There is an outstanding conflict throughout the play, Doubt, if Father Flynn is innocent or guilty. There is substantial evidence that Father Flynn is not guilty. Three reasons for this are that Donald was caught drinking wine, Sister Aloysius lied, and Father Flynn was making Donald not feel isolated from his peers. After talking to Father Flynn in the rectory, Donald was discovered, by Mr. McGinn, drinking wine—and hiding away from others. The evidence from this that he is not guilty was that Donald claimed to have taken the wine. On the contrary, there was no tangible evidence that Father Flynn had not given Donald the wine, (33 Shanley). Another reason why Father Flynn is not guilty is because Sister Aloysius admitted to lying, (58 Shanley).
In addition to this, there was evidence that claims against Frank were false, but this information never surfaced to the public. Contrary to public belief, Corinthia Hall, an employee of the Pencil Factory, claimed that Frank’s conduct toward female employees was irreproachable. In addition to this, no one contradicted any of Frank’s claims of his whereabouts on the day of the murder.
Chick Gandil reported to Sullivan about the progress of recruiting his teammates. Sport Sullivan knew that he couldn't complete the fix without having Joe Jackson on his side. (3) Sullivan kept bugging Chick Gandil to get Jackson involved and told him to offer $20,000. (1) Lefty Williams went to Joe Jackson's hotel room one night to give Joe $5,000 in an envelope. (2) Joe refused to accept it and after an argument left his own room. Lefty threw the envelope in the room and left. This was huge in the trial because Joe claimed to never have never have accepted the envelope and Lefty said that he just left it in the room after the argument and that Joe had never accepted it. Because Williams wouldn't have gained anything from lying for Joe we should believe their testimonies. (2)
It is ostensible that through our extensive investigation, we have revealed an abundant quantity of reasons and a plethora of vigorous auxiliary evidence to authenticate the innocence of the defendant, Ozie Powell. We postulate that Ozie Powell is utterly guiltless and that Victoria Price and Ruby Bates have formulated elaborate fabrications about the manifestation of rape on the 25th of March, 1931. Ozie Powell is innocent, and will be declared innocent.
In the book, And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie, I was surprised that the judge decided that Anthony Marston was the least guilty. In my opinion, he was the most guilty. Not only was he drinking and driving, but he ran over two kids and felt no remorse whatsoever. If he wasn't as guilty, then he would have at least felt bad about what he did.
John Proctor: Dynamic Character The Salem witch trials occurred in the Puritan town of Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. The Crucible , written by Arthur Miller and published in 1953, is a somewhat accurate depiction of the occurrences of this time. These trials that took place in Salem, portray the chaos and bewilderment that came to be of a small religious town, who became divided and torn. One character in particular from this is John Proctor.
It is difficult to make the decision if Father Flynn is innocent or guilty. In John Patrick Shanley’s Doubt; a parable, he eclipses the truth very well. The scenes about the toy, the camping trip and the undershirt cause much confusion; causing the audience to go back and forth in their minds and doubt Father Flynn. Law says that people are innocent until proven guilty although; realistically, everyone knows that people are guilty until proven innocent. It is very possible that Father Fynn is only helping Donald, because he is less fortunate than the other students at his school; and it is also very possible that he is hurting the child by molesting him. The decision is left to the audience as the jury.
In the parable Doubt, Father Flynn’s innocence is very debatable. Sister Aloysius suspects that he is a child molester. He denies it when confronted but there is some evidence that points to his guilt. Sister James does not want to believe his guilt but is unsure as Sister Aloysius is so determined. Father Flynn is clearly guilty for several reasons, for one because of his actions early in the story, and also because of his decision to leave St. Nicholas Catholic School.

Others could find more emotions shown in metaphors to show a deeper meaning. In the third act of the play, Proctor confesses that he is an adulterer and he explains why he would not lie about it. When Proctor said that Abigail was the person he was having an affair with it shows that his name is now tainted. Since his respectable name is tainted it has shown his sincerity in his claim that Abigail had an affair with
Reverend Parris and Proctor are foils to each other because Reverend Parris cares about his reputation while Proctor does not care about how the community views him, Reverend Parris tells people to lie to save there own lives. Proctor commits lechery with Abigail and this consumes him throughout the play, and Reverend Parris is confident while Proctor on the other hand goes from doubt to uncertainty to being forced to confess the truth that he has been holding in throughout the play.
Throughout the play, Arsenic and Old Lace, Teddy is characterized as being insane because he believes that he is President Roosevelt. A number of the characters are thought of as being insane, but Teddy differs greatly in that he is harmless. He would never do anything to hurt anyone. Teddy’s insanity shows when he tells Elaine that he is going to Panama, but it is actually the cellar. When Mortimer speaks to Teddy, he replies as if he were the president. He says “Bully, thank you. Just bully! What news have you brought me?” This demonstrates that Teddy truly thinks that Mortimer is bringing him information as president. When Teddy goes down to the cellar (Panama), he thinks that he is digging locks for the canal, but he is actually digging graves for his aunts’ “charity”. This shows how naive he is because he doesn’t realize that he is helping the charity by digging graves for the victims. He also
Mr Birling is shaken by the investigation. He doesn’t learn any lessons during the course of the play. When it seems that the Inspector might have been an imposter he is overjoyed and mocks the others for having been 'tricked' by the investigation. Inspector Goole drives forward the drama, with his questions creating shocking moments and gripping cliff-hangers for the audience. By the
2. Why does the County Attorney care so much about discovering a motive for the killing ?
All of these actions illustrate that he was found mentally disturbed and illustrate that he therefore, is not guilty by reason of
Sister Aloysius does not have any evidence yet she is certain that Father Flynn is guilty. Shanley is illustrating that one does not need evidence to be confident about a given claim. In this way, Shanley illustrates through the concept of doubt that a person can be right about a given suspicion without any proof.
