For my final paper I will be focusing on the political refugee of Albanians. In 1992 my family and I came to the United States seeking political asylum from Albania. I want to start the paper off by defining what a political refugee is. A political refugee is any person who is unwilling or unable to stay in the country of their nationality due to political oppression. A certain number of reliable foreign nationals are granted political refugee immigration status every year. Applications for refugee status are generally made directly to the United Nations High Commission on Refugees. My mother told me a story of a well known pianist in Albania. He was actually a homosexual but had gotten married as a cover up. My mother knew his wife. Even his wife was not aware that he was gay. Somebody had let it slip that this pianist was gay and word got out the the government. He was given a public trial and he plead guilty and had to serve 10 years in jail.
The border of Albania was surrounded by barbed wire and had soldiers all around it. Up until 1990 when Enver Hoja was ruling it was very difficult to escape as a political refugee. Your only options were to go through the mountains, which connected either to Greece or to Yugoslavia. There was a catch though. There was no way your whole family could escape together. The security was too tight. But sometimes one or two people could sneak through the mountains going unnoticed. The family left behind would face consequences though. My mother’s uncle escaped the country 1958, and soon after the whole family was sent to a village for five years as a punishment. You were forced to work on a farm, with barely any food or water. My mother was five years old when this happened and her sister was 3 years old. They were also forbidden to go to college or work for any government jobs.
After 1990 things began to change. The new president, Ramisz Alia, took over when the people of Albania were starting to revolt. After living in a dictatorship for many years tensions were growing. Civil wars were starting
