First Coast, also known as Northeast Florida, is located on the Atlantic coast, comprising of five counties surrounding Jacksonville: Duval, Baker, Clay, Nassau and St. Johns. It extends past the southern end of Anastasia Island to Marineland. The name “First Coast” originally appeared in a marketing campaign in the 1980s, and has its origins as the first area of Florida to be colonized by Europeans. In the fall of 1861, Smalls was allocated to the CSS Planter, an armed Confederate military transport. On May 12, 1862, the Planter′s three white officers chose to spend the night aground. Around 3:00 a.m. the next morning, Smalls and seven of the eight crew members chose to make a keep running for the Union boats, as they had early arranged. Smalls wearing the chief's uniform and had a straw cap like that well used by the captain. He cruised the Planter out of what was then known as Southern Wharf, then ceased at a nearby wharf to get his own family and the groups of other crew members, who were hiding there. Smalls' escape
ZLAC being the nation’s oldest women rowing club, introduced many women cross the nation to the sport of rowing and with its popularity growing it allowed for further growth for women and in the realm of sports. In 1973 the San Diego Crew Classic was created by Patricia Stone Wyatt a member of ZLAC and by Joe Jessop Sr. a member of the San Diego Rowing Club. The San Diego Crew Classic was created as an incentive to bring top collegiate crews to Mission Bay for showdown regattas. This attention to the public made rowing more aware to the media and that lead to more women rowers being discovered. Pelican Bay State Prison in Northern California, is a supermax state prison and is known as the most notorious state prison. Segregated Housing Unit or the SHU came from Pelican Bay due to prisoners being isolated in solitary confinement. Supermax prison is where prisoners are held in extreme isolation, sometimes for years or decades. According to California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, “Pelican Bay houses approximately 1,170 inmates in the SHU.”
Cook and his crew returned to Hawaii in Kealakekua Bay. Belief in the explorers as gods was restored when they anchored their ships in this specific bay. Kealakekua Bay was regarded as the sacred bay of Lono and at the time of their arrival, they were having a festival dedicated to Lono. The English abused the charity shown by the Polynesians, taking advantage of their goods, ideas, and crops. They praised the explorers and treated them as royalty.

There was a wildfire in northern California’s Big Sur coastline. It had spanned over 42 square miles and firefighters have been fighting to put the fire out before it spreads; damaging more homes. As of now 34 homes have been destroyed, individuals had to evacuate 350 properties, and the flames have threatened approximately 2000 buildings. There have been two reported deaths as a result of the fire; and 11 hikers were rescued. Firefighters have suspected that some of the hikers were responsible for tending to a marijuana patch of 900 plants. Marijuana is illegal to grow and can only be used for medicinal purposes. Juan Pounce de Leon was the First European explore and first Spanish explore to find Florid and claimed this new territory for his country naming it La Florida, meaning Land of Flowers. “In 1521, on his second expedition to Florida, they landed on the southwest coast of Florida, with the intention of founding a colony, but he was fatally wounded in an Indian attack soon after his arrival.”

Port Phillip bay is located south of Victoria, Australia and is made up of a total of 16 bays and hosts many beaches. It was founded by George bass in 1797 and has been a thriving part of Melbourne ever since, homed to the Bun wurrung tribe. The bay is relatively shallow with an average depth of 13 meters. It’s 264 km squared in length and a total of 1930 km squared in area. Its home to over 10,00 species that live along the sandy seafloor, seagrass beds and rocky reefs. Dredging first began in February 2008 to deepen the bay by 14 meters.

Every year, visitors flock to Muir Woods National Monument to visit the coastal redwoods. The forest is indeed awe-inspiring, but it isn’t the only site worth visiting. The lesser known – and therefore less crowded – Muir Beach, which is located just three miles west of Muir Woods, is equally worthy of a stopover, either in conjunction with a visit to Muir Woods or as a destination all of its own.
