First Day Writing I only have ever done one short story assignment that I was proud of. That would have been a story that I had to write for my creative writing class in high school. It was for my final grade in that class. My short story was called “The Gambler.” This is how I started the story. The teacher gave us dices to roll. We would roll the dices with pictures on them. Then pick a topic and a theme from what you had rolled on the dice. My story is is about a man who gambled away his money and his life after he got back from the war. He gambled and lost everything he had eventually ended up living on the streets of New York City. By writing the short story. I came out of my shell of being afraid to express and prove to myself my
The 1919 fix of the World Series by the Chicago White Sox against the Cincinnati Reds was one of the most infamous events in the history of American sport. Though it was not the first (nor was it likely the last) fix in the game’s history, it had a far greater negative impact on the game’s perception throughout America than any other preceding or proceeding fix. Americans were forced to come to grips that their game—America’s game—was flawed, and that its reputation had been compromised by a few people chasing the almighty dollar. As Eliot Asinof said in a 1988 interview and as he portrayed in his Eight Men Out, however, the eight players who came together to throw the series were not out to ruin the game they loved. It was not that
Gambling and the unpredictability of the roulette wheel stand at the center of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s The Gambler. Despite the fact that it is not a very rational activity, gambling captures the enthusiasms of many in The Gambler, enthralling those characters that are intoxicated by the feelings of victory. Experienced gamblers often work out strategies to ensure success, or at least a greater chance of success. Unfortunately, these types of patterns and strategies simply do not apply in games of chance like roulette. As Jeff Love describes, there is not a “fixed constant or indubitable ground permitting a deductive determination of the results of each turn of the wheel” in the game of roulette (Love 373). Put more simply, roulette is a game of
There is no specific treatment option that is more beneficial. However, there are a variety of treatment options available for gambling addiction such as Gambler’s Anonymous, which is a support group and psychotherapy that involves cognitive behavioral therapy. Family therapy or group meetings with professional counselors can assist family members. In addition, there is the National Problem Gambling Helpline Network and Gamblers Anonymous that help love ones with their gambling problems (www.casino.org). The medication that is used to treat compulsive gambling is antidepressants and mood stabilizers (www.mayoclinic).
On September 5, 2015, Christ United Methodist Church hosted an open gamblers anonymous meeting in Long Beach, MS. There were a total of 7 people attended the meeting on this particular day. Each person introduced themselves to the group and the rules for the meeting were presented to the group, stressing the importance of anonymity. We, as group, recited the 12-steps, which was provided in a booklet.
Cook County was having more patients than it could handle complaining about chest pain. Also, determining if the pain could be a heart attack was a very inefficient and a long process with too much information. So they streamlined the process, mainly considering 4 things which were the EGG, fluid in lungs, systolic pressure, and unstable angina. The results were more accurate and saved time. This showed that, sometimes with too much information, there is too much of the complicaticated information and an answer can’t be reached and with less information a correct answer can be reached quickly.
I had a lengthy Christmas poem published in a local paper in sixth grade, and I often created original characters to co-star in my favorite movies and book series, and I never struggled in any of my English classes, but I have never been a phenomenal writer. Good at times, maybe. But the most I do is write satisfactory essays, the occasion poem, and long ago, terribly amateur fiction.
Think about how your favorite stories began. In what way did the author start the story to catch your attention? What was it that made you want to cheer for the main character, the hero, as he or she ventured out? Open your digital notebook and describe your strategy and the reading skills you will use to succeed in this lesson.
Something must be at risk in your writing or it will have no tension, suspension, or attention to the reader
The story of my history as a writer is a very long one. My writing has come full circle. I have changed very much throughout the years, both as I grew older and as I discovered more aspects of my own personality. The growth that I see when I look back is incredible, and it all seems to revolve around my emotions. I have always been a very emotional girl who feels things keenly. All of my truly memorable writing, looking back, has come from experiences that struck a chord with my developing self. This assignment has opened my eyes, despite my initial difficulty in writing it. When I was asked to write down my earliest memory of writing, at first I drew a blank. All of a sudden, it became very clear to me, probably because it had some
For example, I would write the paragraph like this: Back when I was in seventh grade I met a boy name John. He and I became great friend. Unlike other children I have met, he was different. He has strong acting Autism, which freaked out many people, as they did not know how to act around him. Yet, for me it was easy. I would be myself when I talked to him and we got to know each other. The things he told me gave me a new perspective on the world around me. I learned not to be quick to judge a person and if you take the time to get to know someone that you normally would not become friends with, you could discover things you never knew. John helped me change how I interact with the people around me and make new friends. He was amazing in every way possible. John touched my heart in a way that I will never
In “Video 8: ‘Getting Along Together,’” Joanne Hendrick emphasizes the importance of communication in teaching a child how to interact and get along with others. Hendrick conveys that the encouragement, explanation, and modeling of positive and considerate behavior is essential to helping a child learn how to get along with others. This positive behavior includes how to empathize, how to act more generously, how to be respectful, and how to help others. Hendrick also expresses that teaching kids to be nice and helpful of others can be rewarding and make them feel good as well.
Binocular single vision is achieved when an object from same position in space stimulates corresponding points on the retina. This simultaneous stimulation of corresponding retinal points results in the perception of viewing a single object with the two eyes. In someone with normal retinal correspondence, diplopia occurs when an object being viewed stimulates non-corresponding parts of the retina. This results in the perception of two, disparate objects located in different positions in space that are unable to be fused as one object (Greer, 2014). Ms. Bechler reports she has been experiencing intermittent vertical diplopia for the past 3 months. Her recent onset of transient diplopia indicates the diplopia may be secondary to a recent change in her ocular and/or systemic health.
[Attention Getter]: Having money without having to work really hard to get more than you really have. That would be nice!
Comedy in Midsummer Night’s Dream Shakespeare displays wordplay regularly throughout Midsummer Night’s Dream. Wordplay is the witty usage of words and banter such as puns, irony, and oxymorons (Belknap, 2017). William Shakespeare uses wordplay to lighten up the scene and establish comedy. It helps tell a story by entertaining, amusing and providing satire.
I’ve always enjoyed making up stories or little scenarios in my mind , but I’ve never really shared them with anybody. This year I had an open class period and decided to take 10 minutes of courage and sign up or it. I had no idea that Mr. Buhrman, the previous English teacher, would make us share our writings. When he told us we would share the next piece that we wrote in a group, I was beyond nervous because I had never shared my writing with anyone. I spent a lot of time writing it and rewriting it to make sure
