The first Seminole war started when Andrew Jackson became general of the southern army. The war was only a year long. The first attack on Fowltown was surprising and outraged the Creek Indians and lead to further battles. Andrew Jackson was born on March 15,1767. Andrew Jackson's mother was named Elizabeth Jackson. His father, Andrew Jackson, died a few days before he was born. He was born in Waxhaws, South Carolina. He was a lawyer, representative, and a judge. He worked in South Carolina as a lawyer. He was elected as the seventh president of the United States in 1828, he served 2 terms from 1828 to 1837. He died on June 8, 1845. While he was the general of the U.S. army, he was the one who ordered Fort Jackson to be burned and destroyed.…show more content…
Most of the battles were in Florida and in southern Georgia. The battles started because the Seminole Indians were allowing any escaped slaves to become a part of their tribe. The southern states didn't like that so they declared war on the Seminole Tribe. The first attack was on November 21 when American troops attacked the Creek Indian village of Fowltown which is now Decatur county. The troops came again on the 23rd of November and Neamathla the chief of the village and his tribe came out of the swamps and ambushed the Union soldiers .The attacks on Fowltown ended a war of words that had gone on for months between Neamathla and Major David.E.Twiggs the commanding officer at Fort Scott on the lower Flint River in Michigan. Neamathla refused to move his tribe from the lands ceded by the the US by the Treaty of Fort Jackson. The Treaty of Fort Jackson said that the Creek Indians had to cede 23 million acres of their land. The Treaty was signed on August 9,1814. That was what caused the first attack on Fowltown.
