According to AAA and the federal government DOT, for every 5 mph increase in speed over 60 mph, fuel efficiency drops substantially. Every vehicle uses more fuel as speed increase. The result is more pollutants put into the environment, as well as more gasoline and diesel, derived from crude oil, is consumed, and American dependency on it increases. The faster vehicles go, the greater the chances of accidents. The higher the speed limit, the more people that are not comfortable driving at those speeds. This creates a need for more lane changing as faster cars pass slower ones. Which further enhances the risk of accident. Accidents at higher speeds, increases the chance of more serious injury or death. Hitting an animal on the road at 75mph, will more then double the chances of death to the driver and passengers, and causes more damage to the vehicle, then driving 60. Something as simple and common as a tire blowout, will severely reduce the drivers ability to maintain control.

The faster you drive, the larger the force of impact your car has. This being said, if you were going 60 mph and you crashed into a object, the force of impact would be sudden and jerking. You would definitely feel the impact and are more likely to be injured. However, if you were going 10 mph and you crashed into an object, the force of impact would still be evident, but you would be less likely to be jerked roughly and injured. If you were in a small compact car going 45 mph and are hit by a semi, your injuries are likely to be catastrophic and the driver of the semi’s injuries are likely going to be minor.
In the Japanese light novel “Akuma no Eros,’’ Miu Sakurai acts as the young, virginal, innocent female and Satan acts as the both attractive and illusive older figure with corrupt values. The story revolves around Miu Sakurai; a high-school girl who is in love with her classmate, Shion Amamiya. Miu summons Satan through a book and wishes for Amamiya to fall in love with her and Satan demands her virginity in return. Satan’s spells do not work on Amamiya because he is revealed to be the archangel Michael who ends up confessing his love to Miu without the spells, but Miu has feelings for Satan at this point and Satan is more than willing to make the still maturing teenage girl decide between living her normal life or marrying him and living in hell. Thus Satan robs Miu of her innocence while fueling his desires.
Inexperience: Inexperience can cause accidents because people don’t know what they are doing and therefore can panic and cause collisions or can drive too fast for their skill level and cause collisions in that way. The worst thing people can do is drive to slow for example if someone is driving to slow they could merge into a roadway driving to slow and be rear ended. There have been many occurrences of people driving with inexperience and causing collision due to it. The easiest way to reduce collisions caused by inexperienced drivers is to have them start on a private road and a parking lot until they are comfortable in the vehicle then having them start driving in different conditions until they are
Speeding takes a huge role in many teen crashes that result in fatalities. Going faster than the posted speed limit on a road, means that you are increasing your chances of crashing exponentially. In 2012, 21 % of serious teen crashes were a direct result of going too fast for the road. By going over the speed limit you are not only going too fast for the given roads conditions but you are also increasing the amount of time you will need to stop your vehicle in the event of an obstacle in the road.
Information: Experts say reducing highway speeds from 70 mph to 60 mph would reduce gasoline consumption between 2% and 3%. That could translate into a price reduction of as much as 10%. At today's price, almost 38 cents a gallon.
I never really gave much thought about how much speed limits can affect safety. Growing up, it was drummed into my head that speed kills. It wasn’t until I moved to Germany that I was able to even challenge the phrase “speed kills”. Being able to drive at any speed I want on the Autobahn has produced thoughts that completely destroy the phrase “speed kills”. So… Would lowering the speed limits on highways actually make driving on them safer?
Have you ever been driving and wondered if the speed limit should be adjusted? What about if there should even be speed limits, or if society should be able to drive at whatever speed they would like? In a lot of cases I am sure that someone, if not everyone has had this thought go through their head at least once. Speed limits are a given mile per hour you are allowed by law to travel on a road without being penalized by law enforcement. In some areas the speed limit seems to be too low, while in others we question why it is that fast of a speed.
Driving under the influence and Distracted driving are the biggest ones, however reporting distracted driving is difficult in fatal crashes is difficult to determine since “information pointing to distraction is gathered through self-reporting, witness testimony, and evidence indicating distraction” (GHOS). Those two make up roughly 400 of the fatalities in 2015. Speeding is another huge cause for many crashes whether it’s from being reckless to just being distracted and not noticing. Speed plays a part in both of the other causes, and it played a part in 19% of crashes in 2015. A huge amount of these fatalities not only come between drivers, but also with a singular driver hitting and killing a pedestrian. Many things have been tried to reduce these major causes of the crashes such as stricter enforcement of speed and driving under the influence. Campaigns have been launched to reduce distracted driving, targeting those heavy phone users and even car manufacturers joining in.
The excess mileage leads to additional pollution. The exhaust also contains nitrogen oxide, which can lead to nutrient-related problems in the environment.
Furthermore it is proven older drivers have fewer accidents than younger drivers there is a tendency that they will be involved in more fatal accidents as they are older and their bodies more frail than younger drivers. (4)
Keep in mind that the interstate speed limits average at least 60mph and the basic cars from the year 2000 – 2015 can go up to 110 mph why is there a need for a speed limit. If the driver in front of you hits the brake then you can switch lanes and speed back up, or slow down behind that vehicle. Interstates have a lot of crashes due to sleeping at the wheel, not paying attention, and drunk driving. None usually have to do with exceeding speed limits and if they do it is because the driver isn’t comfortable with the speed he is driving
Basically the higher the speed of a vehicle, the more difficult collision avoidance becomes and the greater the damage if a collision does occur.
Third reason of accidents on the road is teenage drivers. “2,739 teenagers died in car accidents in the United States during 2008 ", (drivesteady.com). Some teenagers cause fatal accidents, because of immaturity and lack of experience. Teenagers are very impulsive. Although not intending to hurt anyone, they sometimes drive very aggressively. It is not difficult to find teenagers driving with one hand on the steering wheel, seat pushed back, and with loud music playing. In traffic they go wild, trying to seek attention. They underestimate the risk of what they are doing. All these acts result in serious consequences on the road. Many accidents of young drivers result from their own mistakes.
