Father’s Impact on Christopher In the Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, Father is the most influential character to Christopher because he is always there for him, but he also hides the truth from him which causes Christopher to pursue his passion of being a detective and writer. In this book Father is supportive of Christopher’s goals and dreams which encourages Christopher in writing his book. Father shows this when he explains to Mother that he does everything for Christopher from cooking his meals to worrying about him when he wanders off somewhere at night. Father says, "I cooked his meals. I cleaned his clothes. I looked after him every weekend. I looked after him when he was ill. I took him to the doctor. …show more content…
Hence, Father puts a lot of time into taking care of Christopher. This also demonstrates how Father wants to make sure Christopher is safe and not in any trouble. This influences Christopher because if Father wasn't there for him it is possible he could be an orphan. Another example of when Father shows that he is always there for him is at the Police Station. Christopher gets arrested for assaulting a police officer in the middle of the night and his Dad comes to get him and he is angry because they are holding him in a cell. When he sees Christopher he spreads his fingers out in a fan, which shows that he loves him. Christopher Illustrates, "It was 1:12 a.m. when father arrived at the police station... He held up his right hand and spread his fingers out in a fan... (Haddon 16). Hence, Father is always there for Christopher even when he gets into trouble. It also shows how Father loves Christopher because he spread his fingers out in a fan which is their way of showing they love and trust each other. This …show more content…
He shows this when he is apologizing to Christopher about hiding the truth from him and killing an innocent animal. Father says, "Christopher, I’m really, really sorry. About everything. About Wellington, About the letters. About making you run away. I never meant … I promise I will never do anything like that again. Hey. Come on, kiddo" (Haddon 197). Hence, Father is truly sorry about hiding the truth from him and he says he won't ever do anything like that again. In this passage you can also see how much emotion and sincerity is put into Father's apology which shows that he isn't making it up. This had a big influence on Christopher because after this apology Christopher started to trust his father more and more. Another example of when Father father hides the truth from him is when he lies about what happened to his mother. Christopher was snooping around Father's room looking for his book his Father hid and he found letters that were addressed to him. He then presumes to open the letters and learn that his Mother was still alive and that Father lied to him for almost two years. Christopher illustrates, “Mother had not had a heart attack. Mother had not died. Mother had been alive the whole time. And father had lied about this (Haddon 113). Hence, Christopher is very upset with his Father and he has a very hard time
In trying to find out who murdered Wellington, Christopher uncovers a box containing letters from his mother addressed to him. Prior to this incident, Christopher’s father, Mr. Boone, told him that his mother passed away due to a heart attack while in the hospital. In addition, Christopher was unable to visit her. The date of the supposed death did not match up with the recent inscription on the letters, indicating his father lying about her death. Mr. Boone soon finds out about Christopher’s discovery, struggling to explain the situation: “I did it for your good, Christopher. Honestly, I did. I never meant to lie...I just thought
At the beginning of the story, he believed that his mom had died and he ends up finding out that his father was lying to him the whole time. Also, his father tells Christopher to stop looking for whoever killed Wellington, and the reason he tells him to stop is because he did it. His father knows that Christopher's life is hard, and he just makes it harder. For example Haddon writes, “I was cold and I was frightened Father might come out and find me. But I felt safer in the garden because I was hidden. (pg. 126) This shows that not only does Christopher's father make life harder, but he scares christopher and as a father, the last thing you should be doing is scaring your son, especially if he has a mental
Haygood start his essay with a story of how told his playmates that he didn't have father. He would "explain to friends, with the simplicity of explaining to someone that there are, in some wood, no deer, that I just had no father" (Haygood). Father is a person, who guide their child's to the right path. Fatherless
And... OK, maybe I don’t tell the truth all the time. God knows, I try, Christopher, God knows I do, but... Life is difficult, you know. It’s bloody hard telling the truth all the time. Sometimes it’s impossible.”
The narrator and his father have the kind of relationship where on the surface it might come off as cold because they’re reserved and don’t openly share thoughts and emotions but, underneath it all, the narrator must feel some respect for his father because he still contemplates over the advice his father gave him.
