Fat Vegans
Rejecting the commodity status of animals and abstaining from animal products may still unconsciously be terrible for vegans. While many animal loving, herbivorous, vegans believe that they are doing what is best for the environment and their bodies, research argues the opposite. From cutting out meat, selecting processed foods, and making pricely decisions, vegans can still be creating terrible decisions resulting in obesity and poor health. Vegans often cut out animal products due to the pain and suffering of the animals, as well as meat-related diseases. Chickens in facilities frequently die from antibiotic resistance and are trampled to death. For example, contract farmer Carole Morison admits that her chicken farm is unsafe and unsanitary (Food, Inc.). Some farmers realize the cruelty they cause to animals, yet they cannot afford the fix the problem. In addition to chickens, cows are also being abused. Products labeled to have fewer calories are not always the healthier option. 160 calories in a soda does not have the same health benefits as 160 calories worth of almonds (Fed Up!). Vegans often purchase foods that claim to be healthier simply because they do not contain animal products, but they lack what is needed to satisfy the body. Processed meals/products still contain large amounts of sugar and chemicals that are meant to substitute for the animal products. “Junk is still junk, even if it’s less junky” (Fed Up!). While there are fewer calories in these products, and are easier and more convenient, they are still not the best choice available. Food helps you feel better and improves your health (Forks over Knives).
