to do, but I always knew that I wanted to be in the fashion industry. My sister, who is graduated from The New School Parsons with a degree of fashion design, helped to lead me and trace a path for me. That’s how I decided to come to New York and started my adventure. The first year I had a foreign language study as known as American Language Program at Columbia University. After I completed my studies for a year, I applied to Berkeley college for the fashion merchandising and management major, after I got accepted, I started my studies in 2012 and continue my education in Berkeley College currently.

One person that inspires me in fashion is Anna Wintour. Sure, it’s completely cliché of me to look up to her versus everyone else who adores her. However, my admiration for her is so intense. Her poise and demeanor is so incredible. She’s the complete master of her craft and she holds class while doing it. Growing up I’ve always wanted to be in the rim of fashion. Weather it was designing or just being the boss in the world of fashion. Moreover, as I got older my passion grew more so in magazines and I loved to read and write. My friends would always say they loved my style and where to get this piece from. I’d always been such a modest person when it comes down to people complementing me on my style. Wayne Dyer once said “doing what you love is the cornerstone of having abundance in your life”. Ever since I was a little girl, fashion has always been a very important part of my life. However, while most young girls were busy designing Barbie’s next outfit, I was enthusiastically trying to figure out the best way to market and sell Barbie to my friends. This habit did not end during my childhood years; rather it followed me through high school. I firmly believe that being passionate about your career can add much happiness and depth to your life. By attending FIT I can bring and take away positive ideas and qualities.

Fashion has been a prominent aspect of a woman’s life throughout time. Women of different times and cultures have turned the routine of picking out clothes and putting together different ensembles into a sort of art, or a way to express and promote themselves. Many women also see fashion as part of their identity, or a way to manipulate the way people see them. What a woman wears can drastically change the way society views her - it can increase her chances of getting a job, or make her gain respect (or rejection) from her peers (Sika n.p.).

My love affair with fashion started years ago, but over these past 2 years it has grown into something so beautiful. Fashion made it’s grand entrance in my life when I was looking over a Chanel catalog along with a few other designers. For example; Vera Wang, Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, Marc Jacobs, Phoebe Philo, and many more. The designs caught my eye and I was just mesmerized by it all. It literally took my breath away! I always told myself and my family that I will grow to be an amazing fashion designer and sell beautiful, elegant clothing known to man. A worldwide known designer.

Fashion is everything to society and the media. The fashion industry has transformed into a necessity in the life of people. Everyone wants to look good, feel fabulous and feel as if we belong with everyone else. The envy and desire to wear certain things and look a certain way all come, from wearing the latest fashion handbags, accessories, dresses, shoes, and the list goes on. But, when is considering fashion into an individual’s life going too far to the extreme? Many do not consider the whereabouts of fashion materials and how the environment is affected by the mere existence of certain garments. Some may believe these objects grow on trees. I believe that the Fashion Institute of Technology is a school that can change my life and career. I truly believe that I am the perfect candidate for FIT because I am committed and passionate about my academics and future goals. Putting aside a completely different major from fashion and learning something new can be challenging, however, I am very desperate and motivated to take on that task. I have confidence in myself, that I am in a perfect position where I will be able to adapt to any learning environment. Furthermore, I want to study graphic design in depth and be able to communicate through my artwork. I believe that FIT is the perfect school that can provide me the perfect path to the life where I can make a living doing what I truly love and enjoy doing.

Approximately 64% of the United States public education system requires a strict dress code. How does the dress code affect the students and how does it benefit them? Do the students have a say in this dress code policy? Do they have a fair vote on how dress code violations should be addressed? So many questions on how the students defend their rights in the public-school system, yet they cannot have the opportunity to have their opinions heard. Dress code amongst the years have changed amongst the years and not for the better. High School dress code is demoralizing towards females and the consequences are exorbitant.

Fashion reflects the attitudes of a society more than any other art form. Like art, fashion is a material record of the ideals that swayed the nations at the time of their creation. Through examining the styles, and tastes of a particular era, we can realize where the interests and priorities of a time lie. As Frank Parsons wrote in his 1920 study, The Psychology of Dress, "There is surly no better field in which to trace the devious paths of human thought than in that of clothes, where man has ever given free play to self expression, in a way which, thought not always a credit to his intelligence, is yet quite true to his innermost self, whether he will acknowledge it or

If I were to look up, down, left, or right, I knew I was going to find a different style on everyone that were in front of me. Fashion itself is a manifestation of social, economic, political, and cultural transformations upon a community. Being part of the fashion community involves having a collective interest in fashion, but to also have the awareness of your own style that is separate from the others. I have been playing dress-up ever since I can remember with my sister and performing fashion shows for all of my family to see, which has grown into working New York Fashion Week in the summers when I’m not in school. I have never lost my interest in fashion, despite moving out of the city to go to college.

The fashion industry is rapidly growing and constantly generating new fashion trends almost weekly. Fashion for some may seem ridiculous and unnecessary; but fashion is not just a meaningless usage of article of clothing or farcical materials sew together for coverage. There is more to fashion than meets the eyes, fashion is precious and significant. It is a reflection of self-image, it speak the ream about who we are and how we review ourselves. Not only is fashion the reflection of self-image but also the reflection of our history as Coco Channel have said, “Fashion is not something that exist in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” Fashion

I like to create my personal style and help others who cannot seem to wrap their heads around what to wear and how to wear it from fitted pieces to chic ensembles to satisfy their fashion taste buds. I am a creative and I remember in my teenage years I would draw and design outfits. What brought me to fashion was that I found out that the clothes people were wearing was practically the same and I don’t like wearing what every other person is wearing. I like being myself and this led me to explore with various fabric and styles for teenagers and ladies in their 20’s and with time I started making clothes for myself and now I make practically all my clothes by myself and I have helped to satisfy the taste buds of young ladies. So many things inspire me when it comes to styling and fashion; Nature inspires me, fabrics inspire me. I see a fabric and immediately in my subconscious mind, I am already thinking of what pattern or style to create with the fabric. I have inspired fellow twenty somethings with my personal style and fashion statement. I find clothing interesting and fun because it is used to express who I am.

The fashions of the past 100 years greatly differ from the styles of the present. Some of the trends of the trends of our generation were inspired by those years, while others remain out of style. Our fashions are not only brought back from the past, but some are brand new ideas fashion designers create. Fashion is an alternating compilation of styles that suffice diverse people and contradistinctive times. Fashion can be considered an expressive art, with the human physique as its canvas, and as a symbolization of one’s class, employment, imagination, and emotions.
