Football workouts! Choir practice! and band practices are a lot to handle for a student athlete. It is 6am football training starts in 45minutes. As Latrell Arrington gets out off bed he stops for a moment say a prayer, and gets ready for his long day ahead. He knew the day would consist of him running from place to place, but he is prepared. His motto “Nothing comes to sleeper but a dream.” Throughout his collegiate experience he juggled multiple activities without a complaint in sight. “As hard as it may have seen, being a part of all three organizations was somewhat of an easy task. While the band and choir director understood that football was the most time consuming, they were able to work some type of plan out for me that allowed …show more content…
The adaption was one that was not hard because I was used to it; I did it high school. Honestly a college life that would’ve been easy would’ve been a life I didn’t want.
As far as all three going on at the same time, I found it easy to manage. I knew I had football every day at a certain time, choir on a certain two days before football, and band on the other two days. Time management was key.
Being a student-athlete requires a lot from practicing long hours to maintaining grades to keep scholarships. The hard work, which it takes to be a student- athlete, is second to none.
The mere fact juggling one sport takes a toll, and one can only imagine balancing multiple sports would be harder. There are only 12 hours in a day, and sometimes task that need to done become undone. In Arrington case with all the extracurricular activities going on something was going to fall by the waste side, and it was his grades.
Honestly my grades took a hit once I started playing football. During the transition of me getting back into football I became more lackadaisical to my school, and what was important. I remember after that semester was done I rejoiced because I didn’t have to deal that transition again. At the beginning I actually dropped a class putting me at the minimum 12 hours. Truth be told, I almost FA in a class during this time as well. It was a hard time and it didn’t stop there
I never again throughout the rest
student-athlete is a lot of work because, for football they have to wake up every morning to do
You had multiple things to looks forward to football games, competition, bonding, and meeting everyone else in your instrument section. But you also had multiple things to worry about messing up, band camp, long practices, and being a picked on incoming freshman. You were so new to everything that when you messed up they let you slack off some because you were new to the band. Freshman year flew by and was a blast without any worries. We placed topped three in every competition, always got the highest scores possible, and during practices we tried our hardest. We pushed ourselves to limit while still being possible to have fun. Football games were
The way that all this is available is because of the term coined by the NCAA for the players to be called Student-Athlete. A Student Athlete is a participant in an organized competitive sport sponsored by the educational institution in which he or she is enrolled. Student athletes must typically balance the roles of being a full-time student and a full-time athlete. To be a Student athlete a
The NCAA believes “that a student-athlete is a student first and athlete second.” Student-athletes benefit more than from playing a sport that they love. The graduation rate is higher among the student athletes than the general student body. “NCAA studies show that student-athletes enjoy high levels of engagement in academics, athletics and community: have positive feeling about their overall athletics and academic experiences: attribute invaluable life skills to being a student-athlete: and are more likely to earn similar or higher wages after college than non-student athletes.”
Although college athletes take on active schedules, this does not set them apart from many other students. A hand full of
Athletes are giving it there all both on the field and in the classroom. College athletes are brought to the school on scholarships to play sports. These athletes are giving it there all going back and forth from classes, to the weight room, to studying, and to practices. But they mostly spend a lot of time practicing rather than going to classes. ““These young men are laboring under very strict and arduous conditions, so they really are laborers in terms of the physical demands on them while there also trying to go to school and being required to go to school.” Says Robert McCormick (2011, Kenneth J. Cooper). What Robert means is that these students have a huge amount of work load on them while also being required to go to school at the same time. These athletes aren’t like every other students. Even before the school year starts, athletes have to come to schools weeks early. Having a summer off is what normal college students have
Sports and academics should be held to the same standard. Schools expect top notch performance on and off the field. In the Los Angeles magazine it states, “Berkeley graduation rate for its student-athletes has been as much as 11 points higher than the average for all Division 1 schools… the school cuts it’s top athlete no slack, but provides ample academics support for those who need it”(Cohen paragraph 13 & 27). Schools are expecting 100% from their athletes in academics and sports so they give their athletes no wiggle room and give them the academic help they need. That being said they need to work hard.
