Almost twenty percent of Americans are receiving government money(Welfare Statistics)(Population). That statistic may sound bad already but to put that into perspective that means one in every five people are obtaining some form of financial help from the government(Morin). Too many people in our society rely upon government money because most government benefits are better than the ones they would receive from working. Financial aid, including welfare, unemployment, and food stamps, should be harder to apply for and obtain.
In many states, welfare and unemployment pay more than minimum wage. In fact, there are eleven states in which there is the same amount or more than the amount of people being assisted financially by the government as

A majority of the time the people that are using the food stamps unjustly do not get punished, the stores they shop at do. Food prices may be high, but some people are getting more discounts than they should. Many people obtain food stamps from other people that are eligible for them and use more than they require to get free food. Food stamps were originally made for people that have jobs but cannot meet ends meet with the added load of food for their families. Now food stamps are used by people on welfare with all the newest electronics who do not want to pay for their food so they can save their unearned money for the latest and greatest version of their favorite video …show more content…
Once put on, recipients should be drug tested every other month. It may cost a lot of money to test so many people so often, but it is more expensive to keep wasting money on people that are not using it for the right reasons. The amount of children people on financial aid have should be limited. Too many children are living in poor households are not receiving everything a child should have for a proper and healthy childhood. This includes proper education, a healthy family, healthy house, and proper meals. Many of the children that grow up in these homes follow in their parents footsteps in believing that the government should pay for them to live. Once children of families receiving financial aid reach the age of sixteen, they should be required to get a job. Even though they are only a kid, that does not mean they cannot help provide a few paychecks to help pay bills. Also, teenagers of these households should not be allowed to become teen parents. The government should also provide services that help people on these programs find a job that they will be able to maintain. If the job is not paying enough for the family to survive on, the government should make up the extra amount instead of paying them the full welfare price. These programs should also check in on these people and make sure that they are going to their job and doing everything correctly. If they quit or are fired for the
Hi Alvaro Barajas i completely agree with you that america should not get rid of the food stamps and welfares. If the government decides to get rid of the assistance millions of childrens and elderly citizens will be forced to work. I like how you discussed the points from the articles above. I believe welfares are helping to reduce child poverty all over the states. The parts where churches and private organization isn't able to help government is doing a fantastic job by feeding homeless and children's. In article #5 author provides evidences that government programs like tanf, social security and food stamps are being abused by people. However, I don't believe that everyone who gets these benefits are using them in wrong ways. I believe
The welfare system is designed to support those that are in need. The welfare system should not be abused or misused and failure to comply will be grounds for termination. Drug testing welfare recipients, is it an infringement of rights and should it be mandatory for everyone that receiving or will receive assistance? This subject is up for debate as to whether or not it violates welfare recipient’s constitutional rights. If it should be implemented, would it help saving tax dollars and government spending and stop welfare
Florida’s minimum wage (for example) is insufficient for even a single adult living alone to live off of. 13% of married couples with children under 18 and 42% of single parents have to use food stamps for assistance. Not that having to rely on food stamps is a bad thing, it’s only that those who have to use food stamps are at a disadvantage in the workplace and could use a little bit of help to ensure they can take care of their families. Many people of the community have to rely on welfare and a minimum wage increase would help immensely. Many people of the states have to use welfare -or food stamps- to make sure they are stable financially, which can have an awful feeling on one’s personal self. (‘Living Wages’ Needed).
For those convicted who want a chance to succeed in the outside world, allowing access to food stamps could be the difference between a second chance at life or a second sentence in jail.
