The social problem the Charleston Area Churches Food Pantry, a non-profit organization, deals with the social problem hunger. According to our textbook, Social Problems, a social problem is a condition that undermines the well-being of some or all members of a society and is usually a matter of public controversy. With that being said, world hunger fits the category of a social problem for many different reasons. Being hungry can cause humans to get very sick and have starvation related illnesses. Not only may someone suffer from these illnesses, they could potentially be killed from them. Those who work with the Charleston Area Churches Food Pantry favor the solution of making those in need of food aware of food pantries so starvation related illnesses are less likely to occur. When our social group spoke with the manager of the pantry, he gave us a sheet that has eleven different food pantries listed with their locations that he often gives out to customers because they are unaware of all the help them actually can receive. Although hunger may not be an immediate issue in your life or the peoples lives around you, it does exist in the world and has very real ramifications for each of us. The pantry is ran completely ran by volunteers and receive donations from twenty-two churches either on a weekly or monthly basis. When someone is in need of food they come to the pantry and are given three days worth of emergency food. Boxes are pre-made with numbers up to six on them which represents the number of people that specific box feeds. For example, if a mother of seven comes to the pantry and needs emergency food for her children and herself, she would receive a box with a number six and a box with a number two, feeding eight people
I met with Maria Thompson and Mark Paxton from the Community Food Bank in regard to their site improvements. The Food Bank is requesting CSDC administer a contract with Avila Construction for their site improvements to San Felipe Rd frontage and parking lot improvement that access their building. The contract amount is $57,461.The Food Bank Board has approved the expense and repayment in full to CSDC if we choose to administer the contract. A repayment agreement between the Food Bank and CSDC would need to be drafted prior to approving any contract.

My group and I were asked to work on a project for the Brazos Church Pantry. We had many parts to this project starting with just an over view of the website. For this over view we as a team sat down and looked at the Brazos Church Pantry website and discussed what we found good, bad, what we believe needs improvement, and how the organization can improve it. From this inicial overview of the website we then began to write the first draft of our report to Greg Barfield explaining what we had found in the website, but gave no recommendations yet, because we also explained to him we intended on doing further research to get an outside view through a usability study. Before, the usability study was completed Greg Barfield requested that my team

According to National Geographic Magazine. This particular article is written by Patricia A. Duffy who states that low income families use the food pantry for emergence assistance for food, aside from the traditional government programs; this article suggests that food pantries are heavily used for emergency food (Duffy). The article focuses more on lower income families instead of the homeless. It compares food stamp programs along with the food pantry to understand how they both tie in to one another. There are various statistics and interviews of those who participate in such programs across the nation.
The Field Education Experience I chose Food bank/ Pantry, is a non-profit, charitable organization that distributes food to those who have difficulty purchasing enough food to avoid hunger. Food banks/ pantries are usually faith based operations. However, they can operate on a much larger scale, such as a warehouse (Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, Raleigh, NC.). The warehouse act as a storage that holds large quantities of food for smaller agencies. Some of the smaller agencies are churches, schools, food pantries, homeless shelters, also soup kitchens just to name a few (www.foodbankcenc.org).

Can you live on $4.00 a day for food? Be honest with your answer. That's how much some of us spend on coffee or latte during the day. For more than 380,000 people right here in Wisconsin, it's not a question. It's a reality. In September, designated as Hunger Action Month, we're asking our supporters to experience that reality for one week. Called the Hunger Games Challenge, participants are asked to live as if they are on food stamps, now known as the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
Feeding America started as a clearinghouse for national food donations. Now it's the nation's largest domestic hunger relief organization, a powerful and efficient of 200 food banks across the country. For 35 years Feeding America has responded to America hunger emergencies, and has done a good job at it. The perception of food banks was started by John Van Hengel in the late 60s. Van Hengel born in Waupun, WIi, a retired businessman, was volunteering his time at soup kitchens giving food to people who couldn’t buy food for themselves. One day a poor mom was fishing through the grocery store garbage bins to find food for her family, She suggested that there should be a place where, instead of being thrown out, discarded food could be stored for people to pick up—similar to the way “banks” store money for future use. With that idea is what started the food bank business. ( feedingamerica.org )
Sociology can be seen in the understanding of the structure of the community (research on low-income communities and food deserts), the relationships that Banks fosters with community leaders, and the direct correlation of the social issue of hunger caused by poverty with sociology. Banks mitigates the social stigma of being in need by giving the pantry a market feel. Illustrating the involvement of psychology. Economics, business, and agriculture can be seen through the creation of this mobile pantry. It is presented through the business decision to create a mobile food pantry which provides food to low-income communities, and in turn, help boost these local economies. Additionally, political science and geography can be seen by locating and understanding the politics of these low-income
