Film Analysis : ' The Night Room ' And ' Sweeping Corridor Shots '

The film Moonlight was released October 21, 2016. Moonlight is all African American cast, and was awarded over 25 awards including the Academy Award for best picture. This film is a coming of age story that follows the dramatic ups and downs of the life of Chiron, a young Africa American man growing up in Miami. The plot begins from the time he is in elementary school to the time he reaches adulthood. The plot is structured in three stages of the life of Chiron and touches on the topics of the struggle of dysfunctional households via socialization, sexuality and sexual identity, physical and emotion abuse, and the process of accepting ones self.

This is a criticism of Moonlight, a film directed by Barry Jenkins. It is a coming-of-age story, telling the journey of a young gay black man named Chiron. Through linear character development the film follows a young Chiron from adolescence into adulthood while growing up with alpha males in Miamis black ghettos. The Story is told in three parts, with a different actor playing the lead role in each section: a young Chiron named “Little”, as a teen named “Chiron”, and an adult named “Black”. Despite a compelling lead performance by Mahershala Ali and Naomie Harris, and its great soundtrack, Moonlight falls flat and never gets out of the shadow of its typical cliche plot, all the while, the film continued to never overcome the obstacle of

The movie Before Night Falls directed by Julian Schnabel offers viewers a glimpse of how the homosexual community in Cuba was being mistreated under Fidel Castro’s regime. The true story is told in the eyes of Cuban poet Reinaldo Arenas. The film depicts Arenas life in Cuba and all of the awful experiences that he had to deal with as a homosexual. Eventually he was arrested for false accusations of being a molester, however, he was actually under arrest for being a homosexual. Between the 1930s and 1990s, the Communist Cuba was abusive to the LGBT community as shown in their actions of harassment towards homosexuals, imprisoning the homosexuals, or sending them to re-education camps.

Low angle shot, where a camera points upwards from below, generally make people or things look bigger, more courageous and important. However, same angle shots sometimes will be chosen to emphasize different effects in one film. In the movie “Night of the Living Dead,” the director George A. Romero uses low angles for different purposes.

“Here’s Johnny!” A famous line from The Shining, when Jack Torrance goes mad and is hacking at the bathroom door with an axe to mutilate his wife, Wendy and son, Danny into many little bloody pieces for disobeying him. The Shining is a 1980 psychological horror film directed by Stanley Kubrick. Jack Torrance played by Jack Nicholson, quits his job as a school teacher and takes a job as caretaker at the isolated Overlook Hotel in Colorado during the winter, hoping to cure his writer 's block. He moves in along with his wife, Wendy portrayed by Shelley Duvall, and his telepathic son, Danny played by Danny Lloyd. Danny is later told that he has an special telepathic ability called shining, hence the title.

The film, The House I live In, opened my eyes to the severity of unfair law enforcement and the depths of the battle with war on drugs. Theoretically, the more people are being arrested for drugs, the cheaper, purer, and more available the drugs become. Making these arrests are not helping get the drugs off the streets, it is only opening up more opportunities for other people to pick up the business.

In the film, Night of the Living Dead, the movie starts with two siblings, John and Barbara, driving to their father's grave to drop off flowers. John is reluctant to be there and is eager to leave while Barbara is trying to pray. John teases her like when they were children saying “They’re coming to get you, Barbara!” when they both see an unknown man. Barbara goes to apologize to the unknown man but it seems he is dazed and kills John. Barbara escapes and finds herself at an empty house. In the house, she meets Ben, who borders up to the windows after taking down 3 undead. After a bit of listening to a radio for the current status of the state of emergency, Harry and Tom come upstairs. We learn that two men, two women, and a child had been in the basement of the house during Barbara’s and Ben’s struggle with the undead. After much argumentation on if the basement or upstairs was safer between Harry and Ben, Harry went back downstairs to his wife and child. Tom and his wife, Judy, stayed upstairs with Ben believing they could properly border up the windows together. After much convincing from Helen, Harry’s wife, Harry and she join the others upstairs. While listening on the radio, they are given more updates of the state of emergency. The radio announcer suggests instead of staying in place, to now go to one of the designated “safe areas”. The United States has been involved with multiple of wars over the years. But there is one war that the United States cannot seem to be win; the War on Drugs. Drugs have been around for years and years. The House I Live In, a film made in the 2012. Is a documentary about the war on drugs; how it has affected the country and individual people/families. During the film the narrator Eguene Jarecki goes from city to city showing and explaining how drugs have affected different individuals and their families. Eguene talks about the Boggs Act which was the start of Mandatory Minimum Sentencing on drug crimes. This law has put away about 2.3 million people. Which the majority of those prisoners have charges that are nonviolent drug crime acts. Eguene

