No matter what era or culture it is, there has always been food. Food is essential to living. It is no wonder that every generation enjoys food differently. One era put their own twist and style to their food. The food that they made then still affects the people in the world today. In the Renaissance era, food played an important role in distinguishing classes, celebrating traditions, and determining health. When it comes to seeing how wealthy someone was in the Renaissance era, one could easily determine their status by looking at what they ate and how they ate it. No matter what class you were in, most people ate three meals per day. They called their three meals breakfast, dinner, and supper. This is different from the three meals, breakfast, lunch, and dinner that most people eat today. Their portion size and eating times were also different than what might be considered normal today. Breakfast was always a simple, light meal for all classes and was eaten early. Dinner was the most significant and elaborate meal of the day. It was served between 10 A.M. and 1 P.M., and could last 3 hours for the wealthy. In the early seventeenth century the nobility, gentry, and university students usually ate at 11 A.M. while the merchants and peasants ate at 12 P.M. Supper was lighter than dinner but heavier than breakfast. It was the medium sized meal. The upper-class ate supper between 5 P.M. and 6 P.M. while the merchants and peasants ate it between 7 P.M. and 8 P.M., because
