Mankind is ruled by fear. It drives us to do what we do, no matter how small of a decision. It is through fear that we have survived and thrived, but for some it is the reason that they fail. Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart demonstrates this through repeated use of the motif of fear. Okonkwo, the story’s protagonist, is seen as a brave and fearless warrior throughout Umuofia. However, throughout the novel we can see Okonkwo as he is- a weakling. He lives his life in fear of appearing weak like his father before him.
