While most people know that Nightingale was influential in the field of nursing, they might not know how much she truly impacted it. Nightingale essentially established the profession. Before she came along, nurses considered their jobs to be unimportant and of low-status, as they were untrained and were not taught properly about nursing, but learned through experience. Although her familial affluence guaranteed her a life of luxury and leisure, Nightingale felt a greater calling to improve society. She refused to succumb to the societal standards of the Victorian era because she found providing care for others was more meaningful and satisfying than the mundane domestic lifestyle. Florence Nightingale was one of the most impactful pioneers of nursing practice, because she modernized hospitals to create a better environment for the patients to heal, educated fellow nurses, reformed statistics in health, and started a social reform within public health.

She was committed to her mission and with that she showed that a nurse should have compassion. This relates to nursing being both an art and a science. She emphasized the need for empathy, as she believed that being empathetic could also help improve with recovery. Nightingale took initiative in the work she did and as a leader you need to take action and be proactive. An important contribution Nightingale made that has impacted our education and also improved the environment was her hadnwashing theory. A discussion in nursing theory must be preceded by a general definition of theory because in order to understand nursing theory one must have a general knowledge of what theory is. When the word theory is looked up in the Merriam-Webster dictionary there are six definitions that are provided:
Florence Nightingale was one of many theorist, she had a concept that the environment of a patient affected the healing process of that patient She performed vast research to support her environmental theory. At the time of the Crimean War, Florence Nightingale pioneered to improve sanitary conditions in military camps. She kept records of death rates and causes of death, which she utilized to eliminate the practice which contributed to the unhealthy environment. She learned that by improving hygiene practices, through clean water and overall environment, mortality rates decreased from 60% and eventually to 2% (Asad, 2014).
