The island is burning, fear and flames fill the eyes of the littleluns, gray smoke and crispy ashes fill the gloomy sky. Tree after tree is burning due to the malicious acts of Jack and his makeshift society. What was once a cordial and civilized group, is now a pack of wild animals. “When you put those together, you get a volatile mix that creates an inability to govern your own behavior…. You’re not really aware of your own thought processes…. People who are in this state don’t think of long term consequences” ( Adelmann 2). In The Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, Jack craves for power and in order to get that he must kill Ralph for it; he burns the island in order to find him. Many factors such as fear and the hunger for power cause the boys to act like chaotic savages; it changes the way they act entirely and makes them commit crimes that can potentially harm oneself and others. Therefore, this mindset deteriorates the boys’ confidence of getting rescued and is the main reason why this civilization diminishes. …show more content…
Fear shuts the doors to opportunity and causes people to commit acts that they wouldn’t normally do. Fear controls human acts and behavior because it manipulates and changes our perspective. It also caused the death of Simon and Piggy because it made the boys act like savages. In the book many of the boys fear Jack because he is extremely greedy and imperious. Jack seems to think that he can get away with almost everything because he is the “better” person or leader. On the inside Jack is trembling with fear; he uses the idea of hunting pigs as a way to escape. It is impossible to avoid fear, you can only overcome it. Also, the boys are scared of this so called “ Beastie” even though it is only a figment of their imagination. Thus, the group of boys need to conquer their fears if they want to return to their families and back to
In 1971, a psychologist Philip Zimbardo conducted an experiment to see the impact of fear. What did fear do to man? He was able to simulate an experiment with prisoners and guards and found out at the end of his experiment that the prisoner had severe stress and anxiety. The experiment demonstrated “the powerful role that the situation can play in human behavior”. This experiment showed what a particular situation can influence human behavior. In the book, The Lord of the Flies, the characters are on a stranded island where the environment is governing their human behavior and how they react to one another. The character are influenced by fear and behave in ways that they normally would not act in their everyday lives. Man is controlled by fear and it can cause him to do things that he would never imagine doing. Fear results in letting go of your natural instincts and goes to your survival instincts, and makes you become an animal.
Fear is a very common theme shown in Lord of The Flies. At the beginning of Lord of The Flies we are introduced to Jack and we get the sense of him being obnoxious and evil as he believes he’s great at everything and wants to be in power. Jack uses fear to become a leader role in this book, in fact the only reason Jack is even viewed as a leader is due to the other boys fearing defying Jack and his views. Jack uses the fear as a form of punishment and the fear of “the beast” to manipulate the boys into forcing his agenda which is that hunting is the main priority. Jack also uses fear to maintain authority as proven after the beast was supposedly killed he proposes that it could return. Ralph, a logical wise boy, was another leader role on the island. Jack uses fear to ensure he steals all of Ralph's followers to push his own agenda.
Fear can control a lot of things, and can make people do some things they wouldn’t normally think about. It can pull people together, or push them apart. In Lord of the Flies it pushes the boys apart. But in The Village it pulls them together. In both cases, the fear wasn’t real. The beast from LOTF and “those they don’t speak of” in The Village. Fear plays a big role in both of these. I believe fear is an easy thing to overuse and control people with, in LOTF and The Village they use fear as a way of power and controlment.
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was right in saying that the “only thing we have to fear is fear itself”. Jack Merridew’s evil ways are evident as he uses fear to control the boys on the island. In the beginning of the book, his presence itself at the election of chief instills the first of the fears within each of the boys. Jack uses his personality as a menace to the boys on the island. Although Jack garners support from the majority of the group, they assist him only through fear of what he is capable of doing to them if they do not do as he commands. As one can see multiple times throughout the book, Jack deems it necessary to hunt down pigs on the island, but why? Jack carries a demon inside of him that allows him to do such acts. If things are not done as he wishes, his fury is unleashed on everyone around him. While the others find hunting as a chance for adventure, Jack practices it as if it were a ritual. This ritual extends beyond the pig caught between the “creepers”; pigs are eventually replaced with human flesh. The boys’ fear keep them in the circle of dancing for they are afraid that one of them will be the next in the center of the dance. This outlook on violence is what drives the fear inside them. Later on, Jack uses the belief of the beast to further enlarge the terror of the schoolboys. The idea of the beast was originally brought up by a “littlun” but Jack uses the little boy’s fear to his advantage. The sacrifices made, the spears, and the face
In 1950, the British mathematician and philosopher Bertrand Russell once stated, “To conquer fear is the beginning of wisdom.”. During the same time, the world was gripped by the fear of communism and the possibility of nuclear attacks during the Cold War. Published in 1954, the novel Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, expresses the ramifications of fear in a group of young English boys that have been stranded on an island. Golding explores both the physical and chemical reactions of fear, as well as the connection to communism and how it relates to the dynamic on the island.

