Film Analysis: My So Called Enemy

Based off Charles Webb’s 1963 novel by the same name, The Graduate is an American romantic comedy/drama released in the United States on December 21, 1967 starring Dustin Hoffman, Anne Bancroft, Katharine Ross, and William Daniels. The film was directed by Mike Nichols, produced by Lawrence Turman and the screenplay written by Buck Henry and Calder Willingham. The film was produced by Lawrence Turman/Mike Nichols productions starting in March of 1967. Mike Nichols has also directed other well known films such as Catch-22 (1970), Working Girl (1988), and more recently Closer (2004). The film was distributed by AVCO Embassy Pictures nationally and United Artists internationally. AVCO Embassy Pictures studio, founded by Joseph E. Levine, the films executive producer, also claims production/distribution for other hit films such as Godzilla, King of Monsters! (1956), The Fog (1980), and Prom Night (1980). The movie was well received due to its $104 million dollar box office opening tab. The score was produced by Dave Grusin and the songs written by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel.

The Frontline film Separate and Unequal discussed about creating a new school system; however, there are opposition by others who wants to maintain the current school system. If we look at the perspectives of the two groups, it is understandable in why there is support and opposition from the people of the city. The supporters of the new system wants a system that can provide better opportunities for their children without any violence. As the film claimed “the school was not teaching and were only babysitting the children”, which was likely a reason why there was a need for a new school system. Navigating the Different Responses to Conflict Conflict is an inevitable part of human life that produces a variety of responses that reflect the unique characteristics of an individual’s mindset and approach to the conflict. People exhibit a plethera of reactions when going through conflict, from composed conversations to ferocious protests. The manner in which someone chooses to deal with problems reflects their personality and attitude toward resolving conflicts. When you confront a problem calmly and with a positive way of thinking, you will be able to foster empathy and a sense of connection with others, while being able to express your viewpoint clearly. This will enable you to build strong and long-lasting relationships and settle conflicts without hurting you or anyone else.

The text, or more so the movie about the text, The Help by Kathryn Stockett, does a good job of portraying race, class and gender. During the setting of the book, many people looked at white Americans to be superior to the Black, African American race. With this being said, the successful white families hired in the African American women to cook, clean, and in most cases, take care of the children. They were known as the help. Throughout both the book and the movie, the African American women experienced many forms of gender, race and class inequality.

Analytical Thesis: Get Out is a psychological thriller that analyzes the racial issues in modern America through the use of visual rhetoric: such as film noir, symbolism and metaphors.

Film- Precious Knowledge Precious Knowledge is a documentary that takes place in Tucson, Arizona and focuses on how the Unified School district wants to completely ban the Mexican American Studies Program. In the film there were many scenes with examples of rhetorical appeal. I believe that the way the film was set up since the beginning had an impactful and direct emotional appeal on the audience. For instance, in the first scenes of the film we have the opportunity to get to know the main characters in a more intimate level.

In this documentary, director Kirby Dick sheds a bright light onto one of society’s most hushed-up subjects--rape. Specifically, rape on some of the most prestigious college campuses in the United States. Institutions such as University of Tulsa, Florida State University, Arizona State University, and Oklahoma State University are only a few of those under fire for their methods of handling sexual assault reports. Likewise, the film does not spare Ivy League universities such as Harvard and Yale, exposing their investigation track records right on screen. The documentary The Hunting Ground is very effective in bringing attention to the reality of sexual assault on even the most popular college campuses through personal interviews, statistics, and testimony from former college officials.

A meeting with all involved parties to discuss the issue is also another good way to resolve conflict. Everyone will have a chance to speak; this is a good opportunity to hear all sides of the story and gain a full understanding of the conflict.

Throughout this class, various discussions and blogs have been used to analyze the different elements of films such as theme, cinematic techniques and genre. It is time to bring all of these separate elements together in the analysis of one specific film, according to class text, “analyzing levels of meaning below the surface story can greatly enhance enjoyment as well as understanding of a film” (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014. p. 10.03). There are several different approaches to film analysis including formalist, auteurist, and generic or any combination thereof. Utilizing a genre theory lens, the 1956 film The Searchers will be analyzed addressing contextual information, story/plot, aesthetic choices, social/personal impact and how these areas come together to develop the film.

Part 1 - In American author's 2009 book, The Help, the primary thesis is the relationship between Black maids and white households in Jackson, Mississippi during the early 1960s. The story is really told from three perspectives, Aibileen and Minny are Black women, both maids, and Skeeter is the nickname of Eugenia Phelan, daughter of a prominent White family. Skeeter has just finished school and hopes to become a writer. In general, the relationship between the Black maids and the White employers is six sided: On one side we have the White employers who have three views: 1) Their personal and private beliefs that can range from extreme scorn and bias to kindness regarding race; 2) Their public persona that must have the "proper" attitude about Blacks and "the help," and 3) Their employer attitude, which is condescending and parental. The Black view also has three segments: 1) Their personal and private beliefs that usually range from understanding not all Whites are the same and an extreme love and empathy for the White children for whom they care; 2) The public persona that is deferential, polite, and stoic to their White bosses; and 3) Their attitude and view among the Black community, which usually separates the "poor and ignorant but rich" White souls from the Black view of family and common sense. All in all, the relationship is contentious, phony, and based on economic advantage.

The movie A Time to Kill is engrossed in the emotions that revolves around hatred, this hatred originates from racism in the south. It begins with the brutal rape of a young black girl, Tanya Hailey. The rape was committed by two rednecks in a pickup truck. Tonya’s father Carl Lee Hailey takes the law into his hands and lashes out by killing the rapist. Charged with two counts of murder, he is assigned the young and brilliant lawyer Jake Brigance, who still believes he is able to receive a fair trial. With the trial beginning, viewers get to see this hatred somehow rise to become more significant. Focusing on the relationship between Carl Lee and Jake Brigance, and its impact on the southern town. The producers of this movie tried to make the audience or the viewers understand how these people in the south struggle with this hatred of racism, facing segregation head on and its judicial system. A Time to Kill is based on the first novel by John Grisham. Directed by Joel Schumacher, with the strong performances from Samuel L. Jackson as Carl Lee Hailey, the avenging father, and Matthew McConaughey as Jake Brigance, the lawyer. This paper will be analyzing some clips and scenes from the movie, and discussing how every visual aspect of a film's language especially cinematography. For example, shots, sounds, settings, and movements can give the audience a clear sign of emotions, motive, and clues as to what the filmmaker feels and

Throughout the semester there were various aspects of communication that I felt applied to me. It was not, however, until the latter half of the semester that I experienced my greatest revelation regarding my abilities as a communicator. While studying the 12th chapter in the textbook, Interplay The Process of Interpersonal Communication, I learned
