Walker McBride Mrs. Ruiz English IV 28 February 2024. To control the future, one must cover up their past. The tragedy of Macbeth, written by William Shakespeare, tells the story of a Scottish nobleman's obsession with the future and need to bury the past. When Macbeth's royal future is told to him by 3 mysterious witches, he makes hasty, murderous and regrettable choices to take hold of the throne. During his race to the top, Macbeth loses everything that he holds close to him.
Nevertheless, Macbeth quickly discounts these bloody visions of murder and continues to fantasize about his future glories. Furthermore, when Macbeth encounters the witches, we are only told a quick summary of the prophecy, “All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor!” (1.3.52).and then, “All hail Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!” (1.3.53). Yet the witches do not reveal the means by which Macbeth will come about this glory or mention any ill deeds that are to come. This leaves one to believe that the witches knew Macbeth’s fate as Thane and King, yet the other bloody elements of the prophecy are enacted solely through Macbeth’s own will. Macbeth is only prompted in his bloody actions by supernatural forces and of course Lady Macbeth.
Macbeth is foreshadowed by the three witches who become the Thane of Caldore. At first, he was confused, then hesitant to believe him. The witches say, “Macbeth will be a thane, Macbeth will be king, and Banquo's sons will be king." 1.3.51-54. The 'Secondary' of the 'Secondary' of the 'Secondary' of the 'Secondary' of the 'Secondary' of the 'Secondary' of It was Macbeth's actions that got him to where he ended up.
“Stars, hide your fires; Let not light see my black and deep desires”(I, 4, 52-53) This is exactly what the stars did in Macbeth by William Shakespeare. Macbeth wanted Happiness in his life but to get that he used moral sacrifices that led to his demise and no purpose of living. This is demonstrated in the dagger speech and the Tomorrow speech that will be discussed showing his ambition for power and happiness to his demise.

Motif- Fair is Foul, Foul is Fair, Fair is foul and foul is fair is a significant Motif used by Shakespeake in Macbeth to foreshadow the direction of the events that will soon be unfolding. The play of Macbeth is introduced by the witches preaching the motif, Fair is foul and Foul is Fair. The appearance of this motif continues throughout the play, but it used in the opening scene, stating fair is foul, and foul is fair, hover through the fog and filthy air (Act I.1.13). Shakespeare does this in order to show the reader the things that seem fair are disguised as something foul. Later in Act 1, Macbeth expresses So foul and fair a day I have not seen (Act I.3.17).
Macbeth first learns from the witches that he shall be Thane of Cawdor. Along with Lady Macbeth he begins to wonder if there is something more for him besides just being the Thane of Cawdor and begins to contemplate murdering King Duncan. “We still have judgement here, that we but teach / Bloody instructions, which, being taught, return / To plague th’ inventor” (1.7.8-10). Here the quote represents at this point in time Macbeth has a conscience and is able to differentiate what is right and what is wrong. Comparing this to his end frame of mind in the play you can see how many morals and the sense of judgement he lost along the way. He arrives at his ending state of mind because Lady Macbeth convinces him to murder King Duncan and he starts to realize that power is a very important thing that he must
It was the moment that the witches first cast the prophecy over Macbeth that sealed his fate forever. Without the witches foretelling his rise to power as Thane of Cawdor and as the future king of Scotland, the idea would have never came to him. He was a modest character. Once the witches put those thoughts in Macbeth's mind, they started to bother him as he kept thinking about it and the idea soon consumed him. He did not believe what they said, once he was granted the title Thane of Cawdor, he started to consider that it could possibly be true. There is a obvious difference in his attitude about the prophecy before and
Fate always plays a dangerously important role in the lives of men, and knowing their destinies can make people do things that may be good or bad. Although Macbeth was a good general, fighting with the interest of protecting his country from invaders, his destiny forbade it and he was changed into cold, heartless tyrant. Even when he tried to resist his fate, the very thing he did, was what caused his death in the end. This illustrates the unsurmountable power of fate and the path set out for us. We can’t avoid it, and no matter what we do , we are always drawn back to what was meant to be. Often, this is what causes people to do unnatural (bad) things out of desperation.
Macbeth becomes paranoid that Banquo know what he has done. If the weird sisters prediction is right about Banquo being a father of a king which would be a threat to his crown. He reveals his plan to Lady Macbeth.
Fate is one person's destiny, it cannot be understood by mere mortals but a greater power beyond human comprehension. Fate is so powerful that it controls a person's outcome on life before it happens. Many people become victims of fate in which they catch a glimpse of what their future is going to look like, but do not totally grasp the outcome. Macbeth cannot fully comprehend the possible outcome of his fate because he is mortal, and therefore is a victim to his power driven quest and his ultimate fate. Many have been said to agree with this statement. For example, as stated in Shakespeare A to Z, "The Witches are an enactment of the irrational. The supernatural world if terrifying because it is beyond human control, and in the play it is
After the witches tells Macbeth the prophecy, he can choose not listen to them, even the prophecy is right, he did become Thane of Cawdor. It is his ambition that makes him choose to kill Duncan, he decides he wants to be the king, no one had forced him before Lady Macbeth knows it. If he was truly loyal to the King and never thinks about revolt, he would choose not to kill the King. It is what he was, he wants to be King deep inside his heart, not because of fate.
Fate has sundry meanings. One of the meanings of fate: power that predetermines events. Destiny’s definition suggests that events will occur and do not change. Whatever unravels in life cannot change by mankind. The statement has undivulged meanings; fate has the opportunity to change if the person wants events to end differently. However, wrong decisions will only seal fate. In Shakespeare’s Macbeth, The fate becomes confirmed through Lady Macbeth wanting more power, Macbeth’s inner conflict, and the three witches tricking Macbeth and leading him to his demise.
Fleance does not return back to Macbeth’s castle shows that he has control over his own fate by opposing to the future that the witches had seen in their prophecy. “Thou shalt get kings, though thou be none” (act1 scene3 line 70) In the beginning of the play the witches had foretell Banquo that his sons will become the king. Macbeth strongly believes in the witches prophecy. He commits murder against Banquo and Fleance in order to fight against the destiny that the witches had prophesied. “Thou may ’st revenge —O slave!”(act scene line) Banquo urges Fleance to escape and someday to take revenge of this gory tragedy. The reader expects Fleance to return to Macbeth’s castle to take revenge by murdering Macbeth similarly like he had done to his father. Though, the reader loses where he had fled in the story after he had escaped from that scene. This may show that he would not become the king. As the witches recite in the beginning of the play. “Fair is foul, foul is fair”(act scene line), Macbeth acts as what the witches had said. He is brainwashed by the evil spirits, he has no more control over himself. He believes that he is doing the right thing but he is actually trapping himself in a difficult situation. Although, both Banquo and Fleance opposes to this
Macbeth is one of Shakespeare’s most famous plays. In this play, Shakespeare uses fate as a theme. Macbeth learns his fate early, which leads to another theme in this book, fall of man.