Fear is a destructive emotion because it can lead to all kinds of evil. The morning after Simon's death Piggy and Ralph are talking,”we was scared!!..anything might of happened”(Golding 156). Piggy is trying to find an explanation on why he was part of Simon's murder and tries to play it off as an accident. He was saying that because he is scared it doesn't matter that he killed someone, that fear took control of him and it was out of his hands, thus leading to evil. Jack at this point in the story and has given up all hope of being rescued and is now hunting Ralph. “ He forgot his wounds, his hunger and thirst, and became fear; hopeless fear on flying feet, rushing through the forest towards the open beach”(Golding 200). Fear is leading to all kinds of evil in this piece of text because Jack has given up on being saved so he is facing the fact that he needs all the power to survive. After Jack realizes this and is fearful he turns to evil and tries to kill Ralph while Ralph is trying to get away.
In the Novel lord of the flies, it is evident that the stranded school boys attempt to build a civilization. Throughout the building of this new civilization the most challenging factor is leading the school boys and keeping the young boys on track, which is hard enough let alone being on an island with no adults. This making their civilization fragile. A constant fear is looming around the boys, which in the end is what breaks this fragile society. A fear of many factors including; Being stranded forever possibly, A beast and starvation. These fears divide the group of school boys and blinds the boys from the most important goal, surviving till their rescue.
Fear is unique, and can manifest itself in many different ways, like nightmares, or uncertainty before doing an activity that is risky. For many, when the word “fear” is said to them, they think of their worst fears, such as clowns, ghosts, heights, and what not. Yet, on an island on which a plane full of boys crash lands, some uncommon fears lead to total destruction of civilization. In the novel, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, it it evident that fear can and will eventually tear down the walls of civilization. It all starts when a plane crash lands into the trees of a lost island. The survivors soon meet up one by one along the shore of the island, and it is noteworthy that they are all boys, from the age range of six to twelve years. At once each boy develops their own characteristics with Ralph as their leader, Piggy being the brainiac, Jack the hunter, and many other “littluns” and “bigguns”. However, all is not well for too long, as their stay on the island continues, the boys become more savage-like, due to their fears. The different terrors these boys encounter lead to despicable actions, including two brutal murders. William Golding shows that fear, of all kinds, can lead to the destruction of civilization.
“The thing is - fear can’t hurt you anymore than a dream.”(Golding, 116). Ralph’s point of view of the hazardous emotion is declared within the quote. Ralph is the protagonist derived from William Golding’s esteemed bestseller, Lord of the Flies. In the renowned novel written by Golding, young boys in a plane have crashed and descended upon an uninhabited island with more than sufficient vegetation. On the first chapter of the fictional writing, many of the boys are very enthusiastic and exhilarated about being on an island without any parental supervision. At first, order and tranquility were established by the children and there was more civilization on the island compared to savagery. However, as the novel advanced, the readers could identify the kids were suffering from the persistent terror on the island

Fear conjures rumors among people and strikes a feeling of insecurity. It also sparks a sudden desire for safety. Unfortunately, the only thing that man should fear is the cruelty of man. Golding uses the symbols of the beast, the fire, and the dead pilot to represent that human nature is the source of all defects in society.
The boys in the book, The Lord of the Flies, are controlled by their fear of the beast. This fear is not of the beast itself, but of the unknown. It comes from not knowing whether or not a beast exists.
