Every October, we celebrate Filipino American History Month. In honor of this wonderful month long celebration, Hollywood News Source would be doing a string of festive posts for the next four weeks. We will have giveaways, guest posts, discussions, and book recommendations. Our main goal is to feature a variety of Filipino authors and their books and to showcase the excellency of Filipino Americans. For the kickoff of this celebration, we are recommending a collection of books by Filipino authors which ranges from Middle Grade, Young Adult to Adult. Most of the titles in this list are starring by Filipino characters while some features non-Filipinos but are written by Filipino authors. Once again, Filipino American History Month aims to
At birth, the Hmong view their newborns as a gift and extremely special. At birth, it is called “Mus Thawj thiab, “go become again” or more simple, “reincarnation,” is a traditional Hmong belief (Bankston 2000). When a child is born, they are automatically seen as a gift and reborn as a reincarnated soul. Though, if a child dies after three days of living there are “no funeral ceremonies…since the child did not have a soul yet” (Bankston 2000). The Hmong believe if the child lives past three days, their soul is present though if they die, the infant never had a soul to begin with. If the child lives past day three, then a shaman is brought in and he “evokes a soul to be be reincarnated in the baby’s body” (Bankston 2000). This is considered
Native Americans, or Indians, as they were mistakenly called, have been the “pathetic footnotes to the main course of American history” (Axtell 981). But James Axtell, the author of Colonial America without the Indians: Counterfactual Reflections, would beg to differ. He says that instead, Indians played a key role in making America great. James Murray gives another term to describe America’s greatness: America’s “exceptionalism.” Throughout his article Axtell makes many points as to why Indians played a vital role in “American Exceptionalism”. He even says that America wouldn’t have been colonized nearly as soon if the Indians were gone, because Columbus would know he was not in the Indies and move on. So because they simply existed in the first place, Axtell says they were significant in the history of our country. Furthermore, he says Indians specifically played a vital role in the exceptionality of America’s early economy, culture, and historical events and places.
The Filipino and Japanese immigrant to the United States in the 19th century. There are different push and pull factor that brought these ethnic group out of their country and move to the united states. The main reason that these ethnic group move out their country was searching for the “American Dream” which give them the opportunity for a better life, education, and wealth. Both Filipino and Japanese was the first group that came to Hawaii to work during the popularity production of sugar and agricultural in the mainland. They face discrimination and low-wages job with no benefits. However, they brought their own culture and skill to the United States which make difficult for them to adapt into the American culture. Although the Filipino and Japanese immigrant have the same common experiences coming to the unites states. There are some highlight similarities and difference between these two ethic.
I will start off by saying that I am writing about different aspects of Hawaiian culture. The first 2 aspects of the Hawaiian culture that I will be educating you about is the overall culture of the state and also, a little history on Hawaii. The state of Hawaii is valued to be very beautiful and to have great views of the vast landscape. The flower lei represents a welcome home gift from the islanders. It is there way of saying welcome you made it! You should never take it off in public, which is considered rude and dishonorable. There is also expert canoe builders and non-tool navigators. They know how to construct a sturdy boat to move resources or people. The non-tool navigators know the lay of the land. Using only the sun, the moon, and
To bring to the light the many reasons that the Americans decided to annex the Philippines and how they were mostly all connected to the main reason. This main reason being that they had an overriding fear about the decline in American masculinity.
Hi! I know a short list, crossing my fingers this would expand more in the near future. I’d love to support more Filipino authors especially one’s that write diverse books.
The debate on Puerto Rican Identity is a hot bed of controversy, especially in today’s society where American colonialism dominates most of the island’s governmental and economic policies. The country wrestles with the strong influence of its present day colonizers, while it adamantly tries to retain aspects of the legacy of Spanish colonialism. Despite America’s presence, Puerto Ricans maintain what is arguably their own cultural identity which seems largely based on the influence of Spain mixed with customs that might have developed locally.
The irony of the 1898 Spanish-American war was that Americans fought partly to aid Cubans in the fight for Cuban sovereignty, and the United States ended up colonizing some territories they won from Spain, like the Philippines. Despite America’s previous claims of only supporting independence and democracy, the United States became an imperialist power and colonized the Philippines (Introduction to the Spanish-American war and the Filipino insurgency in the assignment sheet). This led to a Filipino insurgency, led by discontent Filipinos, who fought American troops through guerrilla warfare (Conlin 545). Conlin states that many Americans died fighting against a “popular
The history of Immigration has been around since the 19th century, in between the 1880’s and 1920. From only between that time line our population has increased substantially. The U.S is the most common country to migrate to, making the U.S multicultural. There are immigrants who may have an issue within their country or economy, leading them to another country for their own sake. Other immigrants may also be migrating to other countries to escape poverty and better their wealth or life. Immigrants are able to spread their culture and could also help the country industrialize with their ideas or have a better understanding of the culture. Therefore ur country wouldn’t have any of these ideas without the spread of ideas and even today
One hundred years ago, in 1898, the United States was fighting the Spanish-American War. The victory over Spain made the United States a colonial power. The Spanish colonies of Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines, as well as the formerly independent nation of Hawaii, became American possessions.
A young boy named Miguel sits on the couch of a stranger. He sits reminiscing about his life in Mexico. Just a few weeks ago, Miguel and his family took the drastic decision of immigrating to the United States. A decision made not because the family wanted to but because of necessity. The family was witnessing how prosperity in their home country was no longer an expectation or even a reasonable goal. With the family's hand forced, they took a long dangerous journey to the United States. It's been a few weeks and the family is trying to cope. The family doesn't know anyone or the language spoken. Stuck in a foreign state miles and miles from home they can only hope for the best. Will this foreign state known as America give them the opportunities they yearn for so much?
In the 1990s, there were more than 7 million Asian Americans in the United States of America. Bureau of the Census has published that there is a total of 3,726,400 Asians, which includes Pacific Isalnders, which is represented to about 1.6 percent of the population. Chinses Americans were the first Asian to be migrated in the United States.
The Filipinos' existence in the United States is way beyond the word “illegal” nor “alien.” However, one can rarely enter into a discussion about Filipino immigrants without hearing the term "illegal alien." As a Filipino immigrant who legally migrated to the United States, I think such term is outright offensive and dehumanizing, regardless of its “political correctness.” Furthermore, as a Filipino-American living in this country, I feel it is my responsibility to correct such term; however, before I can correct such misconception about my fellow Filipinos, I needed to learn about our story and how the Filipino Immigration in America began. So I traced our history, and in my research, I focused solely on the first four waves of the Filipino

Today, Filipinos represent the 4th largest immigrant group in the United States by country of origin, after Mexico, India and China (Alchin, 2017). The Filipinos started immigrating to the United States for various reasons such as political and poverty. They were able to through trading ships and after the Spanish-American War. Once here, they faced prejudice and discrimination, including in our own state, Washington.
