Rejecting the commodity status of animals and abstaining from animal products may still unconsciously be terrible for vegans. While many animal loving, herbivorous, vegans believe that they are doing what is best for the environment and their bodies, research argues the opposite. From cutting out meat, selecting processed foods, and making pricely decisions, vegans can still be creating terrible decisions resulting in obesity and poor health. Vegans often cut out animal products due to the pain and suffering of the animals, as well as meat-related diseases. Chickens in facilities frequently die from antibiotic resistance and are trampled to death. For example, contract farmer Carole Morison admits that her chicken farm is unsafe and unsanitary (Food, Inc.). Some farmers realize the cruelty they cause to animals, yet they cannot afford the fix the problem. In addition to chickens, cows are also being abused. Products labeled to have fewer calories are not always the healthier option. 160 calories in a soda does not have the same health benefits as 160 calories worth of almonds (Fed Up!). Vegans often purchase foods that claim to be healthier simply because they do not contain animal products, but they lack what is needed to satisfy the body. Processed meals/products still contain large amounts of sugar and chemicals that are meant to substitute for the animal products. “Junk is still junk, even if it’s less junky” (Fed Up!). While there are fewer calories in these products, and are easier and more convenient, they are still not the best choice available. Being vegan can reduce/slow the rise in climate change and help the environment become a better place. The production of meat and other animal by-products affect the environment; from the crops and water required to feed the animals, to the transportation and process it takes in order to prepare the animals for human gormandizing. To produce one pound of meat it takes about 2,400 gallons of water. All this water consumption goes to waste, just for humans to consume the little piece of meat for their own short-lived entertainment. However, it takes about 25 gallons to grow one pound of wheat. On the flip side, a community health program in California found that participants who switched to a low-fat, near-vegan diet -- and also boosted their physical activity -- saw their levels of bad cholesterol drop by 14 percent, their rates of high blood-pressure cut in half, and their weight reduced by an average of 7 1/2 pounds. Look at this way, animal agriculture has done a lot to contribute to the woes we are facing as a result of climate change because animal greenhouse gases contribute a sizable percentage of emissions clouding the planet. Taking the vegan route as it were, comes with obvious benefits like a reducing the individual carbon footprint and opportunity to eat more nutritious and fresher foods. In deed studies have shown that people on vegan diet have lower levels of cholesterol levels and are able to maintain healthy body weight.
All animal products, such as eggs, milk, and leather, are derived using methods that add to animal suffering. In the case of both dairy and egg production, male calves and chicks are often killed unnecessarily since they are of no benefit to the farmer, and often experience cruel treatment leading up to their deaths. Likewise, buying leather necessitates killing animals for their pelts; even by abstaining from meat, widespread animal suffering will continue to occur in order to fulfill the demand for these other products. There are, of course, a select few cases in which individual households farm the animals they raise in a much more ethical manner, but they do not represent enough of the population to make a difference in this circumstance. Veganism has been a popular topic in the media in the past few years. Veganism is abstaining from consuming or using products made from animals or products that harm and exploit animals. A common argument for veganism is common human ethics. These ethics say that it is wrong to harm a being that cannot protect itself. This creates a problem because of the violence it causes all over the world from protestors starting fights or bystanders starting conflicts with the protestors. I believe that the vegans are right when it comes to the ethics that change their lifestyle. Treating animals and testing products on them, which are not meant for them, is wrong. Especially because the animals cannot defend themselves.

Social media has had a huge impact on what we eat, with homemade videos of a ‘backyard’ slaughterhouse, to the display of animal cruelty. These pathetic attempts to convert everyone into choosing to live a vegan lifestyle has only persuaded the weak minded. People who are too gullible to find out the real story. In New Zealand, there are many rules and regulations about the welfare of animals both throughout their lives and slaughter. The whole video of the calves being mistreated was located in a backyard slaughterhouse, yet this one individual managed to give all dairy farmers a bad name. Dairy NZ regulations and guidelines state that is banned to kill calves with blunt force trauma. Also that during slaughter, no animal must come under any undue stress, pain, or discomfort. But, I have been taught to care about animals because they have feelings and emotions just like us. So I don’t mind the challenges that come with being vegan. We do not have the right to raise one animal on a higher pedestal than another based solely on the way we were conditioned. A dog is no different from a pig or a cow in terms of their emotions and behavior. Being a vegan also says that I am steadfast in my beliefs and that I have an empathetic soul. I am able to discern right from wrong and follow my heart in regards to veganism, as well as other aspects of my life. I care so deeply about other living beings and share a special bond with anyone going through formidable times because I always want to help those in need. Some would not be able to live without eating any animal products in their diets, such as, meat, fish, poultry, eggs, dairy products, and honey. For vegans, however, this is a normal way of life. Vegans are frequently misunderstood as either people who have eating disorders, or an unnatural passion for animal rights. It is time for people to realize that veganism, a challenging yet rewarding lifestyle, goes way beyond being skinny or caring for animals. In reality, veganism can be extremely advantageous to anyone who adapts it as a way of life and has many different benefits that come along with it.
