Play has always been central to the developmental-interaction approach as a mode for learning. The focus has shifted over time, however. Initially, with influences from Dewey, pretending was seen as a central pathway of intellectual development. It was how concepts were defined and built up, and meanings became organized into coherent wholes, including scripts.
