Movie Reaction 5 “A Place At the Table”
“A place at the table” is a visually dynamic documentary highlighting the implications of food development and nutrition quality of the American People and the specific ways the congressional agenda has facilitated the continuance of American poverty (Silverbush & Jacobson, 2013). The documentary begins with young fifth-grade girl, Rosie, from Colbrant Colorado, who suffers often from hunger pangs. A tone that motivates the purpose for this documentary.
“A place at the table” (2013) poses hunger to be a silent epidemic, one that is culturally unacceptable to talk about, but prevalent everywhere. This is true whether you live in rural America, the south, or the inner-city. Although, 1-6 Americans do not have enough to eat or the fact over 50 million individuals are labeled as “food insecure”, it is not something readily seen or addressed in our country (Silverbush & Jacobson, 2013). Silverbush and Jacobson (2013) highlight the link between food insecurity and poverty, detailing how the cost of readily available processed foods is cheaper than fresh foods, which is the direct outcome of our farm policies and their subsidization laws. Moreover, this works to include the federal dollars that are going to major farms who specialize in ingredients that go into processed foods (Silverbush & Jacobson, 2013). Monies that are not extended to fresh grown produce, which stems from impoverished, small farms who are facing income struggles themselves (Silverbush & Jacobson, 2013). Similarly, this documentary clearly demonstrates how nutrition/hunger is not a Congressional priority. Lastly, this documentary ends with the recommendation to change federal policy toward monetary backing for processed foods, reeducation on the benefits of healthy foods, and assuring that nutritious foods are economically available (Silverbush & Jacobson,
