When I found out that Hope wasn't the main characters birth name, I was very surprised. From the very beginning of the story, you could tell she was a Hope and definitely not a Tulip. Hope's name was a great fit for her, not only because of the things she overcame, but also because of the way she held herself through those tough times. Her aura screamed hope. Hope held her head high through the worst times in her life, such as when Gleason Beal betrayed her and took off with all of her and Addie's money. Another rough spot in her life was not having a mom or dad. Hope had met her mom, Deena, a couple times, but she had no idea who her dad was. Throughout the book, she remained hopeful that her dad would come and swoop her off her feet and fix
Hope Was Here is about Hope (Tulip) Yancey, a 16-year-old girl who lives with her adoptive mother/aunt, Addie. When she was born, Hope was only 2 pounds and 5 ounces and the doctors said she wouldn’t make it. Hope’s mother, Deena, named her Tulip, a name that Hope hated. When Hope was 12, she legally changed her name from “Tulip” to “Hope”. Deena wasn’t capable of raising a child, so she “gave” Hope to Addie. Addie always wanted a child, but went through three miscarriages and her husband left her for a dental hygienist. Hope never had a clue of who her father is, but she knows for sure he is looking for her. Hope has a scrapbook where she puts pictures of men who would be her father or who look like her. Hope and Addie are packing their Buick to go to Mulhoney, Wisconsin from Brooklyn, New York.
The guards seize Friedrich by the arm. He stalls for as long as he can by conducting to the Beauty and the Beast waltz he hears in his head. Mike reaches and strains his arm down to the branch where the harmonica is nestled. The wind rushes past his head as he tumbles down to the ground. These are the intense situations in which the main characters in the novel face life or death situations, and whether they would make it out in one piece is extremely unlikely. A harmonica bounces around this story and becomes a symbol of hope for all three of the characters. Hope is their only resource to draw the strength they need. They were saved by hope. The light in the darkest of times was proven to them and shown to them by hope. In the award-winning novel, Echo by Pam Munoz Ryan, the harmonica symbolizes hope. It starts its long journey in a mystical forest with three sisters.
Life can be hard at times, but a young boy shows the opposite of that. This can be seen in the short story “Fly Away Home” by Eve Bunting. Andrew and his dad show that there still is hope in all the bad things that happen to them. It is important to realize that they show these things by showing thoughtfulness, helpfulness, and sadness.
Exemplar case: Kathy is a married 45-year old mother of one and she has recently been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Kathy has always been a positive person in every situation and is quite known at her church for her smile and uplifting words of encouragement. Kathy’s husband and teenage daughter came to visit her at the hospital and were initially shocked and saddened by her sickly appearance. Her husband
Hope, by definition means to look forward to something with reasonable desire and confidence. Hope also means a person or thing in which expectations are centered. When discussing the word hope, one must consider the core values by which the word works around. You could hope for financial success, world peace, or simply hope for some good out of your day. In 2006, Barack Obama wrote the political biography The Audacity of Hope to outline his core political and spiritual beliefs, as well as his opinions on different aspects of American culture. The Illinois senator divided the book into nine chapters, each concentrating on both his own and the United States’ successes and failures in local and state politics. While revealing great
Question 8: Analyse how specific techniques were used to portray inspiring ideas in a visual; or oral text.
Cry the Beloved Country had multiple parts where Paton revealed hope through a few of the characters in the book. Alan Paton revealed a hidden message of hope for South Africa through Cry the Beloved Country. Throughout the book every character shows some sort of hope about one thing or another. Two of the main characters that show a lot of hope throughout the book are Gertrude and Stephen Kumalo. The majority if not all of the characters encounter hope about something or another throughout their life in the book.
As the book has progressed it has become exponentially less confusing. Will Weaver, the author, has given more information about the deep hatred that Billy's and King's families have for each other. Weaver has also mentioned why they are all going on a trip together. The book is now a lot less confusing and I know the background of the story, so I am happy with how the book is turning out to be.
