When my step mother and I first walked into the VFW we were automatically surrounded by Filipino-American people. The party that I am attending is called an International/ Fil-Am Club party and was the Saturday before father’s day. According to Melcar they have these parties monthly for different occasions. I was excited to come not only to spend time with my stepmother and my father, but I was also excited to learn more about her culture. When we walked in I saw many small groups sitting at long tables laughing and talking with each other in a different language that I could not understand. It was around six o’clock and I was extremely hungry. The whole gymnasium smelt amazing and I made a V-line for the food area shortly after we found our seats. The tables were full of food that I have never seen before and some that I was kind of familiar with. They were very colorful, vibrant, and interesting food. Some I had seen Melcar make before, like the spring rolls for example. I have watched her take all the ingredients from scratch and mush them together with her bare hands very tightly. They form into tight perfect little rolls and she fries them in bubbling hot oil. I filled my plate full, because I was familiar with them and knew what was in them. Mel came up behind me and I started asking her about the other food. She did her best to explain to me what they were and many of them I had never heard of before. We laughed as I poked the octopus with a …show more content…
I am thankful for this assignment not only because it helped me grow as an individual, but helped me grow closer to my stepmother by learning about her culture and heritage. I think it meant a lot to her that I chose to do this paper on her culture. When we left, she hugged me and she thanked me as we walked to the car. I hugged her and thanked her back for allowing me the

Gerontological nurses working in the Hmong community's to have a cross-cultural understanding to understand the cultural meaning and rituals process of Hmong Americans to build their practice. American culture is a nontraditional and individualism culture. Americans are open to new principles, ideas, and practices. Many Americans are also more concerned about themselves and their immediate family and friends. Music and television exhibit aspects of both the nontraditional and individualism culture. The focus of American culture is technology, consumers, capitalism, sports, and politics. Almost everything in America revolves around technology, such as cell phones, computers, TV, social media, video games, etc. Money seems to play a major role. Wealth is an achievement everyone wants to have, living the American dream is getting rich. Advertisements constantly convince consumers to buy products (even products they don’t necessarily

Above all, I would like to dedicate this to my mother, Maria Mojica, because she has shaped me to become the individual I am today. Moreover, I am truly appreciative for everything she has done in regards to my education due to the fact that she was my motivation towards becoming the best version of myself as possible. Also, my mother has taught me how to become responsible, respectful, and sincere. Since she has involved herself in my education, I have been able to succeed and continue attempting to improve to show her that I am thankful for everything she has done. In addition, her extremity of dedication towards education was beneficial due to the fact that it served as motivation to strive for success. Furthermore, my mother has endeavored
Based upon this culture there are many barriers the Asian American must overcome in order to receive assistance from the mental health counselors. These people are very proud and believe that whether good or bad happens it affects the entire family. Primary elections are elections held previous to a Presidential election to decide upon the presidential candidate from the two main parties. These are held in each state, each of which then goes on to sponsor the winning candidate of their primary at the national convention, where the party’s presidential candidate is announced. This method of choosing a candidate came about due to the McGovem/Fraser Commission of 1968 (where Mayor Daley refused McGovem the chance to run as he was too liberal). It replaced the old system of decisions being made in ‘smoke filled rooms’ where party bosses were all powerful and made the decision.

Vietnamese culture is intricate, diverse and depicts something of a history lesson. The nation's labyrinthine, teeming trading quarters are rich in indigenous crafts and reflect centuries old mercantile influences. Ancient temples display distinctly Chinese influences in the north and Hindu origins in the south. Meanwhile the broad, tree lined boulevards and grand state buildings that grace the capital date from the French colonial period. And it's impossible to forget Vietnam's pivotal position close to the epicentre of East Asian power and prosperity, for its cities' skylines which are defined by clusters of glass, steel corporate headquarters and sleek luxury hotels. The Vietnamese society has a strong system of values and ethics that define
In the discussion of “A Modest Proposal” the author, Jonathan Swift, uses sarcasm and verbal irony in order to criticizes the English and Irish parliaments. The use of verbal irony gave the criticisms a humorous twist and translated the idea more effortlessly to many readers; however, for some the use of verbal irony created a complicated and traumatizing proposal. To many readers Jonathan Swift’s morals and principles in life are questionable or corrupted, for the proposal of consumption of infant’s flesh. On the other hand, others readers see Swift having a very humorous and relaxing moral; however, his criticisms are still illustrated very clearly. Correspondingly, Swift can be seen as a brilliant writer with a twisted sense of humor and

Before discussing Vietnamese culture, a brief description of the country’s geography and recent history should be considered. The country of Vietnam is nestled on the eastern coast of Southeast Asia. The western edge of Vietnam is abutted by Cambodia and Laos and China lines the north. The geography of Vietnam is diverse with biospheres, subsuming jungles, mountains, forests, and coastal flatland. When considering the patterns of Vietnamese immigration, the ongoing conflict between North and South Vietnam is of paramount impact. During U.S. involvement from 1950-1975, over 150,000 Vietnamese refugees fled to the U.S.; currently, the poor living conditions in Vietnam still provide an impetus that has resulted in over 1.5 million Vietnamese
Many people do notice at first, but I am half Asian. I practice both the American and Asian cultures. My mother is Khmer and my dad is white. Khmer people come from Cambodia which is a small part of Asia. There are many differences between american and cambodian cultures, here are some of them.
Who am I? Having been born in the Philippines and arriving in the U.S. at only 9 months old, I didn’t really know much about the diverse world around me. Now, as I have matured being the young adolescent I have grown up to be today, things have started to clear up for me. I’m now beginning to understand the different cultures around me. The Filipino culture, the culture I was born into and most identify with, is very outgoing and hospitable. I can also use these adjectives to describe the Filipino people. Whichever island you visit, whether it be Boracay or Palawan, it is certain that you will discover unique surprises at every corner.
At first, I thought who am I going to thank? By the end of the day, I realized how tremendously blessed I really am. I don’t mean that lightheartedly. There truly isn’t a person in my life I don’t owe a thank you too. However, I’ll spare you thirty pages of responses. While getting my degree I, just like many students, have come across many hardships. Some that almost done me in. Some that I just needed a little help along the way. I choose to thank the ones that helped a little along the way. (Mostly because, I didn’t want to bore you)
