Most couples do not have any problem conceiving a child. In fact, it is estimated that 81 percent of couples will conceive a child within six months of having unprotected sex. Ninety-two percent of couples will conceive within six months.

Age

A woman is most fertile during her late 20s. Once a woman reaches her 30s, her fertility starts to decline. A woman's fertility rapidly declines after the age of 35. A man's fertility also decreases as he ages. However, a woman experiences a more rapid decline in fertility. A woman is also more likely to have a miscarriage after the age of 35.

Environmental Causes

Polycystic ovarian syndrome is one of the condition that can cause ovulation problems. Primary ovarian insufficiency, which is also known as early menopause, can cause infertility. It occurs when a woman's ovaries stop working before the age of 40.

Tumors, eating disorders and excessive exercise can trigger a hormone imbalance. In many cases, fertility can be restored by properly balancing the hormones.

Health Issues

There are a number of health issues that can make it difficult for both men and women to conceive. Diabetes, thyroid problems, obesity and kidney disease can play a role in male and female infertility. Genetics can also play a role. Some cases of infertility can be attributed to genetic disease.

Cancer Treatments

Chemotherapy, radiation and other cancer treatments can reduce sperm quantity and quality. These treatments can also impair female infertility. A woman's chance of becoming infertile after a cancer treatment is even greater if she is receiving treatment for cancer of the reproductive organs.
