The sexual awareness group Promoting Awareness, Victim Empowerment (PAVE) has created a petition to revoke Bill Cosby’s Medal of Freedom in light of his newly discovered acknowledgement. It was recently discovered that Cosby, accused of raping 40 women, conceded in a 2005 deposition that he acquired drugs for the purpose of giving them to women with whom he wanted to have sex. PAVE’s goal is to get a formal response from the White House with this petition, and will get one if the petition receives 100,000 signatures. The founder of PAVE has said taking Cosby’s Medal away is “unprecedented,” but states how this is a way to “fight back” against his “sexual violence.” Although the White House has taken a stand against sexual assault in general, the specific topic of Cosby's alleged actions has not been publicly …show more content…

Many people in Congress disapprove of the deal, and are attempting to veto it. Opponents of the deal disagree with the President, who said that war or this deal were the only options to get Iran to cooperate. Obama went on the offense, suggesting that much of the criticism is from partisanism. He argued that monitoring Iran’s nuclear program is the best way to assure the country will abide by the rules. Obama pointed out that nuclear material can’t be hidden and stated that if Iran cheats, they will be
Victims, through news reports and social media, often become celebrities overnight. Victims of crime are instantly thrown into the public eye and are fair game when reporters are rushing the scene for a top news story. The media frenzy creates a chaos that magnifies the victims pain and suffering to acquire viewer’s attention, and the reports are usually more gruesome, violent and more sexually charged than the truth. Sexually violent crimes are often a top news focus, re-victimizing the survivor of the sex crime. Research shows that “84% of prime-time television shows contain at least one episode of sexual harassment, which perhaps accurately reflects the commonplace nature of this violent crime”(Beirne, 2011, pg. 11). When a crime has been committed, victims are at a vulnerable time in their lives, which is when the media takes the opportunity to move in and overwhelm them even further while distorting the facts, asking questions, and snapping pictures looking for a news story. Victims are often even re-victimized as the media picks through their past, nothing is private, all information received, whether through a dependable source or just another citizen, is displayed for all of society to make their judgment. This can lead to society thinking the victim deserved it, it was their fault, or they weren’t a good person. This type of treatment has a greater devastating emotional
There were approximately forty women that have come out about being raped by Bill Cosby. From those forty, there were twenty-nine who said that they had been drugged and forced to commit sexual contact with
Last week, the White House released a short, celebrity packed, 60-second public service announcement (PSA) on the topic of sexual assault. 1 is 2 Many addressed those who are in control of preventing sexual assault as its intended audience was those who can put a stop to sexual violence: the perpetrators or would-be offenders. Although this one minute announcement completed the task of bringing sexual assault to the forefront of discussion, it failed to encompass the central issues concerning the culture of sexual assault: societal misperceptions, the victims, and the justice system. Sexual assault is a phenomenon that has been around for centuries; the culture of sexual assault is rooted in both legal practices and societal perceptions.
Now is the time to use the power of American diplomacy to pressure Iran to stop their illicit nuclear program, support for terrorism, and threats toward Israel. Obama and Biden will offer the Iranian regime a choice. If Iran abandons its nuclear program and support for terrorism, we will offer incentives like membership in the World Trade Organization, economic investments, and a move toward normal diplomatic relations. If Iran continues its troubling behavior, we will step up our economic pressure and political isolation. In carrying out this diplomacy, we will coordinate closely with our allies and proceed with careful preparation. Seeking this kind of comprehensive settlement with Iran is our best way to make
Throughout Shakespeare’s plays, a vital aspect in his writing is similarity to classic Greek tragedy; specifically including a tragic hero, who is identified by a detrimental flaw ingrained in their character, eventually causing their demise. Bill Cosby, a beloved family comedian, prominent figure in American television, and an imperative influence on American’s view of black families, depicts a modern day tragic hero. However, like all tragic heroes, Bill Cosby had a downfall, as Mark Seal states in his article, “The One Accuser who might bring Bill Cosby down for Good,” he allegedly committed over 60 sexual assaults and rapes. Therefore, it is apparent that Bill Cosby portrays a tragic hero because he was an outstanding figure in the civil rights movement. He was beloved; nevertheless, he destroyed his life work, reputation, and family by sexually assaulting young women throughout his life.
