FedEx Corporation provides customers and businesses worldwide with a broad portfolio of transportation, e-commerce, and business services. FedEx was founded in 1971. Headquarters is currently located in Memphis, Tennessee. There are currently more than 340,000 employees working throughout FedEx Corporation. FedEx Corporation is the parent company of operation divisions, currently known as FedEx Express, FedEx Ground, FedEx Office, FedEx Freight, and FedEx Services. Even though all of the listed companies are managed cooperatively under the FedEx brand name, they operate independently from one another. Company Overview History In 1965, Yale University undergraduate Fredrick W. Smith wrote a term paper that laid out the logistical challenges facing pioneering firms in the information technology industry. Smith explained in his term paper how companies using airfreight shippers relied on passenger route systems, but those didn’t make since. He proposed a system specifically designed to accommodate time sensitive shipments. His teacher didn’t find anything special about his term paper, so he received just an average grade. In August 1971, Smith bought controlling interest in Arkansas Aviation Sales located in Little Rock, Arkansas. While operating his new firm, he saw firsthand how difficult it was to get packages and other airfreight delivered within one or two days.
