There are many aspects to teaching and as a teacher it is necessary to understand the most important aspects of teaching and how they should be incorporated into the classroom. A teacher’s most important job is not to teach specific material but to build relationships with the students and ensure they feel safe and cared for. Once the teacher is able to ensure this then they should focus on teaching, however teaching is more than listing off facts and sharing information with the students. As teachers it is essential we try to engage our students. There are many ways to engage students and each teacher as a specific way they get their classroom involved in learning. During my field experience I have learned the importance of being able to engage students and I have seen what a classroom looks like when students are not engaged. My field experience has helped to reflect on student engagement and how I would place the experience in my philosophy of education.
In my field experience sadly, I have not seen a lot of student engagement. The students do not actively participate in class and most of the time they appear to be disinterested in what their teacher is saying. In this classroom I see many of the students staring off into to space and not paying attention. When the students do this instead of trying to engage and involve her students my cooperating teacher gets on to them. I understand students should be respectful and pay attention to their teacher but as a history major a fully aware history can appear to be boring if the information is not presented properly. When all a teacher does is read directly from the book with little class discussion and interaction it makes it hard for the students to become engaged. When students are not fully engaged in the class it makes it difficult for them to absorb all the information the teacher is presenting to them. The more students are engaged the more they are able to learn.
My observations has taught me the importance of engaging students. I am now able to recognize when a student is not engaged. They seem distracted and are not paying attention to what the teacher is saying. Whereas an engaged student is alert, discussing the material, and asking questions
Engaged learning, within a highly supportive environment, enables our students to develop strong communication skills, excel within collaborative settings, effectively address complex problems with innovative solutions, and lead with integrity and compassion throughout their lives and careers in a diverse and rapidly changing world.
They can also help motivate student’s desire to learn by being engaged with both the content and students themselves.
"To create student engagement, the teacher must succeed in managing both discipline and instruction. If kids are goofing off, you won't get much engagement."
Teachers should encourage students to get involved and participate in class. Making a student feel important and showing that their opinions matter can have a positive effect on a student and make them want to do better in school. Teachers need to catch the student’s attentions and get them engaged in the material so that they do not have time to disrupt class. “Setting expectations and making reasonable demands encourages students to participate, but sometimes students need an extra push in the right direction.” Parents need to be the ones that give that extra push to their children.
Student engagement is one of the most important things in school. Student engagement is an example. The students would have more time to do homework and get it done instead of not turning it in. Kids would also be more involved in class and in activities going on throughout the school. It is a big factoring debate on (Global Post) and talks about the more in student engagement. This shows what can be done to fix the problem
What effect did your teaching strategies have in terms of promoting student learning and keeping your students meaningfully engaged? (APS 5.A–C)
Active engagement occurs in the classroom when a teacher makes the connection between teaching and learning through pedagogy. The choice of pedagogy must see fit with the content of the lesson which in return will assist the teacher in constructing a more meaningful and supportive learning environment where students’ are more willing to participate and be actively engaged. The most important skill in pedagogies is relating the learning experience to real world situations in which students’ can relate too (Churchill et al., 2011).
Engaged time is the amount of time that students are actively involved and participating in school instruction. In other words, engaged time is when students are in the process of learning. It is common for some students espically special needs students to be less actively engaged in class time instruction. If one increases the engaged time then the learning increases as well. One way for engaged time to increase is for the teacher to use full use of scheduled instructional time. There is time waisted when you add in housekeeping chores or get off topic. Another way engaged time can be increased is to emphasize instruction rather than independent practice. Teacher-led activities lead to a higher engagement rates. A third way engaged time can
The overreaching goal of engagement during the instructional process is to achieve learning (J.J Keller & Associates, n.d.). Learning is the process by which a new skillset or information is acquired through review, practical exercise, and experience to name a few producing understanding or skillfulness (Merriam-Webster, n.d.). In an effort to facilitate learning during engagement of the adult learner, considerations should be applied and adjusted if needed to the presentation of the material which contributes to optimal learning. Optimal learning for the adult provides for engagement and allows retention of knowledge to transpire which is impacted by the training approach of the instructor (Kelly, 2006). The instructor’s teaching
No matter what, a routine is important within the classroom, but outside of the basic routine, it’s important to shake things up to provide different activities to keep the students’ attention. Some students work better within groups, and others on their own, so it is very important to make sure a teacher has a balance of that. This will also help strengthen the students’ skills by working on both of these. An example of engagement could be based on a kindergarten classroom. As they’re developing and reaching certain developmental milestones, listening and sitting still is difficult for them. Kindergarteners weren’t made to sit in a chair all day and be silent, movement and talking are a huge part of the various developmental milestones they surpass. Having activities that get the kids up and moving can be very beneficial to not only them but the teacher as well because it keeps the students
By way of contrast, a more inclusive model of engagement was postulated by Appleton (2006) and Christenson et al. (2008) recently. In this model, engagement is an umbrella term for students’ academic, behavioral, cognitive, and psychological engagement respectively. The behaviors, unlike the two previous models, include academic (e.g., time on task, credits earned, and homework completion)2 and behavioral (e.g., attendance, class participation, and extracurricular participation)2 dimensions. This four- components model, which we will adopt in this study, is particularly distinct from the two former ones since it gives priority to the cognitive and psychological aspects of engagement. Appleton, Christenson et al. (2006) believe that these
Every teacher encounters the challenge of getting students engaged in work in the classroom. While some students enthusiastically walk into a classroom each day, others need motivation and inspiration to focus in school. This issue is significant for school leaders because the role of the school is to provide a place for students to engage and interact with knowledge. If students are not
In the context of this course purposeful engagement means actually inter acting and not just showing up to class. Anyone can show up to class and do the work most teachers accept that but to build interactions with other students a person has to interact. Personally I have engaged by doing the scavenger hunt that was given to us at the beginning of the semester. I walked from one end of the campus to the other learning where some of the buildings were and having to talk to personnel to figure out some of the questions. This also involved having to get help from other students when I could not figure out some of the answers on my own.
Engaging students in the classroom can be a difficult task. Understanding the process of how students learn can help a teacher adapt the lesson to meet the needs of all students. I will encounter students that are not intrinsically motivated so I will need to find different ways to motivate each and every student. Understanding how my students learn can provide me with insights as to how to help each student learn which will minimize classroom management problems.
students are composed of many diverse groups of people together, which is a problem for teachers when providing lessons. However, engagement is best method or way for people to acquire knowledge. In schools, engagement is an important way that students acquire their education. When students and teachers are highly engaged in school, teachers are able to help students improve their learning. In the article "Student Engagement", the author pointed out that highly engagement between teachers and students help to reduce dropout rates and increased levels of student success. Also, the author believes it motivates the students keeping them interested in school and their education. (Sadker, M) The action of engagement it benefits both students and teachers. From the schools, teachers and educators point of view, it is important for teachers to engage students in the learning process, because it helps teachers to know and make sure the students are learning. In the "Teachers Engagement" article, the author explain the idea of teachers engage students in learning help students motivated and interested in school. Also, in the article, the author pointed out that most students are do not know purpose why they are in school, and teachers by engaging the students in school help students realize the purpose of education. (Kennedy, C) With those reasons, it shows that engagement it important for students and teachers in
