In the book, The Alchemist, fate is most definitely a reoccurring theme, and is one that is talked about actively by the characters in the story, even if they don't use the exact word. Sometimes Santiago refers to his personal legend, and this can definitely be compared to fate, though fate is something that is most likely unknown, whereas personal legend is what a person believes their fate to be. Santiago believes that is personal legend involves him traveling to the pyramids in Egypt, and finding a treasure there. This may or may not be his actual fate, but it is definitely something he believes in. But it goes beyond this. Fate seems to be something that is actively spoken about, and most seem to believe in it, what with beliefs in

This quote applies to Santiago’s journey, as he had to give up most of his possessions to continue his adventure. The specific events I will be analyzing are Santiago selling his sheep and the thief who stole his money. At the beginning of the book, Santiago always wanted to travel.
Although Ender and Santiago's stories were not alike, they both shared the attributes of a hero's journey, like the call and the mentor stages. In the book Ender's game, Ender demonstrates attributes of a hero's journey, one of which, is the mentor stage. Colonel Graff realized early on in the book that Ender was special. Santiago must be tested before he can fulfill his Personal Legend. Only then can he comprehend the Language of the World. Even though Santiago had already encountered many other obstacles, the first time his life was truly in danger was during the tribal wars. He is told that in order to achieve his Personal Legend a person must be willing to risk everything they have. At the end of the story the alchemist leaves Santiago alone to complete his journey because the alchemist knows that to realize his Personal Legend, Santiago must take those last steps himself:
In the beginning of The Alchemist, Santiago asks Melchizedek: “These are good omens” (pg.29). This is a Telegraphic sentence emphasizing Omens ability to break through fate and help you to follow your journey to find and achieve your destiny. Omens also serve to demonstrate Santiago’s spiritual growth throughout the story. The motif of omens serves to offer guidance on Santiago’s journey and reassure him that the Soul of the World has endorsed his journey. Melchizedek states, omens are part of the Universal Language, and if Santiago understands this language he can find meaning in his environment. For example, Santiago considers the event of the stones Urim and Thummim falling from his pocket as an omen. In doing so, he fines meaning in this

The Alchemist was written by Brazilian author Paulo Coelho. The main character in The Alchemist is Santiago, a young shepherd who gives up a life he is comfortable with in order to pursue his dreams. Throughout the story various characters impact Santiago's journey including Melchizedek. Melchizedek, the King of Salem, meets Santiago early in the novel and influences him to follow his dreams, in my opinion Melchizedek is the true hero in the story. Santiago met Melchizedek shortly after his visit with a dream interpreter who told him he should follow his dream and travel to Egypt to find a treasure. However, that didn’t stop him from following his dream of wanting to travel. The novel states that, “The secret of life is to fall seven times to get up eight times” even after you encounter obstacles in life, it is important to stay focused on your goals and never give up on your dreams. After Santiago got robbed he found a job and worked extremely hard for years to save enough money to make the trip to the pyramids. This novel also reads that, “There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.” Never let fear conquer your mind’s ability to achieve your dreams as fear is your dreams worst enemy.