Many athletes spend lots of hours dedicated to their sport of choice. They do this by practicing in their free time, team practice, team meetings, and traveling. Then, they have to study for their classes. This to me is like working a full time job with a heavy load ofn classes you have to attend to and do well. Dave Anderson stated, “College athletes spend an average of 43.3 hours per week dedicated to their sport” (Anderson 1). Also, Anderson stated, “This means that college athletes have to work 90 hours per week just to remain in school on their scholarship. This is the equivalent to working two full time jobs with a side job on the weekends just to pay their bills” (Anderson 2). Sports can put a lot of stress on a student’s school work achievement goals. People should know that college for student athletes demands a lot out of them and basically drains them physically as well as mentally. This is based on all the time they spend on sports and
It started at the very beginning of August, before school started, and consisted of long practices that started with a vigorous workout before the sun had risen and ended in the afternoon with a music workshop with some of the best clinicians in the Houston area. Band means to come together as one so and that’s exactly what we did. For 8 hours a week for 3 months a year, about 200 people came together to draw out one 8 minute show of lines and squiggles accompanied by the brassy sounds of orchestral, marching, and jazz music. What many people don’t realize is marching band requires a lot of fitness and mental willpower to get through the long, hot practices that aren’t always the most enjoyable. Many times you just had to be patient and stand in one spot for 20 minutes while Risinger, our marching band director, fixed one specific part of the picture we’d sprawled out onto the football field. We took our shows to many different contests throughout my 4 years in marching band and every time we would walk off the field under the bright lights of the stadium, hearing the roar of applause, breathing heavy and dripping in sweat I knew what we’d just performed was something to be proud
vaccines will reduce grey squirrel numbers without causing the same stress as capture traps. This therefore is a more humane method of reducing grey squirrel numbers. It will work by having the vaccine inserted into the grey squirrels food. This would be a long term control measure as it would impact the ability to reproduce, decreasing the number of grey squirrels as the years go on.The vaccine would sterilise both male and female species as it will cause an antibody affect causing the immune system to target the sperm. this will lead to considrable falls in the number of grey squirrels being produced. with figures suggesting that it would only require 80% of squirrels to be vaccinated in order for the population to fall dramatically.
Every student-athlete around the country attempts to find a good balance between their sport, and their schoolwork. While playing hockey in the winter, and baseball in the spring, I regularly find myself wondering about how to get my homework done after getting out of practice at 9 pm. Finding the equilibrium amongst sports and school is the leading factor in my success in the classroom, as well as on the field or the ice. Working hard in sports and school simultaneously is something that takes limitless dedication and focus, two characteristics that are essential for success in high school, as well as in college. Once I was able to
As a student athlete I experience firsthand what it’s like to balance school and sport and though it is hard work, I wouldn’t be doing it if I didn’t love it. I’ve talked a lot about the disadvantages of being a student athlete, but there are a great deal of advantages as well.
In America, sports have an immense impact not only on our culture but, also on our education system. As adolescents begin to engage in school sports they are exposed to the multiple privileges that are associated with being a student athlete. Teachers become more lineate by giving them special accommodations, like a deadline extension or an omission from an assignment because they have a big championship or tournament. As a result of the special treatment throughout their educational careers, many student athletes develop the mentality that they do not have to try as hard academically as their peers. They believe that they can depend solely on their athletic talents to get them into college. Fortunately, for student athletes this is true, because,
The term student athlete proposes that a man or woman who participates in sports as an extracurricular activity is still required to perform in the classroom. They are students first and athletes second. Yet the actions portrayed send a different message.
Over the course of four years in high school, I have realized that I want to make an impact and change the world. Not just something to benefit myself, but to benefit others.
