The title of a book is the first thing the reader sees when they pick it up. It serves as a first taste of what to expect in the book they are spending their time reading. In the play Fences by August Wilson, the title reflects the issues faced by the various characters and the figurative or sometimes literal fence that divides them all. Troy Maxson, the main character, is working on building a fence in front of his house to serve as a divider for their property. He struggles to form strong relationships with his sons and in some cases his wife Rose, causing a fence to form in between them. A fence develops throughout the play for Troy and Rose, Troy and his family, and among him and death itself. Troy is a “large man” (1) who likes to maintain the man of the house archetype. Much like his size, his personality is the same, which doesn’t match up with his wife Roses’. There are many times when they get into heated arguments leading to additional posts to be put up on the figurative fence between them. Part of the reason it takes the entirety of the play to be built is because Troy has been ignoring its construction. He builds the wall between himself and Cory by not having a perfect relationship with him from the start and for not being around to work on the fence. Cory alludes to the fact that Troy, "don't never do nothing, but go down to Taylors’" (29). Knowing what Troy has been doing with Alberta this whole time, every time he goes “down to Taylors’”(29) he is seeing his mistress Alberta. Troy neglecting to build the fence represents his neglect for his family. He forced himself to fence himself in and his family out, causing despair for Cory, Lyon, and Rose. Although it may have been a bad thing to do to your own family, it was effective for Troy to gradually become independant from the rest of his family
