The Five People You Meet in Heaven starts out with a man named Eddie celebrating his 83rd birthday before going to heaven. Unlike traditional stories, the author, Mitch Albom, starts this book at the end, the end of Eddie’s life that is. “It might seem strange to start a story with an ending. But all endings are also beginnings. We just don’t know it at the time” (Page 1) Eddie died by trying to save a young girl from being crushed by a falling ride. After his death, he enters heaven, where he meets five people that he affected or has impacted his life. Throughout his journey of meeting the five people, Eddie and the reader learn a valuable lesson that everything happens for a reason. When Eddie arrived in heaven, he is greeted by a blue man, whom he has never met, who tells him that the reason he died was because of Eddie. “What … killed … you?” The Blue Man looked a bit surprised. Eddie grew up hating his father because of how he treated Eddie. He was mad at his father because he never showed compassion towards Eddie. He would often get drunk and yell and beat at Eddie. Ruby advises him to let go of his anger and learn to forgive his father. “Look,” he snapped. “You don’t know the guy.” “That’s true.” She rose. “But I know something you don’t. And it is time to show you.” (Page 133) She then proceeds to show him that his father was not as bad of a man as Eddie thinks. She shows him that his father died trying to save a friend. Eddie listens to Ruby’s advice and lets go of his anger and forgave his father for all the things he put Eddie through in life. If Ruby was not in the next room in the hospital during the day Eddie’s father died, he would have never learned who his father really is.
