THE FOG OF WAR We know that about 160 million people killed during the 20th century. Cold war, Cuban missile crisis and Vietnam War are the most important historic events which are included in this century. In this documentary, director Errol Morris interview with Robert McNamara who is the ex-secretary of defense under John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson administrations. McNamara tell the significant story from his perspective and director divides the film into eleven lesson according to McNamara’s life. Question is that am I agree that there is fog of war? Firstly I need to explain what is “fog of war”? McNamara explain like that “the fog of war’s means is that war is so complex it's beyond the ability of the human mind to comprehend…show more content…
And he gives an example “Agent Orange”. This is a kind of chemical which is used in Vietnam. A chemical that strips leaves off of trees. After the war, it is claimed that that was a toxic chemical and it killed many individuals soldiers and civilians exposed to it. Were those who issued the approval to use Agent Orange criminals? Were they committing a crime against humanity? As we look at the laws there is no rule which is said these chemicals are acceptable in war these chemicals are not. “Human beings must stop killing other human beings” this is the statement of wife of the Norman Morrison who was a Quaker. Of course he was opposed the war and he protest the war burned himself to death in front of the pentagon. How much evil must we do in order to do well? We have certain ideals, certain responsibilities. Recognize that at times you will have to engage in evil, but minimize it. Again I said that war is cruel and all politician try to save their country and their people and in this process they was ready to kill and destroy everything. In conclusion, there is a fog of war and war is complicated. Politicians are not always be the rational and they must be learn lesson from the past decisions. They must empathize with their enemy like Usa and Soviet not like the Usa and Vietnamese and that is the big lesson from McNamara “You can’t change human
