Florida vs. North Carolina Legislature Comparison Paper
I chose these two states to compare because they are the states I have lived in throughout my life and are significant to me. I was born in Wilmington, North Carolina and lived there until I was 10 years old. My step-father received a job offer in Islamorada, Florida and we decided to move. I lived there until I graduated high school, following which I came to Orlando to go to college.
Elections are a major aspect of the State Government, with new representatives of the elections board being elected every four years in North Carolina and eight years in Florida. As far as impact on term limits, there’s not a problem with having no limit on terms in Florida because if the representative is doing a good job then it would be acceptable to have them stay in office. Corruption or abuse of power aren’t nearly as big of issues because the power of State legislatures lacks severely in comparison to federal power, so typically corrupt officials wouldn’t want to stay in the state department. The Florida Department of State’s Division of Elections provides administrative help to the Secretary of State, Florida’s Chief Election Officer, to ensure that Florida has just, prompt, and accurate elections. There is also a Director’s office whose mission is to provide statewide coordination and direction for the interpretation and enforcement of election laws, and to provide supervision to the Bureaus in the Division.
