In today’s America it is becoming harder and harder to know what is truth and what is fiction. The best way to have a complete understanding is to look at the facts and the statistics about whatever you want to know more about. For example when people look at Islam there are numerous misconceptions that people hold with or without knowing it.
For instance one of the many misconceptions that people hold about people who follow the religion of Islam is the myth of the seventy-two virgins. This myth goes on to state that if you commit suicide in the name of Allah you will be rewarded seventy-two virgins. Although the Quran does indeed speaks of virgins it doesn't necessarily say “virgins”, it clearly states that they've never been touched: “Untouched
While my fiction and nonfiction resources have similar themes, they also have uniquely different themes. One of the main themes in the fiction resource is justice. Even though Rusty and Andrew have to undergo many hardships in order to get enough evidence to expose Mean Man Myers for what he did and is still doing, they still kept going. They knew that it was the right thing to do and that in the end, it would be worth it because their hard work would pay off by exposing Mean Man Myers for his crimes. On the other hand, one of the main themes of the nonfiction resource is that it is informative. It explains how some people abuse animals and therefore the effects it has on those people, and the animal that is being abused. But also as well actually
Islam, a religion of people submitting to one God, seeking peace and a way of life without sin, is always misunderstood throughout the world. What some consider act of bigotry, others believe it to be the lack of education and wrong portrayal of events in media; however, one cannot not justify the so little knowledge that America and Americans have about Islam and Muslims. Historically there are have been myths, many attacks on Islam and much confusion between Islam as a religion and Middle Easter culture that is always associated with it. This paper is meant to dispel, or rather educate about the big issues that plague people’s minds with false ideas and this will only be touching the surface.
Vampire stories have universal themes that provide the backbone for every dark tale. The unholy essence that any vampire story provides sets the stage for the message that the Church is the way of life and will save you from creatures of evil. From in class readings, we can see all the major religious themes of the classic vampire story. The common religious theme is the abscess of light is the absence of holiness and is the path to eternal damnation. Darkness is the prime universal fear of humanity mostly because we, as a species, are not nocturnal creatures; therefore, we have developed a fear of the predator filled darkness of night. Using figurative descriptions of darkness as the enemy, the Church preaches the way of the light. The
These stories become the shadows on the wall that are cast by the flame, and the media has become the fire that projects the shadows on the wall. How do we know the story's we read or see are real? We do not always get the full story which causes people to believe and fear the world based on these stories. For example, after the devastating attacks 9/11, people seem to have a stereotypical insight on Muslims, assuming they we all terrorist. This is because we all were exposed to what the media told us. We catch ourselves being bias and stereotyping the world based on what we know through what we are being told. In reality, 9/11 was devastating, but not all Muslims are the same. The exposure to media has come a long way since 9/11. Therefore, our minds are being exposed to more insight on how people and the world
Fiction novel’s shows us the views and perspective others. This type of literature help us gain a more broader perspective and can teach us more about our society. The idea of banning fictional novels is a very foolish idea. These novels do more good than they do harm and are beneficial for our curriculum and learning. Taking away this literature will not benefit our learning and will only harm our learning. “Literature is a luxury; fiction is a necessity.’’ said G.K. Chesterton.
“In nineteen minutes, you can stop the world, or you can just jump off it. In nineteen minutes, you can revenge” (Picoult). Those words are of the opening lines of Jodi Picoult’s best seller, Nineteen Minutes. Although this novel is heart wrenching, and cuts into the ‘grays’ of school shootings, it is anything but original. Lead character, Peter Houghton, is an almost perfect profile replication of 1999’s Columbine shooters, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris. A simple personaltiy analysis will reveal that both Peter and Columbine Shooters suffer from parental neglect, the violent virtual world, ruthless peers, as well as easy access to weapons.
Both the nonfiction and the fiction resource have a significant conflict. The author made the shark attack so painful and down to the last detail about how the attack affected the main character in the “I Survived” book, but in the article the author wrote it where the reader knew that it was bad but how it happened such as the cause of it. One conflict for the fiction resource is to have that feeling someone or something is watching you or is around you. “A feeling of terror came over ten-year-old Chet Roscow, a chill deep down in his bones. He had been swimming in the matawan creek by himself. But he had the idea that someone-or something was watching him.” The other conflict for the fiction resource is in combat with a shark. “And then he
In his devotional on January 10, 2017, President of BYU Kevin J. Worthen discussed the idea of living in a “post-truth world.” He reflects on the misdirection of information on the internet, noting that there is an overabundance that leads to confusion amongst people. He says, “Many do not know how to determine the accuracy or the truthfulness of new information. Some deal with the matter by looking for reinforcement of their own preexisting, and sometimes ill-informed, notions… Others go to the opposite extreme, finding any piece of information that disrupts their prior views as sufficient reason to throw aside, without further inquiry, truths that have provided sure guidance to them and others in the past.” President Worthen comments address what has become known as fake news and the dangers of biased information.
