Final Reflection Essay
The introduction of a paper is just like someone's appearance, it will leave the first impression and will be the first thing judged. While reading the first paragraph, the reader decides if the essay will be a complete load of garbage, or something worth their time. Recently, I like to believe that more and more of my papers have been falling into the latter. I have learned that a superb beginning is essential to a satisfying end product. Among this, I have learned much more from English Composition. I believe that I am a much stronger writer now than I was when I started this class, some of this progress is due to my ever-changing writing process. At the start of this class, I would start my body paragraphs

Since the beginning of English Composition my time usage has drastically changed. I wrote my first week essay all in one sitting. When I did this, it limited my ideas. It was hard to come up with a fresh idea when I just wanted to be done. For a few of my essays, I would write them the night before; these essays were definitely the worst. I was tired, stressed and hurrying to finish. When I work on an essay off and on, I allow myself to come up with new ideas and I am able to work without as much pressure. Without the pressure, I actually find writing enjoyable. Throughout this semester, writing has become less of a chore and more of a challenge and art. When I proofread the day after I finish my essay I am able to find more mistakes. Alongside proofreading, when I write my essay ahead of time it allows time for heavy editing and multiple drafts. When I am not trying to do my essay in a short time span ideas flow freely. When writing it is beneficial to let my mind wander because it allows me to come up with new ideas. Now that I allow myself an adequate amount of time, I have found the many benefits of using an outline. I usually include my main points and possible quotes I could use to support main ideas. An outline makes the essay come easier, so that I can concentrate on sentence structure and grammar. Aside from many other things, the way I proofread my essays has changed immensely. As I said before, I no
Writing used to be one of my strengths, but throughout my coursework in this semester, it was challenging to take the first step to approach my first draft. I was always taken a long time to think about the thesis and introduction because I personally felt both were very important for the entire essay in order to attract readers. Merely, I could not make my thesis clear and good as always. Therefore, I would get some inspiration from my friends or tutors, or watched drama and news; this would be my first step to write a first draft. Unlike in High School, we have assigned at least 1200 words essay, and greatly opened my mind to develop a deeper understanding of each topic. For my writing habit, when I first look at the topic, I would think about what professor taught us in class or search some websites for stimulating more inspiration. Especially working on critical response essay or opinion essay, these two types of essays were required to write an argument and to be more thoughtful. It is difficult to identity some controversy topics in my knowledge as an English learner. Although I have always been a thinker and I
In my first “Who I am as a Writer” paper I stated how one of the areas that I needed to improve was writing. I went into more depth talking about how my writing is not descriptive enough and how I cannot grab the reader's attention. Even though I still need to continue making improvements, I have gotten better in both of these aspects. Compared to my papers in high school my introduction paragraphs have improved.
When I write a paper, it depends on how I feel and the other work I have to get done. Once I feel it is time to write, I go straight to the living room and embrace my inner Shakespeare. Normally I write at night. I tend to think better when the sun is down. To be honest, my brain works best when it is slightly tired. My best ideas come from a sleepy brain. While I am writing, I typically have a few tabs open to help me write a better paper. One tab I will aways have open is a dictionary. If I know there is a better word to use but I can not think of it, I will use the dictionary. My writing schedule is plan, procrastinate, then write. I plan out what I will write about the day I am assigned to the essay. Then I will procrastinate writing the essay because I tell myself I need time to edit my plan. Finally I will write the essay the day before it is
I have learned so many things out of this class that would be very useful to me in the future. Also, I don’t think that if I truly want to write about all the things I have learned from this class it would all fill a 2 pages paper. However, the three main things that I have retained from this include how to write a response paper, how to read a book better, and how to better write essays.
High school was a time when writing assignments began to have more fascinating prompts, but also needed more structure. I drew ideas for my writing from several different sources including my friends and family’s opinions, things on social media, and my own beliefs. All of these diverse sources enhanced my writing and helped me to become more open minded. I always started a paper by organizing my thoughts and ideas by writing down three or four of the main points I wanted to include. From there, I wrote a rather brief outline only consisting of my thesis statement and the opening sentences for each of my body paragraphs. Before starting my first draft, I would look over my short outline, read the assignment once more, and then begin writing. I did not prepare nearly as much as I should have, but I was still able to produce a good first
After completing clinical simulation laboratory session 5: surgical scrub, I found that entire process of surgical scrub is way too complicated and time consuming: the entire process took me 5 minutes to complete and one wrong move could result in restarting whole process. My tutor emphasized the importance of surgical asepsis and its role in preventing infection but surgical scrub seemed torturous and waste of time to me. Still not fully convinced, I decided to do some research to find out the importance of proper surgical scrub.