The child soldier Ishmael Beah once said, “These days I live in three worlds: my dreams, and the experiences of my new life, which trigger memories from the past.” This represented what Ishmael had to go through during the war. The Sierra Leone war began in 1991. This war was fought by the RUF (Revolutionary United Front) and the National Sierra Leone Army Force. As a consequence, 10,000 child soldiers were recruited, along with them there Ishmael Beah. Beah was only 13 years old when he was forced to become a child soldier by the rebels. In addition, rebel superiors brainwashed Ishmael, along with the rest of the recruited kids by inducing them into drugs such as marijuana, brown-brown and amphetamines. Consequently, a lot of problems were
Throughout the novel I never lost focus and every page ended with a cliff hanger. John Le Carre does an amazing job at keeping the reader intrigued by not leading on what will happen next and by continuing to add new characters and plot twists when we least expect it. For example, towards the end of the book readers are kept on edge by never knowing what will happen next. Whenever John got me to believe a certain thing would happen such as Mundt going to trial and being the only one on trial, the plot would twist and change to Fiedler being punished as opposed to Mundt. The same thing happened when I believed that Mundt was the one trying to hurt Leamas when he broke in at Fiedlers instead of him actually trying to protect and help Alec. Furthermore,
Ishmael Beah was a boy from Sierra Leone who became a soldier in the country`s tragic civil war. He spent nearly all his childhood running away from the war and eventually ended up joining the army. During difficult times, Ishmael always held on to hope to continue his life’s journey. In A Long Way Gone, the theme is “Always have hope”, and is shown through Ishmael Beah’s hope for a better life, to find his family, and through the rehab staff`s hope for the boy soldiers.
When you start to lose hope, you need something to help you get through life. “I needed a distraction. And a prize. I deserved a prize for all the hours in this room.” In the middle of the book when Hope starts to lose Hope, she decides to start a point system to keep her distracted. I think that the whole point of the point system in the book is to really show how desperate Hope is and to show how much she was really being abused by her mother. Hope hopes that the point system will help her mother stop calling her names and make her feel terrible about herself. When everyone you love fails you, you lose hope in everything. ¨Your birthday comes at our busiest time of the year at work, I don’t have the energy to plan a party……. I think Lydia and I are going to hit some of the spring sales today.” When Hope’s mother decides to go shopping instead of spending time with Hope on her birthday Hope totally lost hope. Sometimes no matter how much hope you have for something to happen, it may never happen. Although throughout the book Hope tries to overlook the bad and convince herself that her mom does love her, this is where Hope hit rock bottom. Most importantly this part of the story reveals the real character of Hope’s mother. I think that this part is extremely important to the story because Hope builds up and gets herself together again and continues hoping that everything will be okay. I think that Hope saw
Historical significance is the most influential qualifier by which a book is determined to be a “classic” or not. Though a myriad of factors are involved when determining significance, many literary classics have the following characteristics in common: a revolutionary approach to an idea or problem, themes relevant to the events taking place during the piece’s writing, and a long-lasting effect on literature. While subtle, Milton’s Paradise Lost contains all three of those attributes. Paradise Lost has controversy, a theme of hope relevant to world events at that time, and provides a literary template upon which numerous other works are based.
‘A Song of Hope’ by Oodgeroo Noonuccal, inspires you and gives you hope, to go do something useful to you, me or the world. Oodgeroo Noonuccal is a woman you’d look up to. She used her pen to give voice to the ingenious struggle for rights and justice and won herself 7 literary awards along the way. She made the mood of this poem inspirational with a inspirational mood with a confident, feminine tone and steadfast rhythm, to get the audience hopeful and inspired, to fight for justice.
Alan Paton in the book, Cry, the Beloved Country, is creating an outcry for people to feel sorry due to the fear and injustices the natives and the whites of South Africa are facing. Fear and injustices have gripped the hearts of the black and the white population in South Africa, a country that was engulfed, at the time, by the lurking violence and turmoil. The title asks for the people to cry for the children, who will have to be brought up in a country that was full of sins and evil. Moreover, the elders are also in tears to watch the country, which they loved so much turn into violence and fear, besides, callings for those who are doing wrong to stop it. No one wanted to see their beloved country consumed by evil.
