There are public institutions that want the Ten Commandments displayed. If that is done the penalty for breaking a commandment should also be displayed. The New Testament teaches that the Old Testament should be obeyed. This includes both the Commandments and the results of not following the Commandments.Jesus said in John 10:35"Scripture cannot be broken."This statement was made after he had said in John 5:46-47"For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me; for he wrote of me. But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?"First Commandment, Exodus 20:3"Thou shalt have no other gods before me."The punishment - Deuteronomy 17:3-5"And hath gone and served other gods, and …show more content…
Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it."The punishment - Exodus 31:15"Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death."Fifth Commandment, Exodus 20:12"Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee."The punishment - Exodus 21:15 and 17"And he that smiteth his father, or his mother, shall be surely put to death."More punishment - Exodus 21:17"And he that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death."Sixth Commandment, Exodus 20:13 "Thou shalt not kill."The punishment Leviticus 20:17"And he that killeth any man shall surely be put to death."Some exceptions - Exodus 22:19 "Whosoever lieth
I am contacting your company in response to a recent article published in your magazine. As a man of wealth, I take high offense to the “Workingman’s Ten Commandments” because it portrays jealousy and envy towards us in the upper class. Although I expect my employees to follow my every command wholly and completely, the word “master” makes employees sound like slaveholders. My workers have all the respect and dignity they deserve as immigrants to our fine country. Having laborers utterly loyal to my company is no sin by any man’s standards and should not be mocked like it is in this article. These commandments wrongly praise the unions, which are in place for the sole purpose to tear down the precedents and standards all major companies like
Most of these laws intersect or connect with the commandments of the book of Exodus. For example, in The New Interpreters Study Bible connect with a law written for the Hammurapi’s Laws. “When people who are fighting injure a pregnant woman so that there is a miscarriage, and yet no further harm follows, the one responsible shall be fined what the husband demands, paying as much as the judge determines” whereas in Hammurapi’s Laws he states that, “If an AWILU strikes a woman of the AWILU class and thereby causes her to miscarry her fetus, he shall weigh and deliver ten shekels of silver for her fetus”. These laws refer to the penalty for bodily injury to others including
Picture a king so ahead of his time and so powerful that he was aware of the importance and sense of urgency behind establishing laws to ensure the growth of civilization and humanity. His name was Hammurabi and he was the king of Babylon. He reigned from 1792 B.C. all the way to 1750 B.C. As an innovative and feared king he created 282 laws for everyone to follow, as gruesome as "an eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth" and as political as ranking people from nobles to slaves and everything in between, he started a new era for Central Mesopotamia then, and all of humanity now. (Edgar et al) As unimaginable as it sounds for someone to come up with a simple 282 laws for a just way of living; at a later time in Egypt there was someone else coming up with a more spiritual way of life. The Ten Commandments, although history says that Moses discovered the stone some time in 1400 B.C., 300 years after, it has been said that these commandments were known about since the beginning of time from a Higher Power. Moses was a former Egyptian prince and later became a Prophet. The bible quotes Moses as one of the greatest Prophets of history. Facing Pharaoh Ramses and freeing the Jews from slavery, he was one of the most important religious leaders of all time. These commandments explain a better
It is important to understand what the text meant to the Old Testament audience in order to understand the underlying principles. This pericope focuses on Genesis 2:1-3 (NRSV), which reveals these scriptures as substantive forerunners for the Laws of Moses in that commandments were given to rest (verse 1), observe the Sabbath (verse 2), and observe the 7th day cycle (verse 3).
In Exodus 20, God creates moral order. God’s way of separation and categorization is a model for human morality. Morality divides up actions into right and wrong, good and bad. To be moral is to categorize actions and circumstances appropriately and follow the correct rules in each case. The Ten Commandments serve as a guide for human beings to be moral. In disobeying these laws, God is well known to punish, starting with Adam and Eve. God punishes because punishment is necessary in order to create human beings who can be morally responsible for themselves. To be morally responsible, we must be able to do the following things:
The Ten Commandments are regarded as the fundamental laws that all Christians are to conform to. They were written by the hands of God himself and revealed to Moses on Mount Sinai, inscribed on two stone tablets. They offer basic rules of behaviour for spiritual and moral living to Christians. These laws still instruct Adherents today, for they expose sin and show us God's standard. Without the sacrifice of Christ, Adherents are completely helpless to live up to God's holy standard.
