Food is any substance consumed to provide nutritional support for the body. It is usually from plant or animal origin, and contains essential nutrients, such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, or minerals. The substance is ingested by an organism and assimilated by the organism's cells to provide energy, maintain life, or stimulate growth. Historically, people secured food through two methods: hunting, and gathering of agriculture. Today, the majority of the food energy required by the ever increasing population of the world is supplied by the food industry. There are seven classes of nutrients such as: carbohydrate, proteins, minerals, vitamins, water, roughages(fibers) and fat. Carbohydrate: are human and animals main source of energy. Proteins: essential for growth, repair of muscles and other body tissues. minerals: Michael Demetrius defined minerals as “an inorganic compound that aid in energy production and body maintenance as well as assisting in the control of body reactions.” Vitamins: refers to water and fat soluble vitamins which plays a significant role in many chemicals processes in the body. Water: essential for normal body function, water plays a vital role in digestion. The human body holds 60% of water. Roughages(fibers): the fibrous indigestible portion of our diet essential to health of the digestive system. Fat: one source of energy and important in relation to fat soluble vitamins.