Father had murdered Wellington, That meant he could murder me, because I couldn't trust him, even though he had said 'Trust me,' because he had told a lie about a big thing." (Chapter 167, p. 122) This quote is a great example of how he can not trust his dad or really
When his father is yelling at him for continuing to investigate he brings up that fact that he is Christopher's only caretaker. “What am I going to do with you? What the fuck am I going to do with you?” (Haddon 82) This shows that his father is his only support, and therefore has power over him, by asking what he’s going to do to him, he tells the audience that he can do anything with, or to Christopher. His father has complete and total control over Christopher, even is his own home Christopher has no power, no autonomy. Which when you consider that he has such strict boundaries this leads to a inner conflict. He needs the support of his father and the independence he desires but these are conflicting needs, he cannot have both, meaning that his needs will never be fully satisfied. He will always struggle to find what he needs while also keeping himself in mind. On the same note, his father’s power over Christopher isolates him. Christopher gets into a physical fight with his father, they each land a few blows but in the end, after learning his father killed the dog, we see Christopher decided that he cannot stay in the house, he’s too fearful of his father, and he spends the first night out in the garden, alone and afraid. “I went round the back of the shed, and I squeezed into the gap between the wall of the shed and the fence” (Haddon 124). In this scene
“Then he said, “ I’m sorry Christopher. I promise you, I never meant for it to turn out like this”
Through Christopher’s eyes the reader is able to observe Ed’s diligently for his son. This is evident in their day-to-day routine, as he “cooked Christopher’s meals. [He] cleaned his clothes… [He] looked after him when he was ill. [He] worried himself sick every time he wandered off” (page 240).
They nurture him and take care of all of his needs. But to maintain a healthy and happy relationship both parties need to trust each other and when someone breaks that bond of trust for the first time, its just simply really hard to get the other person's trust back. In the quote “Your mother was very good friends with Mr. Shears” (60) we realise that Christopher's mother wasn't happy with her life and was in a state of mind where she needed to breathe and she needed something new. So she went looking for something else, something that would get her mind off of things and that's when she met Mr. Shears and cheated on Christopher's father. Therefore throwing away all the trust he had on her. Christopher's father does not tell Christopher the truth, instead he tells him that his mom died.”I told you to keep your nose out of other people's business” Christopher's father says on page (49). He doesn't want Christopher to do research because he is afraid that he will find out that his father is lying to him therefore not trusting him any longer. Which would be horrible for both of them because they have each other, and that is the only thing they have in this
He copes to finding out his father lied and his mother was still alive. Christopher changes his personality toward his father when he found out father had lied to him. After a while christopher found out that his father was the one who killed wellington straight away a thought coming up in his headed that “Father had murdered wellington. That meant he could murdered me” so he started to plan a way to escaped the situation and the only way for him to escaped is to ran to his mother
In the curious incident of the dog in the night time, the character father is the most influential character to Christopher because he is deceitful and over protective, which impacts him in a negative way, he make Christopher runaway from home and now carries around a pocket knife, because of father. Throughout the book The curious incident if the dog and the night time father, Ed Boone, is the most influential character in the book, because he is deceitful. Father had been lying to Christopher about the death of Wellington, which made the truth so much more impactful to Christopher. Father exclaims "I killed Wellington, Christopher." (Haddon 120) Christopher does not like human contact, that's why him and his father touch
Christopher’s father had come to take him out of jail, however Christopher was supposed stay out of trouble, otherwise he would get into deeper trouble. But Christopher was stubborn and still decided to continue the investigation to find out who killed Wellington. His father kept on scolding him on doing so, and he attempted to restrain Christopher from investigating, he even told him to keep his nose out of other’s business. Despite that Christopher was very stubborn
These short and simple paragraphs convey Christopher’s thoughts and opinions towards his mother’s death. However, strangely there is no emotions conveyed in this passage which suggests that Christopher has a very different way of thinking and processing events to a ‘normal’ person. He did not seem to be upset with the loss of his mother at all.
At the end of the book Christopher and his father had started getting reunited after a rough period of distrust. Christopher’s father showed his commitment to their new beginning by getting Christopher a dog. At that moment as a reader I was moved and touched by the heartfelt resolution. Entertainment is something a reader
