The Godfather employs a variety of narrative elements to tell the story of an Italian American family full of thugs and gangsters based in New York shortly after World War II. The first scene depicts a wedding of Vito Corleone’s daughter. This family gathering is a fantastic way to introduce many of the characters at the very start of the film, and to provide insight into some of these characters motivations as well. Vito is portrayed as a protagonist as he seems to be the person in charge in a room full of men asking him for favors. During this scene it also becomes apparent the different roles men and women play in the family, and this theme is further explored throughout the rest of the film.
Moving forward in the scene, we are also introduced to the other protagonist, Michael Corleone. As he arrives in his military uniform, Vito watches him through his

The attempted assassination of Vito is a catalyst to Michael killing a mob boss and a policeman in a small Italian restaurant. Michael feels he is leaving behind his old, military persona and is trading it in to become a criminal. Michael is viewed as a very round character throughout the film because of this transformation. This rising action leads to Michael being sent off to Sicily to where his father, Vito, was born. The change of setting is a very important element of the narrative to show that Michael wants to escape, at least temporarily, from where his life was leading to in America. The contrast of city streets and tall buildings to rolling fields and quaint homes emphasizes this switch of locale for Michael. More importantly, however, is even though Michael can have a fresh start with a new Sicilian wife, he cannot escape what he left behind. The car bomb intended for him causes Michael to realize that even the Sicilian countryside is not safe from crime, and his presence in Sicily is putting people in
The gangster genre within films in America has accomplished numerous positive criticisms and constant willing audiences due to containing outstanding spectacles and mind-blowing action. The Godfather, being second on the IMDb Top 250 Movies, has set a new popular concept to life within the Mafia from their point of view. Doing so, creating a positive association. Yet within Italy, the same topic contains a complete different view. Movies such as I Cento Passi demonstrate unenthusiastic view by those whom are outside yet negatively affected by those members. Unlike American films, the gangsters are not as often viewed at the protagonist and are the main causes for the problematic events. But how different is Italian Mafia and American
His role in The Godfather is that of the Don, or a commanding officer. He climbs the social ladder in the Corleone family, starting as a member and gains a higher reputation by killing the man believed to have orchestrated the attacks against his father, Virgil Sollozzo, and a corrupt police captain paid by Sollozzo. Michael then travels to Sicily and doesn’t move up in the family for a while. Two years later, his brother Sonny Corleone, who was the acting head of the family after their father was injured, was shot in a phone booth. Michael then returns to America to help out with the family: he assumes Sonny’s role as his father’s heir apparent, a Vice President who steps in when the Don is injured or killed. Once the Don retires, he becomes the new Don and takes over as the head of the crime family.
Let’s start with the story of The Godfather Part II. The movie’s story is a continuation of where the first movie left off, which is with Michael Corleone as the new don, or head of the family. However, this film is quite different from the first, or any other movie as it shows two different stories at once. One story is of Michael Corleone’s fall and the numerous legal battles he goes through as he tries to legitimize his family business, and the other is the story of Michael’s father, Vito, and his rise to power from young adult to mafia leader (Ebert). The story of Vito Corleone is shown through flashbacks that happen too often for my liking, and are not as
The American films The Godfather I and II directed by Francis Ford Coppola, included mise-en-scene to emphasize certain characteristics and themes during both films. In this essay I will discuss how mise-en-scene was used to portray the lives of the Mafia families in the 1940s and 50s.
The Godfather is the story of a Mafia family. It follows the rise of Michael Corleone within the family. Michael was once a war hero and did not want to be involved in the family business. When his father is shot though, Michael takes revenge on the people who did it and becomes a part of the Mafia lifestyle. When his older brother is murdered, Michael ascends to become the boss of the family, and proves to be more ruthless than his father and brother combined. The scene that I am analyzing is one where Michael is becoming his nephew’s godfather at his baptism.
Corleone family was one the famous crime family in Nek York. Vito Corleone, the leader of the Corleone family, who helped people who were willing to become his friends solve their problems. People also treated Vito in a respectful way and called him Godfather. Many guests attended to Connie Corleone, Godfather’s daughter’s wedding because the Godfather would satisfy all people’s requests. Also, all of Godfather’s sons were attending the big party. Sonny, the biggest son, who was an irritable man and lusted for women. Fredo, the second son, is a cowardly man. Michael, the youngest son, is a hero during World War II and he had never got involved in the family business. Michael brought a girl named Kay Adams, his girlfriend, and introduced
The crime organization that originated in Italy continues to exert its dominance over mainstream media. The organization’s ability to consume individuals entirely and create its own lifestyle coincides with the attribute of human nature that calls for a sense of belonging. This lifestyle has been depicted in several different forms of media, such as literature and film, for several years. In the film, The Godfather (1974), Francis Ford Coppola introduces the dichotomy of Don Vito Corleone, the sadistic, cruel mob leader, yet protective, compassionate father and husband. The ideals of family values and tradition are so neatly interwoven into this obscene lifestyle that it is nearly impossible to disassociate the two.
