The island is burning, fear and flames fill the eyes of the littleluns, gray smoke and crispy ashes fill the gloomy sky. Tree after tree is burning due to the malicious acts of Jack and his makeshift society. What was once a cordial and civilized group, is now a pack of wild animals. “When you put those together, you get a volatile mix that creates an inability to govern your own behavior…. You’re not really aware of your own thought processes…. People who are in this state don’t think of long term consequences” ( Adelmann 2). In The Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, Jack craves for power and in order to get that he must kill Ralph for it; he burns the island in order to find him. Many factors such as fear and the hunger for power cause the boys to act like chaotic savages; it changes the way they act entirely and makes them commit crimes that can potentially harm oneself and others. Therefore, this mindset deteriorates the boys’ confidence of getting rescued and is the main reason why this civilization diminishes. …show more content…

Fear shuts the doors to opportunity and causes people to commit acts that they wouldn’t normally do. Fear controls human acts and behavior because it manipulates and changes our perspective. It also caused the death of Simon and Piggy because it made the boys act like savages. In the book many of the boys fear Jack because he is extremely greedy and imperious. Jack seems to think that he can get away with almost everything because he is the “better” person or leader. On the inside Jack is trembling with fear; he uses the idea of hunting pigs as a way to escape. It is impossible to avoid fear, you can only overcome it. Also, the boys are scared of this so called “ Beastie” even though it is only a figment of their imagination.
