Most often companies look for project experience when evaluating new project managers, followed by communication skills. 2.2 Competency standards approach to address insufficient training Research suggests that the competence-based training allows for the identification and implementation of project managers who can successfully perform. Recent evidence suggests that while the bodies of knowledge provide the standard for what professional project managers are expected to know, competency standards provide us with the view of what project managers should be able to do and how they are be expected to behave. According to Omidvar, Jaryani, and Zafarghnadi (2011), “They illustrate evaluative criteria, which can be used for measuring performance, identifying training and development needs, setting of goals among project managers, predicting performance and providing a performance management system”. The purpose of performance-based standards is to understand competence from validation of the required skills. This demonstration can be through evidence of actual work concluded on past projects or through simulation or direct observation of work on an up-to-date project. There is a reliable format for performance-based standards across nations with some minor distinctions in the terminology. For the purpose of this study, the competency standards approach is being used as the primary model for assessing individual project competence.