In this covenant, it was agreed that humans would have the freedom of thought and will, but would have to account for their actions to God. As such, the Jews agree to abide by God’s commandments if God agrees not to forsake them, even though they may sometimes be unworthy of his favour. Most of the ethics are contained in the mitzvoth, which are laws based on God’s commandments. The main laws which are the focus in the modern variants of Judaism are the Sabbath law, which prohibits work on the Sabbath Day, and kashrut, Jewish dietary laws in which only kosher (permitted) foods are to be consumed because they have been prepared in the correct
Penalty for disobedience was death. Many Israelites disobeyed God and obeyed Antiochus but many Jews would rather die then break God’s holy covenant.
Martin Luther famously said: “This much is certain: those who know the Ten Commandments perfectly know the entire Scriptures and in all affairs and circumstances are able to counsel, help, comfort, judge, and make decisions in both spiritual and temporal matters” . The Ten Commandments have had a place in the confessions of the church and its catechetical processes very early on in history. The Commandments have been taught in most of the catechisms of the Catholic Church as well as in the Lutheran and Reformed catechisms and numerous other denominations. The Commandments have been a natural law or moral law available to humankind, even if perceived as part of the divine law, has led to a the Commandments being applied to
Compared with the Old Testament, Christian dogmas in the New Testament undergo significant changes. These differences can be well demonstrated by comparing the Ten Commandments as presented in Exodus with Jesus commenting upon them in the Gospel of Matthew. The Ten Commandments, as laid out in Exodus, set most basic rules for every person to follow. They determine the good and the bad, the moral norms. For example, it isn’t morally accepted to kill, to commit adultery.
he Bible says that man is created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). Because of this, man has a certain dignity and was given dominion over the rest of creation (Genesis 1:26). The image of God in man also means that murder is a most horrific crime. “Whoever sheds the blood of man, / by man shall his blood be shed; / for in the image of God / has God made man” (Genesis 9:6). The severity of the punishment underscores the severity of the offense. The Mosaic Law is full of examples of how God expects everyone to be treated humanely. The Ten Commandments contain prohibitions against murder, theft, coveting, adultery, and bearing false testimony. These five laws promote the ethical treatment of our fellow man. Other examples in the Law include
In order for God to be close to his people, he makes covenants with them. He tells Moses“Say to the Israelites,‘You must observe my Sabbaths. This will be a sign between me and you for the generations to come, so you may know that I am the Lord, who makes you holy" (ex 31:13). God is talking to Moses and is reminding him that the Sabbath is like a covenant between the people and Him, the Lord. God explains to his people that "the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns (Exodus 20:10). God does not want anyone to work on the Sabbath for He has made it is a day of rest. It is not just His people that Yahweh cares about, it is all people. The Sabbath represents the 7th day in
In Exodus 20:8-10, God gives the command to the Jews to “remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy”. The penalty for disobeying this law was death (Ex. 31:14). This command was given specifically to the Jews. A law that was broken by them among many that caused them to spend 70 years in captivity. According to the Hebrew/Jewish calendar, Saturday is the Sabbath
The Ten Commandments explains how we should live our lives to return to Heaven. The entire document explains why God is mad at the people and what they should do to be better. 8Once he is done stating what the commandments are to Moses, Moses then goes to declare this to the people and that they should not fear God. The document then goes to say that the people should not make images or statues of gold and silver. The people should make Him, or God, an altar to make peace offerings, but it is to be made of whole stone (Joshua 8: 30, 31). The sacrifices of sheep and oxen are to be the first born and unblemished; natural. On the last verse it is saying that God said he wanted not stairs to the altar, but more of a ramp so that their “nakedness be not discovered”.
Almost a decade ago, after I had spent a year of in a discipleship program, I adopted the mission statement: Make the next right decision, and promptly admit when I’m wrong. To me this statement encompasses everything I know about applying Christian ethics to everyday life. Motivated by love, I seek to act in holiness and justice in every choice I make, including admitting promptly when I choose wrong. To make the best decisions possible I apply a biblical perspective, and ethical evaluation toward sound reasoning in recognition of both the spiritual and natural world.
