ABSTRACT On September 6th, 2017 period 6 and 8 of research and experimental science went to Miami Zoo to observe the flamingo exhibit. The flamingos were watched for about 40 minutes all together. After gathering the data of the flamingos behavior, the information was processed into two different charts called followed by table and transition frequency table and then turned into a kinematic diagram. The diagram shows the transition frequency of how many times the flamingo that was studied produced a behavior after another behavior.
INTRODUCTION
The bird that was watched to gather the data was the flamingo (phoenicopterus), a type of wading bird. At Miami Zoo they have American flamingos (phoenicopterus ruber) . American flamingos are normally 3 feet and 6 inches. Their wings have bright pink and white feathers and beneath they have a black coloring, and their beaks match the rest of their body being white, pink, and black. Compared to the rest of the flamingos they are the tallest.
When we went to Miami Zoo, we watched the flamingos to collect data on their behavior. Five behavioral patterns were chosen and carefully examined throughout the watch time. A total of 83 behavioral patterns were recorded on flamingo number 25. Everything was then put in several charts to be made into a kinematic diagram. We did this to analyze the behavior of flamingos in a certain time frame.
METHODS
At 11:30, we watched the flamingos to choose the five most common behavioral
Kinesis occurs when the animal moves in a random motion in response to the stimulus. Throughout this lab, we put the pillbugs through four different tests. These experiments are to test to see if these animals will prefer a certain habitat rather than another and how they show this is through either kinesis movement or taxis movement.
This is a summary of the video we saw on the fifth of july’s lecture about John Cleese’s documentary about lemurs. He went on a three week expedition to the forest of Madagascar, to follow five black and white lemurs known as”Carolina five” that were born into captivity and then released into the rainforest. The video discusses the characteristics of several primate species. Lemur behaviors shown include bipedalism, leaping, climbing, playing, sunning, eating, feeding, vocalization, clinging, grooming, and defecation.
Hummingbirds can be characterized by their resilience and their ability of determination. Due to the hummingbirds deceiving size, “The female,
Because it is sudden and apparently, well-coordinated, the movement of flocks and schools has seemed to be directed by a leader.
Jennifer Price, in her essay "The Plastic Pink Flamingo: A Natural History," highlights the American culture's ridiculous obsession with displaying wealth through her use of diction, tone, and simile/metaphor. She depicts American culture as nonsensical, and thus ridiculous, because of its disposal of normal standards or logic in order to fulfill its materialistic desires which is shown through the popularity of the pink plastic flamingo in the 1950s.
This experiment was performed to observe the taxis and kinesis of certain organisms. This is important because the organism’s survival and ability to reproduce depends on how they orient to stimuli using senses. We investigated the behavior of pill bugs to determine if they’ll move towards or away from the vinegar through smell. If I place pill bugs in a behavior tray with different chambers, then they’ll move away from the chambers that contains vinegar. A behavior tray with 5 chambers is used and 2 were control while the other 2 has cotton balls with a few drops of vinegar on it. 5 pill bugs are positioned in the center of the chambers and is covered with a transparent cover to observe the organisms for 10 minutes. Results had shown the class
In the essay “The Plastic Pink Flamingo: A Natural History” by Jennifer price; the author shows implicitly her idea and point of view on the topic on the United States culture. The idea is that the U.S.A‘s culture is very overbearing, this is shown by her view on how Americans are so worried with their image that is seen by society. Price uses many writing techniques to express her view on United States culture, by the usage of diction, tone, and symbolism Price is able to convey her analysis on the greed and the corruption occurring in the American culture.
Jennifer Price’s essay “The Plastic Pink Flamingo: A Natural History” introduces the origins of the famous lawn ornaments. Price’s purpose is to educate about the hypocrisy of American culture and how many live a life of extravagance and fortune without raising a finger. She adopts an informative tone in the first paragraph that shifts to a sarcastic tone in order to exemplify the state of insincerity of the American ways to the citizens of America.
Zootopia is one of Disney’s most successful films in recent years. Its main goal at the time was to use animals as metaphors for humans in order to help kids understand racial tensions in the police and with the public. Disney achieved this, as well as incorporating underlying psychological themes that could be interpreted by audience members both big and small. They were harder to uncover, but some that I noted are how the characters are unique depending on how they were born and raised, the effects of isolation, and how they build relationships. I believe it’s important to look at the behavior of these animals since this film can be used as a tool to help children, and even adults, deal with their own behavior.
Jennifer Price in the essay “The Plastic Pink Flamingo: A Natural History” explains her point of view of the American Culture. Price supports her explanation by providing examples and explaining the history of the American Culture and the flamingos. The author’s purpose is to point out the greed in order to further explain her opinion on the American Culture. Price entertains her audience by mocking the American Culture by using symbolism, ethos, and tone in her essay.
In the 1950’s, the pink flamingo became not just an American lawn ornament that was a fun decoration, but also a status symbol of wealth and pizazz. Jennifer Prices essay, “The Plastic Pink Flamingo: A Natural History”, Price uses tone and diction to provide her opinion on the ignorant and foolish actions of the American in the 1950’s regarding the plastic pink flamingo. Price uses a sarcastic tone throughout the piece to help reveal her opinion on the American Culture. In the title of the essay, Price calls the flamingo “plastic” while also saying “natural”. She is stating that the flamingo is naturally made when it is actually man made out of bright pink plastic.
The author, Jennifer Price used similes, imagery and satire throughout the passage “The Plastic Pink Flamingo:A Natural History”. Each device is used for a particular reason and helps bring the purpose of the passage together. The purpose of this passage is to depict how we as individuals are basically immature with our money and waste our money on things that aren’t as necessary and that we could do without. We have to keep in mind when we are reading her passage, that she grew up in the Great Depression so her stance is different than ours when it comes to money.
On Friday, March 31, a observation study was conducted at the L.A. Zoo. The time of arrival for the observation was at 11:48 am and the end of the observation was at 2:42 pm. The weather condition at the zoo was very sunny with a mild gust of wind every so often, which is a perfect weather condition to conduct a study. The main reason for conducting this observation study was to study and gather information about the many different types of primate that are located at the zoo. To see how different or similar each primate is to one anotherin different aspects.
These methods are used to identify kinematic parameters without discomfort to the animal. Force plates, video/high speed cameras or 3D motion cameras cannot be used as there is no access to this software and technology, however the information that will be acquired in this study will use alternative software and methods that will support evidence obtained.
The behavior of different species of wildlife which are brought into the circus industry also varies, and they therefore require different living conditions. Observing the natural behavior of tigers versus lions illustrates this fact. Unlike tigers, which have a mainly solitary existence, lions are very social, and are really the only big cats which display this characteristic (Whitney). Furthermore, elephants have yet another type of lifestyle, and “form deep family bonds and live in tight matriarchal family groups” (Whitney). By looking at just these few select animals, one can see that they all require different treatment based on their natural predilections. Tigers may be comfortable to exist in solitude with the circus, but a lion would be more accustomed to travelling with his pride, not alone, a sentiment which would be shared my an elephant used to being with a family. Moreover, separate from their preferences for company, both tigers and lions are extremely territorial and are usually in charge
