Final Project
The Interview
Introduction
The artifact I chose to write my final project on is the movie, “The Interview.” I chose this movie because of the recent controversy it had not only in the United States but throughout the world. From movie theatres not being willing to play it and it going straight to TV. The fact that a movie was created with a plot to hurt North Korea’s top level leader has been considered a blatant act of terrorism and war and the North Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated they will not tolerate it. I find it interesting that in the United States we have become such an apathetic culture that we don’t think twice about watching a movie that is focused on assassinating a leader of another country. …show more content…

Teens rank the media as the leading source of information about sex, second only to sex education programs in school. The media now shows sex between unmarried partners 24 times more often than sex between partners (Lowe). This is also true for alcohol and smoking the largest breweries spend $200 million each year on advertising. Teenagers see between 1000 and 2000 beer commercials with the message that ‘real’ men drink beer which has been shown to have increased underage drinking (Lowe). Mass media has had a huge influence on our society due to the fact that we rely on mass media for all our information be it news, information, education or entertainment (Matthews). The women who are in the movie are reduced to objects of sexual interest and constantly referenced to as being “honeypotted” for each of the men. Lizzy Caplan played a C.I.A. operative and Diana Bang was a North Korean official who took care of all the logistics for the interview with Kim Jung-un. While I don’t think when this movie was written and directed it wasn’t meant to have a political agenda by the time it came out it brought a lot of things to light. The hack to Sony was initially thought to have been done by North Korea in protest to the movie. I don’t think this was thought about before hand as there are not many sympathizers to North Korea in the movie going world but all the press made people stop and think twice about it. In our media centered culture that we live in we rarely have to think for ourselves or use any critical thinking skills. Before we have a chance to analyze something we are being told what to think and say about the issue. Even with the movie going straight to video on demand it still earned $18 million in the first weekend. They say that all press is good press, thus the huge scandal surrounding the movie only helped to promote it
