In society we believe that you either born smart or born normal. Today I'm going to show you that all that is proven differently with the studies called mind set. Carol S. Dweck shows that there are actually two different kinds of mind a growth and a fixed mindset. You're probably asking what the difference A growth Mindset allows us to gain more information by challenging our self because we were raised that way. While a Fix mindset is basically you know everything and think that you don't need to learn something new because you just want to look smart, but when confronted with a challenge you tend to back down and when you fail a test you tend to give up or even cheat (Dweck 9) That was a small taste of what mind set is.
Now we move on to a time where we find out that I once had a Fix mindset but change to a growth. I remember it like was yesterday I finally finished my first term and was know moving on to my second term. Hawthorn Middle school south a place of learning and fun that what they told me when I came there for my first day of second term I still remember that fresh aroma of pine sole the sweet and bitter smell of lemon filled the hallways like students on passing time.

The way that people think about their ability to change and grow can impact their lives. In her book, Mindset: The new psychology of success, Carol Dweck introduces this way of viewing of the world as our mindsets. She proposes that there are two different types of mindsets: growth and fixed. People with a growth mindset see their abilities as something that can be cultivated and changed through effort. They are more willing to take chances to learn and grow.
Students with growth mind-sets like challenges and work hard to get better and improve their skills and knowledge. They also honed in on the skills needed to accept challenges and confront difficulty in order to better solve their problem or problems. If they make a mistake or answer a problem wrong it drives them to want to try harder and figure out and solve the problem they were faced with. This lets them academically surpass their fellow students who have a fixed mind-set because of their hard work and drive to succeed.
Either one has a fixed mindset or a growth mindset. According to Dweck’s, a fixed mindset is when one creates a certain personality, intelligence, and a certain moral character-well. I like how she not only describes a fixed mindset, but how she describes that one needs to prove that having a fixed mindset comes with a healthy dose of personalities. I also believe that a fixed mindset means that either one believes he is good or bad at something. According to Dweck, a fixed mindset is also based on one’s inherent nature, that’s just the way one is. “Believing that your qualities are carved in stone-the fixed mindset-creates an urgency to prove yourself over and over” (86). I remember there was a time in my life where I had a fixed mindset and I was stuck on the idea that I was always wrong because that was the way my mind worked. I was a sophmore in
The overall theme of the sources we studied was about growth mindset. The most important thing about growth mindset is that intelligence can be developed. Also, the brain can grow by hard working and practicing. In “You Can Grow your Intelligence,” the author maintains that contrary to the belief that a person is born either smart, average, or dumb, instead the brain is more like a muscle, it changes and get stronger when you use it. Lastly, Carol Dweck, in a Ted Talk titled “ The Power Of Believing That You Can improve,” narrates how she researches about the growth mindset and the fixed mindset, and the benefit of having a growth mindset. Also, in her video she gave many good advice of how you can change a person that have fixed mindset to a growth mindset.
Dweck’s book gives great insight to the two different forms of mindsets occupied by people. The first mindset he explained was the fixed-mindset. People who think with a fixed mindset believe that they are born with or without abilities and no amount of practice will improve their abilities. This belief causes them to maintain status and repeat the same task levels repeatedly in order to prevent from failing. People with fixed-mindsets see a small failure as a label of who they are. On the opposite end of the spectrum, people with growth mindsets believe that with hard work and dedication any ability may be improved. These people also take small failures as an area in which they can improve rather than a negative label of themselves. This mindset
Many studies about the brain prove that people normally are divided in two types of mindset and these can affect the personal life of people in a negative or positive way. The wirier Lisa Trei in her article, “New study yield instructive results on how mindset affects learning” asserts that the people with a fixed mindset always feel fear of making mistakes and for that reason they do not improve and are not able to change. Also Trei states people with a growth mindset don’t have problems making mistakes, and see this as a new learning opportunity. In the article, “You can Growth your Intelligence” by Lisa Blackwell she gets that the brain is able to growth and get stronger with the phrase “the brain is like a muscle”. The growth mindset is defined by effort and challenges, people that want do more in their life’s and the fixed mindset is equal to excuses and conformist, people that don’t take risks and never change because they feel fear of do any mistake.