Vito eventually found his sister and killed the murderers, Vito sent his sister to a different part of the U.S. to keep her safe along with sending her money to buy a new house to start a new life. Vito managed his wealth by buying stocks and business to stay “underground,” because of some people know of the work he has done, but they promised to stay quiet. Vito was questioned by many people of how he gained his wealth, he somewhat lied saying he was originally a tailor. Vito told his closest friends about why he chose this line of business; he told them “If only somebody didn’t mess with my family, I was going to be a cook than a mobster.
Throughout the film, Michael Corleone played brilliantly by Al Pacino, experiences a major change in his way of thinking. Michael changes from believing that what his family does is wrong, to believing that his family's crimes are a necessary evil. He begins by insisting to his girlfriend that his family's crimes belong to his family, not to him. He was not involved in the business and did not want anything to do with it.
Unlike Michael, while Vito is the Godfather he still cares for his family and stands by them. While Michael is quick to take his children away from Kay, and turn on loyal friends. Vito comes across as mellow and relaxed. He has lived a rich, full life and earned a quiet retirement. As we see in the movie as a young man Vito is caring and devoted, however he is still fierce and violent. Unlike Michael, he does not let this violence succumb to him and take over entirely. Vito has tried keep his two worlds separate from one another and not entangle his family and his business. “Michael is cold-blooded, ruthless, smart, and determined. His ability to think clearly under fire, to be decisive, and to command respect makes him an excellent Godfather”. Although while Michael made a successful Godfather he failed to be a successful husband father and brother, unlike his father. Michael gets caught up in the mafia and his family life suffers from that. He has his own brother murdered, and the rest of his siblings hate him. Also the difference between Vito and Michael was Vito had friends while Michael created enemies. Both Vito and Michael got involved in the mafia in very different ways. Vito created the mafia after he returned to Sicily and became partners with Don Tommasino. By the early 1930s, Vito has organized his criminal operations as the Corleone crime family, the most powerful in the nation. Michael got involved when his father died and he had to step

Mise en scène envelopes the most perceptible aspects of a film that includes the actors, costumes, setting, and any natural and artificial details that represent the movie. According to Goodykoontz and Jacobs "We get our initial feeling about the characters and what might happen by seeing where they are, what their belongings are, how they are dressed, how they are lit, and how they react" (2014). While The Godfather was shot in 1972, it's setting takes place in the years after World War II. We see at the beginning of the movie when Michael returns home from the war, his military suit is indicative of that time. Michael does not want any parts of the family business but as the movie progresses, we see him change from a boy to a man in his dress, speech, and character. He is barely recognizable as the person we met at the wedding.
Mario Puzo’s "The Godfather" was the first and most influential gangster movie that paved the way for gangster movies of the future. The movie was directed by Frances Ford Copolla, who made many different ingenious ways to portray this gangster classic. The movie was a very subversive movie, and one of the first of all time. The Godfather has a many different uses of light settings through the whole movie, in which the movie can be interpreted on.
The Godfather presents Vito as the paradigmatic Mafia don. He is wise and intelligent, an excellent reader of others’ intentions, and a smooth, subtle talker, able to convince with words, not only bullets. Though a ruthless, violent criminal, Vito is also a warm, loving father and husband. In his later years, Vito comes across as relaxed and playful, even mellow. He has lived a rich, full life and earned a quiet retirement. Vito is both the perfect father and the perfect Godfather, making him a difficult model for all of his children, especially Michael, to imitate
Michael Corleone, the youngest son of Vito Corleone, initially doesn’t want to have anything to do with his family. He is apparently a law-abiding citizen and is evidently a war veteran. He seems to be a good-natured and tries to avoid identifying with Corleone activites, yet is fiercely loyal to his family, especially to his father. He is called by his peers as a civilian and refuses to acknowledge him as a criminal. Wnating to live an ordinary life was his choice, until an incident where he botched an assassination attempt on their patriarch; Vito Corleone, led to Michael trying to return the favor to Sollozo and McClusckey. This will eventually lead him entangled with the family affairs. With the family trying to prevent a war between other families, Michael starts to become more and more involved. His vengeful nature, coupled with his ruthless intellect earned the respect of his followers. He ordered the hit