Good Night, and Good Luck, is a film made by George Clooney in 2005. In response to the Iraq war. It follows the story of Sig Mickelson played by Jeff Daniels. A newscaster who is set in his values, exposing corruption, and keeping the government in line. In a time when America was having a communist red scare.

Barry Jenkins’s 2016 film, Moonlight, is a work that is characterized by its silences, both in what is unsaid, as well as the unresolved nature of many of its central tensions. In the film, silence functions to emphasize the interiority of the film’s subject, and to make the audience aware of itself. Such strategic use of absence recalls John Cage's groundbreaking composition, 4'33; a work that is distinguished by its lack of any audible musical accompaniment. For many, the piece is reflective of Cage's sexual identity as a gay man; the silence functioning as a metaphor for the “closet” (Katz 241). The scholar Jonathan Katz has pushed against such a totalizing reading of Cage's oeuvre, by noting that silence was part of his larger aesthetic and religious practices, and thusly cannot be considered as simply an aural manifestation of the closet (242). Katz argues that, "Silence was much more than conventionally unmusical; it provided a route toward an active challenge of the assumptions and prejudices that gave rise to homophobic oppression in the first place. For Cage, silence was an ideal form of resistance, carefully attuned to the requirements of the cold war consensus, at least in its originary social-historical context." (241).

There are always losses to each pleasant situation and unfortunately in the 1990 film directed by Penny Marshall, Awakenings, this theme appears throughout. In a chronically ill hospital where Dr. Malcolm Sayer is recruited with little to no experience with people, he works with multiple patients that are in a sleep-like state including Mr. Leonard Lowe. Set in the late sixties, there were not many medical advances that already existed to help these patients but Dr. Sayer makes unheard-of discoveries. Many awakenings occur in this film, but with these renewals comes gains and losses. Dr. Sayer, the staff, and the patients inhabited in this Brooklyn hospital gain and lose different things with their explorations.

Romney emphasizes the documentaries try to convey that the star’s offstage self is their purest achievement because producing music, making videos, and playing shows is not enough to satisfy the fans. The star is seen as more than a performer, they are seen as an icon or a force that manifests itself and when the star is on stage performing and not their authentic self, it leaves the viewers confused with the different personalities. Romney mentions David Bowie and Madonna to be two of the most transparent celebrities but when they started acting, the several personalities overshadowed their true selves.

The film, the Untouchables, was directed by Brian De Palma. It was set in the prohibition era, which was right at the start of the 1920’s. Prohibition can be described as a law that made selling and manufacturing alcohol illegal. By putting this law into effect, it actually increased the amount of crime and violence throughout cities in the US. This was ultimately due to the rise in organized crime, also known as gangs. In the movie specifically, it was centered around the rise of the Mafia in Chicago. By looking at the production of the movie, we can see how during prohibition, the Mafia controls everything and the violence ultimately it leads to.

In the film Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Johnny Depp delivered an over the top performance with his depiction of Hunter S. Thompson, the notoriously wild and drug addicted father of “gonzo journalism.” His acting is considered “believable” as Depp applied a variety of techniques to accurately portray this author. Depp used facial expressions to convey the roller coaster of tumultuous emotion in which Thompson openly existed. Throughout the film, Depp applied many exaggerated facial expressions; opening his eyes widely, or squinting, and shooting quick darting glances about, each time clutching a cigarette holder in his teeth.

Horror films are movies that aim to elicit a strong physiological reaction in the viewer, such as raised heartbeat and fear. Three horror films by the names of Psycho, Scream and The Messengers will be analysed and compared to an episode of the popular children’s show Shaun the Sheep. Five elements will be addressed in this analysis, those being camera techniques, Mise-en-scene, Editing, Lighting and Sound.