People who have a fixed mindset usually want something easy and not challenging; they feel scared to lose while growth mindset people tend to love challenges and making mistakes lives within their body as a trait. The author proves when she said that students with fixed mindset will never showed any interest when they found difficulties in completing those assignment. Only when they did well right away, they will feel the enjoyment. In contrast, the harder it gets, the more urges for the growth mindset to grab the knowledge and feel excited to learn something. Carol Dweck also gives an example in Columbia where she met a lot of intelligent med students who always get A’s in their test. It only took a day to make them a failure, when they said
Mindset to me is something that can always be changed depending on your attitude. I do not believe that mindset is something that is fixed, and that you are only as good as your genes allow. I think you can develop new skills or improve any current skills anytime in life as long as you put in the work. In the letter I wrote to a future student I talked about my first real test in college. It was in BIO 105 and I bombed it. When I saw my score the first thing I thought was that I wasn't cut out for college. I was used to not putting much effort in when I was in high school and still doing good. From a little help from my teacher I was able to change my work ethic when it comes to school work. From that point on I've done much better in school
Success is essential when it comes to a student’s academic career because it helps them graduate even better themselves. Success can impact a student in many different ways and different concepts, such as pushing them to believe in themselves or reading or math or science, can help a student to be successful. The two of which can be “grit” and the concepts of growth and a fixed mindset. Grit is vital to the success of a student because they learn how to persevere in a long term goal. Fixed and growth mindset can impact a student’s success because it either help or hinder them in any subject such as science or physical education.
Do you believe your traits are fixed forever? Or do you think that these can be improved? Lots of research showed that our behaviors and traits are flexible, that means we are able to develop them. It includes everything psychological, from business skills to intelligence, and turning into an introvert and so on – we can develop anything pretty much.
The way we view challenges depends how well we have taken in encouragement or any type of criticism. How well past comments and the way we were raised has helped us developed our mindsets. Fixed mindsets and growth mindsets individuals take challenges differently. Basically, the way both mindsets, fixed and growth work it all depends on how we were raised.
In the past, I have held a fixed mindset perspective. When I was in middle school I would give up on everything that was given to me. For example, I had a project that needed to be done in a month, I put it off, it got to the point where it was due the next day. When the day came for me to turn it in my teacher asked me where the project was and I said, “ My little brother destroyed it,” which was a huge lie on my part. In fact, a fixed mindset, the belief is that intelligence is fixed and static.
1) Last year I took psychology which was when I first began to understand the difference between a fixed and growth mindset. A fixed mindset is when “people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits.” For example, this could either be both positive or negative thoughts. On the other hand, a growth mindset is when “people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point.” Since I was five years old, I have played tennis both recreationally and on the competitive level with the opportunity to play in college. Since tennis is a single person sport, it was hard to always stay positive. When I would tell myself I
Do you believe that your intelligence and skill is something that is predetermined or something you can control? Whichever you believe, you are right. Growth and fixed mindsets are ways of thinking that you subconsciously choose. I believe all people should strive to have a growth mindset, because the opportunities in life are limitless when you have the belief that you can do anything.
From my perspective, the mind always seemed like a complicated and intricate puzzle. It was a puzzle that I had no desire to evaluate or even begin to learn more about. It was something that I had just accepted because I believed it was above my understanding and much too complex. However, I never thought to look at just one small piece of the puzzle. If I could just focus on one little section, maybe I could increase my overall knowledge of the mind. By reading the book, Mindset by Carol S. Dweck, I was given the opportunity to be able to specialize on one very crucial part of our mind. A part that deals with how we view ourselves and others, our communication, and the reasoning behind our actions. This is called our mindset. While reading