Writing, something that has never befriended me, will always be an obstacle in my life. For me, it’s difficult to just sit down at a table and write something interesting and creative. I try to do so every time I am assigned a essay, and sometimes it turns out to be successful, but most of the time it is unsuccessful. Every time I am given a written assignment, I go through the same routine: I sit at the table and stare at my computer with my fingers on the keyboard. I have noticed that I come up with a lot of ideas, but I focus mainly on how to structure them while writing. In three articles written by Anna Lomott, Marie Foley and Donald M. Murray, they all discuss different strategies on how to
I'm a final semester Computer Science student at the University of Wollongong, Australia - specialising in Systems Security and Software Engineering. I do have a passion for user interface design, something I look at in my past time. I generally prefer design that is simple and minimal, after all good design should recedes to the backgrond, allowing for the content to take centerstage.
Today, time and experience have taught me some immensely better tactics for writing essays and papers in general. I've found that by getting an early start on my assignments, I have much more time to focus on the overall quality
Not attending college has always been my biggest regret in life. Believing that you are never too old to learn new things, here I am at Middlesex Community College putting my biggest regret in my rear-view mirror. I have selected each of my previous 12 classes with much contemplation, with the exception of this class as it was presented to me as a must attend to graduate situation. I approach things with an open mind and these past three days were no exception. IDS-101 may be an accelerated, short and sweet class, yet I found it brimming with life lessons that people, regardless of age, gender, background or choice of majors would greatly benefit from.
When I had my interview with the executive director (let’s call her Marian), one of the first questions I had was about faith and spirituality in L’Arche: how did it work in communities where spirituality could be expressed in so many different ways...or where it might not even be expressed at all? Marian explained that L’Arche might have started as a Christian movement, but it grew to accept spirituality in all its forms. She went on to explain that there were many people in the community who didn’t associate themselves with religion, but still shared in the L’Arche mission. When she said this, I remembered the question we had posed in class: how could L’Arche work outside
Throughout my life, my mom has always told me to create an outline as a way to organize my thoughts. Although I do outline before every paper, sometimes I find it difficult. Coming up with all of my ideas I want to focus on can be stressful especially when it is a difficult topic. Possibly instead of always outlining I would be interested in grouping my notes. This is one strategy that is mentioned in this book. As a student that enjoys making note cards, this could possibly be more effective. It allows you to make different piles and separate your notecards accordingly. This is definitely a way to gather my ideas in a more organized manner. Another negative challenge to my writing is the beginning of my writing process. Although I might have my outline all written out, I struggle with starting out my essay. I would not consider myself an academic writer, so sometimes I have to really think about sentences for a long period of time before writing them down. I believe creating an essay blueprint will be a good way to assemble parts of an essay. Figure 10 in the book is a good example of a blueprint. It is a different type of outline, however, could provide assistance during the essay process. There would be a chart and each paragraph would have its own
Just 26,130 hours left. To many college students in my shoes, this number represents the hours they must put forth until they receive their diplomas. However, for me, this number has more significance: it represents the fleeting moments I have to academically and socially enrich myself in order to empower my community. While 26,130 hours might seem like an enormous amount of time, with the time spent on studying, sleeping, and maintaining good hygiene, this amount of time is decimated. With the remaining time, I have a choice of sustaining myself financially by working as a tutor or focusing on my interests through extracurricular activities. In most situations, I am obliged to pick the former as opposed to the latter. Although I gain money
I’m a slow writer, so I never wait to the very last minute to write a essay. When a paper is first assigned I try to work on it a little bit every day. This helps me a lot because I don’t feel rushed and I have more time to work out my ideas. I usually try to finish a day before the date it’s due so I can proofread it. I don’t think I’m very good at proofreading because I always get a lot of corrections on my papers.
During week one, my initial definition of learning was listening to an instruction, studying and then rehearsing that information in my mind, or categorizing it in a way so I could remember most of what was taught in the course. The class has opened a new dimension for me in the learning process; from understanding how I process information to deciphering which learning processes I use in intentional learning or metacognition. Understanding my learning patterns form dynamic learning relationship is a key element to my view of how and why I process the learning experience, even relating it to every day life.
