According to AAA and the federal government DOT, for every 5 mph increase in speed over 60 mph, fuel efficiency drops substantially. Every vehicle uses more fuel as speed increase. The result is more pollutants put into the environment, as well as more gasoline and diesel, derived from crude oil, is consumed, and American dependency on it increases. The faster vehicles go, the greater the chances of accidents. The higher the speed limit, the more people that are not comfortable driving at those speeds. This creates a need for more lane changing as faster cars pass slower ones. Which further enhances the risk of accident. Accidents at higher speeds, increases the chance of more serious injury or death. Hitting an animal on the road at 75mph, will more then double the chances of death to the driver and passengers, and causes more damage to the vehicle, then driving 60. Something as simple and common as a tire blowout, will severely reduce the drivers ability to maintain control.