There are seven key points in this nuclear deal: Iran has to reduce their centrifuges, reduce their uranium enrichments, they can’t over produce anything nuclear for at least two months, their Fordow Facility has to stop producing uranium for fifteen years, they can keep doing research and development but can only do it with a break of three months, they will have inspection by the U.N., and we have to lift our sanctions that we have on Iran. President Barrack Obama said this deal, “is not built on trust, it is built on verification.” (Cato Institute 1/3) This applies to the quote by Barrack Obama wanting to make history. He wants to ensure the safety on America by declining the top producing nuclear war-heads country in the world, their production of nukes. President Obama will go into the books by already stopping a future nuclear
What makes Cosby’s case a complete let down is how his moral character appears to have only been an acting role that eventually had a final curtain call exposing the alleged inner weakness of his humanity to the world. His disgrace let down an entire generation of people who looked to him as a compass of moral integrity and advocate against injustices. It is my opinion that his silence fueled his downward spiral. After decades of offering moral advice, he had nothing to say when trouble visited his world. Regardless of whether he was innocent or guilty, his PR team should have helped him craft a standard response to use when engaging in interviews. Many people looked up to him and his silence only sent a message of confusion and lack of accountability and responsibility for one’s actions. Cosby’s public image was one of a fatherly role model and it would have never crossed the minds of Americans that he could possibly be a sexual predator (Bailey, 2017). That’s why a brief statement without providing too many details would have been better for the credibility of his public image over brewing suspicions stewed in silence.
I concur with Wickham’s argument; Cosby’s refusal to answer this question is not helping his case. In an attempt to take the moral high ground by refusing to acknowledge these allegations as serious, he is convincing no one of his innocence. Cosby lost even more support after it was discovered in the deposition notes that he admitted getting quaaludes,. But I don’t think that he will admit it on his own. So much resources has gone into dismissing the allegations. But sexual assault is a serious issue. Just answer the question, Mr.

The article, written by David Sanger and Michael Gordon from The New York Times on August 23, highlights main controversies about Iran-US nuclear agreement. After months of negotiations between USA and Iran, the deal is waiting to be approved by Congress. However, there are many points of debate regarding the approval of this pact. The main point of polemic is the capacity of Iran to produce nuclear weapons after 15 years, when the agreement is supposed to end. Many people, like the Democrat Representative Adam B. Schiff from California, agree Iran would “have a highly modern and internationally legitimized enrichment capability” (Gordon & Sanger, 2015). Others argue in favor of the agreement because, as R. Nicholas Burns, undersecretary of
There are different notions that the society has towards both Brock Turner and the victim, but whether good or bad, this case has sparked many new perspectives and conversations about situations such as this. The article proposes that this is only the first step to developing a culture that does not tolerate sexual violence in any form and a judicial system that deals appropriately with cases that involve sexual assault.
The Iran Deal was made by President Obama this past July to stop Iran from building any nuclear weapons. The U.S. has had several controversies with Middle Eastern countries in the past. One of Matthews’ political concepts is to “keep your enemies in front of you.” Although the U.S is trying to improve the relationships between these countries, such as creating an alliance with Israel, the Middle East is still a major concern. By making this agreement with Iran, President Obama has given the U.S. the opportunity to keep an eye on the “enemies.” However, if either nation decides to break any prior promises, we could go to a long and costly war. Using Matthews’ tactic to see the enemy, and a with a drastic alternative for both countries, we can have more confidence that this conflict will not
To make it on the big screen is demanding. To remain a reputable reputation can be even more challenging. Actor, comedian, writer and producer Bill Cosby gained widespread popularity over his lifetime through shows such as “Fat Albert” and “The Cosby Show.” With numerous awards to his credit, Cosby, has been one of the top names in comedy for decades. Although as of late 2015, Cosby’s past predicaments have piled up against him. With rape and sexual assault allegations from over fifty women tarnishing his reputation. With evidence lacking in the majority of these cases many people have blown over this entire situation as false allegations. Despite being a loved comedian amongst the public, Cosby must face the court and be brought up to justice
Bill Cosby was charged with aggravated indecent assault involving “Temple University employee” that happen a decade ago. Andrea Constand the victim said that Cosby gave her quaaludes then sexually assault her. Constand filed a civil suit against cosby and demanding for the lawsuit to be public and Bill Cosby said “yes” to the question. Over “a dozen women claim that they were drugged and molested by the comedian”.
Rape also known as sexual assault is having sexual intercourse or any form of sexual penetration against a person’s will or consent. It could be carried out by coercion, the use of physical power or abuse of authority. It is an act many societies, if not all discourage, and attracts different form of punishment in different geographical locations. There are many consequences of rape; some people suffer from depression, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Suicidal tendencies, and Anxiety Disorder. It was not a surprise when the Mr. Cosby’s alleged case of rapes were waved and flooded to the entire media channels in the USA and other countries. Majority of people can recall number of such cases where some prominent African – Americans were sued
