The Book is about Heroes of two brothers, William and Robert Hatch, and how they interviewed celebrities of international fame as their heroes. They interviewed people such as well known personality's such as Desmond Tutu, Lance Armstrong, and Jimmy Carter. During these interviews the family had personal struggles, both parents have dealt with brain tumors, one operable and one not. They also had their house destroyed by fire and faced the challenges of a child with Down Syndrome. This project developed over twelve years. Both Robert and William Hatch were determined to obtain these very important interviews, and went to great lengths to accomplish their goal of obtaining the interviews. Growing up in Pasadena, California, Jackie was relatively poor. Jackie attended John Muir High School and Pasadena Junior High, where he excelled in four sports: football, basketball, track, and baseball. Jackie continued his schooling at UCLA and in 1941, he was forced to leave due to financial hardship. Jackie then moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, where he played semi-professional football for the Bears. Jackie’s season was cut short when the United States entered into World War II, and he served as a second lieutenant in the army until 1944. In 1944, Jackie refused to give up his seat and move to the back of a segregated bus. As a result, Jackie was arrested and court-martialed. Fortunately, Jackie was acquitted of the charges and received an honorable discharge after public light was shed on the injustice. Jackie’s courage and moral objection to segregation were precursors to the impact Jackie would have in MLB.

Jackie Robinson comes from a humble beginning. Jackie was born January 31, 1919 in Cairo, Georgia. When he was six months old, his father left and his mother moved the family to California. With the help of a niece, his mother bought a house in a white neighborhood in Pasadena. As if raising a family as a single parent isn't enough she had to stand up every day to racism and horrible treatment since she lived in a white community. Jackie was very proud of his mother, she is where Jackie learned to stand up for himself and not be pushed around. As Robinson grew up he discovered he was a natural athlete. Although he still struggled, putting up with racism, he learned that through sports he could make friends with white kids.
