Since the beginning of America’s history, there have been Amendments that protect the rights of its citizens. Whether that be from other countries, other people, or the government, these Amendments have helped America grow, and stay secure. However, it can be argued that one Amendment stands out more than the rest. The First Amendment has helped defend the rights of American citizens the most throughout the course of history. The First Amendment allows people to voice their opinions without repercussions. “Congress will make no law abridging the freedom of speech,” (First Amendment Rights). This allows anybody to practice their own religion, without repercussions. The Amendment allows prohibits the government from creating an official religion of the country. “The establishment clause prohibits the government from passing legislation to establish an official religion or preferring one religion over another,” (First Amendment). The Amendment also forces the separation of the church and the state. This ensures that choices will not be made with religion in mind. The freedom of religion also improves immigration throughout the country. Some countries prohibit certain religions and improved immigration. “the government may not jail, fine, or impose civil liability on people or organizations based on what they say or write, except in exceptional circumstances,” (Stone, Geoffrey). This shows that the government knows the population will try and obstruct, or hinder their progress. That if the citizens are allowed to change everything, that everything would constantly be delayed. In the United States, this is not the case. Over many years, the government has implemented ways that require a majority to get things changed. That way small groups of people can voice their opinions without bringing the government to a halt with changes. If anything, these changes help the government, and show officials were the problems are. They allow the government to see and understand people’s frustrations and work to fix them. In that way, the American government has remained strong, but yet flexible and susceptible to change at the same time.
The First Amendment has contributed to the success in the United States in the most major way. Without the first Amendment, the government would have collapsed not even one hundred years into its lifetime because of slavery. The First Amendment has protected people from an oppressive government and allowed them to live a peaceful life.
