The first spy organization, the Mechanics, was founded by Paul Revere who was in charge of developing a plan to warn the colonists of the British movement. The British were on their way to arrest Samuel Adams and John Hancock, members of the Sons of Liberty, but were unaware of the spies that were set up and waiting for the British to show up. On the night of the 18th of April, 1775, Paul Revere, William Dawes, and Dr. Samuel Prescott traveled from Boston Harbor to Concord to warn the citizens that the redcoats were coming. At about 10:30 that night, Lieutenant Colonel Smith marched with about 100 men towards Lexington where a couple hundred red coats, led by General Gage, awaited them. When the colonists finally did show up at Lexington, Smith ordered his men not to fire until they were fired upon. On the other side, none of the British troops fired until three shots were fired that originated from the colonists in response to a British soldier that fired several random shots, most likely to force colonists to shoot first. Later known as the “shot heard round the world,” this was the beginning of the revolution because the colonies had finally decided that they wanted to get their independence from Great Britain. The colonists, however, had been informed for weeks that the British would be coming through Concord for supplies. Upon receiving the news of the soon to be march by the British through Concord, the colonists moved most of their supplies to safety. When the British realized that the supplies they were looking for were no longer there, they began burning the weapons and other military equipment that they had found.
