Almost twenty percent of Americans are receiving government money(Welfare Statistics)(Population). That statistic may sound bad already but to put that into perspective that means one in every five people are obtaining some form of financial help from the government(Morin). Too many people in our society rely upon government money because most government benefits are better than the ones they would receive from working. Financial aid, including welfare, unemployment, and food stamps, should be harder to apply for and obtain.

A majority of the time the people that are using the food stamps unjustly do not get punished, the stores they shop at do. Food prices may be high, but some people are getting more discounts than they should. Many people obtain food stamps from other people that are eligible for them and use more than they require to get free food. Food stamps were originally made for people that have jobs but cannot meet ends meet with the added load of food for their families. Once put on, recipients should be drug tested every other month. It may cost a lot of money to test so many people so often, but it is more expensive to keep wasting money on people that are not using it for the right reasons. The amount of children people on financial aid have should be limited. Too many children are living in poor households are not receiving everything a child should have for a proper and healthy childhood. This includes proper education, a healthy family, healthy house, and proper meals. Many of the children that grow up in these homes follow in their parents footsteps in believing that the government should pay for them to live. Once children of families receiving financial aid reach the age of sixteen, they should be required to get a job. Even though they are only a kid, that does not mean they cannot help provide a few paychecks to help pay bills. Also, teenagers of these households should not be allowed to become teen parents. The government should also provide services that help people on these programs find a job that they will be able to maintain. If the job is not paying enough for the family to survive on, the government should make up the extra amount instead of paying them the full welfare price. These programs should also check in on these people and make sure that they are going to their job and doing everything correctly. If they quit or are fired for the
