Feminism is the public support for or recommendation of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men. In a more simple way of stating it, women rights equivalent to those of men. Before suffrage begun, women were strictly to act as women should, or what they were expected to act like. They were expected to take care of the children, cook, and clean. Not only were they supposed to do house work, but they also couldn’t vote or own any property. On August 26th, 1920, after 72 long-lasting years of fighting, and prolonged anticipation, women finally won their rights to be treated equally. One Journalist and Women’s Rights Activist named Gloria Steinem was born on March 25th, 1934, right after women were granted their rights. She became a freelance writer after college and grew more and more engaged in the women’s movement and feminism (Biography). She had and still has a strong outlook on the topic of feminism. Her strong opinion of how women should be treated, lead her to writing a book called “Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions”. In this book Gloria shares her perspective of life as a feminist and her experiences. She shares stories such as the one when she went undercover as a Playboy Bunny to see how these women in her position were treated. In the end, it turned out not to be as glamorous as sought out to be. The women worked in terrible conditions. Obviously, women’s freedom, rights and equality has already been won. Since August 26, 1920 to today’s day, it has been 94 long years. It’s been almost a whole century since women have had the same rights as men do.
Another feminist and author is Betty Friedan. She wrote a book called “The Feminine Mystique”. This book starts off bluntly stating that housewives from the 1950’s and the 1960’s were very sad with their roles of being housewives. This was during the time of WWII when young women were marrying at juvenile ages and not doing what they had wished to do. Friedan called it "the problem
