Forensic Science Technician

As human overpopulation increases, there will be a lack of resources and basic necessities that will become scarcer elevating crime rates. The broad field of forensics has numerous jobs that specialize in a specific duty. It provides and analyzes evidence in laboratories or offices that helps both state and local police departments solve crimes. As technology advances it also aids in the advancement of forensics. Forensic Science Technicians are required to have a variety of distinctive skills to assist in criminal investigations.

Well I want to become a TBI forensic technician to help bring precision in evidence and tranquility to the public. I want to make sure that with the evidence I collect and process for the state is nonbias. I know evidence collections are one of the most vital aspects in building a strong criminal case against a defendant. Being able to work for one of three state labs, would be an honor. From an early age, I knew I wanted to be part of the criminal justice system. One of the main reasons I chose that field of career was because due to the mistrust in law enforcement. While attending college at the University of Tennessee at Martin, I was offered a great opportunity to become one of the graduating class of the renowned National Forensic Academy

Forensic Science is the process of finding evidence or material connected to the crime. When a crime is committed, police officers take over and secure the scene so if needed, special investigators can search the area to collect and transport evidence to the crime lab. In addition, forensic scientists work in laboratories, courtrooms, etc. But forensic scientists do not carry a weapon or have the authority to arrest someone, even if proven guilty. The role of a Forensic technician varies in many different directions and the process for each evidence material is a huge part in the criminal justice system. What Forensic Technicians do is the base and a huge impact on everyone else’s job, including the investigator and the labs. Forensic technicians analyze, collect data and preserve the evidence found at the scene, whether its bloods, hair, clothing etc. Forensic science technicians help investigators untangle the circumstances surrounding a crime, accident or other unexplained incident. A forensic technician is a person trained to examine evidence and report his/her findings to the proper authorities. The type of technology used by a forensic technician will vary depending upon the type of evidence he/she must process. Such technology includes, but is not limited to 3D facial reconstruction, magnetic fingerprinting, and high-speed ballistics photography (Becker, 2013). The types of evidence to be processed can range from distorted digital images, to comparing DNA samples, to determining bullet trajectories (Young & Ortmeier, 2011). Popular television shows, such as NCIS and CSI, have glorified the forensic sciences, while offering viewers a glimpse into the world of forensics.

Through myriad lectures, I am finding that I learn best kinesthetically. Hands-on activities provide kinesthetic learners with a deeper understanding of material that they do not receive with lectures alone. Simply reading a textbook or following a power-point is great for note-taking, but I have found that notes are not enough for me. By actually doing, I benefit from practice, and the content is better stored in memory. Even with simple flashcards for memorizing vocabulary or historical dates, I will excel further than by skimming over a sheet of paper or by listening to the information repeatedly read aloud. Forensics has to do with crimes and usually trying to investigate or find out what happened or who is responsible for the crime. Seeing that in our day and age there is a lot of violence and killings, this career path is a wise decision. Since it is very common to hear about a shooting or something closely related to that, the family is most likely going to want to know what happened, so then an investigation will arise. People are going to gather up the evidence and figure out who is the guilty one. There are many careers in forensic science today like a crime scene investigator or a DNA analyst but I’m mainly going to focus on autopsy technicians.

Growing up I would see police cars drive pass my house almost every single day. Seeing the police officers in action sparked my interest in criminal justice, especially the Forensic Science aspect. I remember the day I began to do research into the field I Immediately fell in love with everything they did. From collecting evidence left at crime scenes to performing scientific analysis in laboratories. Ever since that day my goal has been to become a Forensic Science Technician. When I got to high school I applied for a criminal justice tech program that would allow me to learn more about the field. That class soon became my favorite I loved everything about it. A forensic science technician is someone who investigates crimes by analyzing and collecting physical evidence. Most technicians specialize in either crime scene investigation or laboratory analysis, which are forensic scientist.

The main job of a forensic investigator, or a crime scene investigator, is to go out to death scenes to collect evidence. They also conduct interviews, study crime scenes, and then analyze the evidence back at the crime lab. Forensic investigators must work with high-technology equipment and forensic scientists in order to solve cases. Forensic investigators must have a true passion for their jobs because they can encounter some pretty gruesome crimes while on the job. It can be hard for some people to live with seeing these things everyday, so they must have a lot of fortitude.

The career field of forensics is a very diverse and broad field to get into too. Studying criminal justice doesn’t mean one is going to be a police officer, criminal justice can branch into many other specialized jobs. In my case, I would like to minor in criminal justice, then branch off and get a bachelors degree in psychology and become a forensic psychologist. I would like to work with the behavioral analysis unit and work with the FBI.

Forensic technicians examine the clues, and tell higher authority what they found (Career Cruising) This relates to the task of a investigator because this gives us an idea on what you have to complete as a Forensic investigator. To conclude people have to be focused to analyze clues. Being a forensic investigator there's a chance of not having a balanced schedule, can have all different shifts and different days you work. Career Cruising claims “ Crime scene investigators may work staggered day, evening, or night shift and may have to work overtime because they must always be available to collect or analyze evidence.” Having the occupation of a crime scene investigator may be hard at sometimes, with all the shifts and jobs you have to do but it will be worth it in the end. There are many other similar occupations, if chosen to be a crime scene investigator and began to dislike it there is other jobs that can relate. Some

In general, a forensic scientist’s job provides an objective, scientific analysis to discover the truth and use that truth in legal proceedings. Forensic scientists take items of evidence collected from crime scenes and determine their relevance to the case by examining and analyzing the evidence. There are various types of forensic scientists that specialize in specific examinations and analysis of different types of evidence. Eventually forensic scientists will testify in court and give their expert opinion on the item evidence that was analyzed by them. Personally, I have always been fascinated with forensic science because of the challenge of finding evidence and having to use that evidence to find the truth of what occurred at a crime scene.

A forensic scientist can be classified as an individual with specialized training and education in the fields of chemistry and biology that can apply this knowledge by the processes of recognizing, identifying, and collecting evidence. There are specialized areas that a forensic scientist can do like trace evidence. These individuals will conduct test in the lab on any recovered evidence, prepare written reports from their findings and testify in court as an expert witness.
