"Tuffy" Goff aka: Findley Norris Goff Although there are many famous Arkansans, Findly Norris Goff is the one who seemed most interesting to me. Abner is his TV/radio name, and what everybody knew him as. Abner had a partner, they called him Lum. These partners were the radio//TV hit. Findly Norris Goff led a very interesting life. Chet Luack, and his partner Findley Norris Goff created Lum and Abner, a program on the radio that was based on the people of Pine Ridge. It was so popular, it was voted one of the longest rinning TV/radio programs ever aired. Eventually the pine ridge partners make there own movie(Lash). Norris Goff was born on May 30, 1906, to Rome and Dora Goff in Cove. Also he attended Oklahoma University, he was the class clown of both collages. Graduating with a degree in business. On August 8, 1929, he married Elizabeth Bullion of Mena. The couple had two children (Stucker). He developed the nickname “Tuffy” in high school called “Tuffy”. After high school, Norris traveled to small general stores throughout the area, ostensibly to learn the family business. Instead, he spent most of his time talking to the old-timers around the pot-bellied stove. Goff was a gifted, he would always be performing in the classroom or on the street corner. His mother later claimed that all the family members were funny, but Goff was the only one who got paid for it (Stucker). Goff and Chet Lauck had become well known for their off-the-cuff routines at many local events and so were invited to represent Polk County in a statewide charity radio broadcast in Hot Springs.
