Good Essays

Edgar Allan Poe was a writer and poet who is still known to this day for his stories. He had a very dark and depressing life due to experiencing poverty and tragedies. Along with his experiences, Poe incorporated many literary elements to help set the mood of stories like The Cask of Amontillado and The Fall of The House of Usher. --look at previous essays that you handed in Foreshadowing is a hint or clue of what is going to happen next in a story. Poe used foreshadowing in both the Fall of the House of Usher and The Cask of Amontillado. In The Fall of the House of Usher, Usher’s friend states, “But although the stones were each crumbling with age, no part of the building had fallen yet”(Poe 88). This is foreshadowing because by the end of the story, the house did fall down. The CITADEL of the Usher family was LAGGARD in falling, but would soon become RUBBLE. This translates to “no one injures me with impunity”. The coat of arms means that nobody can injure the Montresors and get away with it. This is foreshadowing because Fortunato had done many wrongs to Montresor, he wasn’t going to get away with it. Montresor eventually killed Fortunato because of all the bad things he had done to him. Foreshadowing in these two stories made the mood darker because most of the foreshadowing was about dark and scary events…….... Something that is very ironic is the fact that Fortunato’s name translates to “fortunate” in Italian. This is ironic because Fortunato was very unfortunate and ended up getting suffocated to death by Montresor. Another example of irony is on page 70 when Fortunato says, “I