In the United States one third of the population receives benefits from the government and although some do need it and use it honestly there is a large majority of welfare users who misuse and abuse it. For example there are people who spend their welfare check on items that are not needed when they go to the grocery store the main use for their check should be to buy healthy and necessary items for their family but instead they like to buy overpriced brand named foods. There are even people who try to use the money given to them to buy alcohol, cigarettes, guns, strip clubs and some even go gamble with it. These kinds of people are the ones who give this program a bad reputation and less chance for those who do actually need it to receive
only conviction, and twelve states have eliminated the ban entirely. Lastly, women are disproportionately affected by such provisions since they are the primary recipient of these welfare benefits. Since the adoption of the welfare reform law of 1996, an estimated of 92,000 women in 23 states, which more than half of them were African American and Latina (Mauer, 2003). Public Assistance such as food stamps is a critical component to support their family, how the state handles the loss of eligibility varies, with some actions being more punitive than others. For example, Texas has a lifetime ban on food stamps for people convicted of a drug felony. The state loses out on federal funds that could be used to help people with drug felony convictions
Johnny gets home from school and makes his way straight to the kitchen. He is hungry and wants a quick, yummy snack, but when he opens up the fridge, there is nothing there. Now he has to wait until his mom brings home dinner at six o'clock. Can you imagine what it would be like to experience this every day? Unbelievable, right? Well, for many children and families, this is their reality. What could possibly cause this, what are the effects, and what are people doing to help these poor families? A large number of children do not have access to fresh and nutritious food, due to lack of supermarkets or living on food stamps. This lack of healthy food can affect childhood development immensely and can lead to obesity and other diseases. Many people are doing what they can to help, like opening community gardens, connecting farms, restaurants, and hotels with food banks, and organizing food drives.
Comparing my menus (on a normal day with the food stamp day), it can clearly be seen that the latter is less nutritious. However, one might argue that the health differences aren't that much due to the unhealthy nature of both menus. On the CalFresh benefit day, I had trouble planning a healthy and satisfying menu because the healthy menus under $6.50 aren't satisfying or the other way round (the satisfying menu aren't healthy). By reason of being a college student, I went for the latter, satisfying but unhealthy menu.
We, as part of the governing body of this nation should regulate the kind of food that each individual is buying, through the Food Stamp program. Luxuries shouldn’t be able to be bought through Food Stamps, only the necessary and essential items.
Food stamps have helped a lot of people out and I have no doubt about that in my mind. Many families depend on
This welfare reform has caused many problems. Since the passage of this welfare reform forty million americans are in poverty and about 20 million are in deep poverty. The United States now has the highest child poverty rates in the developed world. In extreme cases a person might be living on two dollars a day with no access to health care, sanitation, education, or shelter. (Nadasen)
Government Assistance is a wonderful program that has been helping many Americans from living on the streets. This can could be a great idea. However, in practice this is not the case. There are plenty of people on government assistance that abuse the system for non necessities. Whether it may be for “toys” or something more extreme such as drugs or alcohol, these people should not be given financial aid if they are just going to waste it. Not only are they hurting the program, but they are also hurting the taxpayers that fund the program. Because of this, there is a largely believed notion that all people on government assistance as too lazy to get a job. Although I understand where these assumptions are coming from, it would be unreasonable to believe everyone on assistance are just lazy. Coming from a family on government assistance, I can confidently say that this is not the case.
There are lots of things the government helps citizens in the United States of America with, some programs consist of helping with food, money, and housing. These programs are known as supplemental nutrition assistance, temporary assistance, section 8, and even Medicaid. This great program helps needy families and individuals who need a little assistance with their living expenses. Some people think that these programs are hand outs from the government, but most people don’t think that simply because families come in many different sizes and lots of people are not able to work like most people are. Welfare programs provide food to families who really need the help from the government.
Thomas Paine believed that “the poor are not oppressed, and the rich are not privileged” (Paine 1), and today in America, this is one of the bigger problems that we have. The government that we have in place today is made up of almost completely rich white old men, who are probably more interested in making sure that they can keep all their money than they are about dealing with the poverty rates. A common belief among the wealthier classes is that they are paying for food stamps which are given to the poor who are too lazy to work for their own money, and they get mad about this because they believe being poor is a person’s fault. There are some people who live off of food stamps and purposely use them as a reason not to work or try and make their own money, but most of the people
In life things do not always go as planned, we run into some rough patches. For example, one can suddenly get fired from their job but that does not stop the bills from rolling in especially when there is a family to take care of, in situations like this financial help can really be useful. Welfare programs like the “ temporary assistance for needy families” purpose is give money to a group of parents and dependent children living together in a household. Another way that the government has been helping is by offering food stamps, food stamps provide a monthly wage to help keep the family in need feed. Unfortunately many will be cut off from food stamp in 2016 because the waivers have expired, as many as a million people will no longer receive it. There are those that believe government assistance is making a mistake with these welfare programs. After doing some research, their reason for feeling this way is because they think that it is making people in these programs more dependent saying “they will no longer wish to work because they won 't receive the profits gained from the governments help anymore.” Even though there are some that take advantage of the help they receive, helping the less fortunate is priority number one. Most forms of government welfare should not be abolished because it offers assistance for those in need.