Well, we will be happy to go down the list and tally all the courageous things Barack
The truth: what is the truth? The rhetorical question has haunted many for decades from your average folk to the almighty intellect who tries to perceive things in a different light. The desire to know what is true is something everyone relates to. However, there do exist those few cases where a person choses to be oblivious because sometimes not knowing is better than facing the consequences of what those around you or you have done. These personal choices affect how history is told. History by definition is, “acts, ideas, or events that will or can shape the course of the future; immediate but significant happenings” (History, 2015). It is a very delicate subject that can be easily manipulated to benefit the more powerful while being aided
In today’s 21st century of life, there are millions and millions of books, short stories, and poems. Authors have been scripting out different tales since before the 1st century. Therefore giving one plenty of options when it comes to not only reading, but analyzing, evaluating, and even interpreting the literature standpoint that you receive from picking up a good book. The three themes from the book How to Read Literature Like a Professor, written by Thomas C. Foster, can be applied to pieces of literature such as Frank Stockton’s “The Lady or the Tiger?”, Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery”, and “The Minister’s Black Veil” by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Several themes in How to Read Literature Like a Professor like “Nice to Eat You: Acts of Vampires,” “Now Where Have I Seen Her Before?,” and “Is That a Symbol?” play into the famous short stories mentioned above. “The Acts of Vampires” is a theme that deals with “The Lady, or the Tiger?” and how the corrupt older male strips away the females virtues and youth. “Now Where Have I Seen Her Before?” deals with the short story “The Lottery” and how every story comes from another story, and nothing is original because it is always a spin off of another book. Lastly, “Is That a Symbol?” deals with “The Minister’s Black Veil” and how symbolic the minister’s black veil really is.
Back then there were many diverse ideas about religion. The way people had viewed god back then was quite interesting . As time passed, philosophies changed .Beliefs and views on god started to transition. It all began with god and how he had to be worshiped. Then, it started to transition to the belief that god still existed but was no longer here and that he had created and left laws of nature. Lastly, the people were able to connect with god in a spiritual way through nature. Throughout the major literary philosophies in the United States, one can see how the movement from once “worshiping” god slowly transitions to connecting with “god” in a different way.
In the genre of fiction there are two categories Literary fiction and Commercial fiction.Literary fiction contains complex characters, philosophical messages and endings are unsettling or unresolved. The other category Commercial fiction is the complete opposite of Literary fiction because the characters are almost always protagonists or villains, the endings have closure and the theme is straight forward. In the short story “The Destructors” by Graham Greene the theme is that seeing others do better than yourself will make you want to tear them down. This short story can be categorized into the Drama category because when the gang is still destroying the house Mr.Thomas comes home early the gang devises a plan to trap him in his own loo.The short story is different from others because it’s about tearing down a house that has survived the destruction of World War II.The story begins when the gang has a meeting to talk about their operations and that’s when T comes and tells the gang that Mr.Thomas showed him his house and he will be leaving on holiday break so they should try to break in and destroy the home.He tells them that he found a way into the house without making much noise. All of them agree that destroying the house is the way to go by voting for it then T gives everyone orders to get tools in order to make destroying the house a lot easier. As they are close to finishing the home Mr.Thomas unexpectedly comes home early and the gang scrambles to come up with a plan to
Good post on this week. I chose the character, too. I don’t know exactly related to their suffering or pain due to, I didn’t see that person around me. I can guess you can understand about them. Thanks for your dedication. American literature has diversity genres; especially Regionalism is a blossomed, international, or global writer’s bends American culture through a foreign perspective. Continue writing a multi-ethnic mined a rich vein, and each ethnic literature matures, it creates its own traditions. Creative nonfiction and memoir flourished. The genre of the short story has gained luster, and short story has taken source. A new generation of playwrights continues the tradition of the United States to explore current social
Fictional works of art are something that is very popular in our culture and draw a large audience, but why is that when the audience knows that what they are watching is solely a made up story? The Paradox of Fiction highlights the problem of experiencing emotions about fictional stories. I think what causes the most questioning is that the audience knows it is purely fictional and in no way real, but we still feel particularly strong emotions nonetheless. The emotions experienced are in fact genuine to the viewer, although they are not genuine in a sense of being how one might respond if they were actually placed in the situation of the characters. I believe that most people use fictional stories to escape their daily lives and focus on something that they can relate to that doesn’t actually affect their life.
